Just downloaded the image and tried it out on my 12 Pro Max. Looks different.
This so much. Putting a Swiss cheese hole in the screen is just a terrible idea. If they’re going to make that area a hole they might as well kill the screen above it. It’s just a cheesy way to make it look like the notch is smaller.I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. This design also make the camera hole much more visible to the eye than the notch.

Let's hope they keep the approach of the notch getting smaller and smaller & move the bar above the notch line:

You need to include the /s tag. People are taking your comment seriously.Thumb? Hope you got forefingers and use them properly; nobody touches side buttons with thumbs.
You cannot do that! It’s the opposite of good design. Let the objects breathe! Have space around them. The only way it would work is that if the display has smaller corners radius. All Androids phones do this an it annoys my eyes.I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. Indeed. This is some amazing use of the eyedropper and bucket tool.those mockups are getting scarily real...
I’m the opposite FaceID recognises me 99% of the time even with a mask whereas the Touch ID on my iPads will recognise me ~10% and I have to rescan my fingers most weeks especially in the winter when fingers get dry and cracked due to my job or chores around the house! Is it? It's better in some ways, and worse in others. Touch ID would always recognize me, even at weird angles and distances.
It’s crazy, every single mockup with Android-like round hole have looked pretty bad to me, to the point that I would prefer the notch… something just seems off, very non-Apple. Some dude says “pill shaped”, and all of a sudden all the renders look very much like an actual iPhone… Even the Galaxy S10, which does have a pill-shaped hole screams "Android", because it is not centered. This render is the first hole-in-the-screen design I have seen that I actually like.those mockups are getting scarily real...
All these pointless changes are a nightmare for website and app designers who have to deliver content that works on all phones.

Sure - there is a 'safe area', but websites and apps have to work on all devices, so ultimately most extra screen real estate is lost.Apple has provided guidance for websites from basically day one. There is nothing further to do since, and that was four and a half years ago.

This comment comes up quite a bit.
Where do you think you hear the majority of this ‘Notch hate’? (Yup, you guessed it…) It’s only on sites like this. Do you really think people outside Macrumors discuss how much they have distain for the notch in the general public? No. Consumers generally don’t care. Most people have more important things to discuss, versus a trivial iPhone feature.
I think that solves the notch problem, but the reality is I never wake my phone with the power button, always with screen tap and swipe up which can't be done without FaceID.I still don't know why Apple don't just throw away FaceID and pop the fingerprint scanner in the power button just like on their iPads.
I like the notch – it gives iPhone a distinctive look (and looks clean in the diagrams Apple produce for in-box leaflets, and in Help).
But the proposed 'pill' shape retains an element of this distinctiveness, and looks far better than a hole IMHO.
This is not a design. This is wishful thinking.
