Aesthetically I prefer the pill cutout separate from the top bezel as opposed to the "micro notch" even though it does result in wasted pixels, but that's all a matter of personal taste. Having owned a Galaxy S10 which had a pill cutout located at the top right I can say that just like the notch your brain eventually tunes it out and you don't really notice it.

I wish they'd implemented this for the M1 MacBook Pros seeing as there's no FaceID or Center Stage included, just a standard webcam.

I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. This design also make the camera hole much more visible to the eye than the notch.

Let's hope they keep the approach of the notch getting smaller and smaller & move the bar above the notch line:

This so much. Putting a Swiss cheese hole in the screen is just a terrible idea. If they’re going to make that area a hole they might as well kill the screen above it. It’s just a cheesy way to make it look like the notch is smaller.

I don’t think Apple will do this because this looks like some terrible android phone implementation

You cannot do that! It’s the opposite of good design. Let the objects breathe! Have space around them. The only way it would work is that if the display has smaller corners radius. All Androids phones do this an it annoys my eyes.

Is it? It's better in some ways, and worse in others. Touch ID would always recognize me, even at weird angles and distances.
I’m the opposite FaceID recognises me 99% of the time even with a mask whereas the Touch ID on my iPads will recognise me ~10% and I have to rescan my fingers most weeks especially in the winter when fingers get dry and cracked due to my job or chores around the house!

those mockups are getting scarily real...
It’s crazy, every single mockup with Android-like round hole have looked pretty bad to me, to the point that I would prefer the notch… something just seems off, very non-Apple. Some dude says “pill shaped”, and all of a sudden all the renders look very much like an actual iPhone… Even the Galaxy S10, which does have a pill-shaped hole screams "Android", because it is not centered. This render is the first hole-in-the-screen design I have seen that I actually like.

I'm assuming Huawei has a phone with a centered pill-shaped hole launching January 2023...

Prefer the notch. If I can get a battery indicator and a VPN icon then I could live with the hole, but otherwise not bothered. Intending to keep the 12 Pro for several years anyway, so hopefully it won't affect me for a while.

At this point, I’m just digging the notch-less design.

Yes, there are scenarios where Touch ID worked poorly for me (cold and wet weather, say). I was merely disagreeing with "Face ID is better on every way".

Maybe it is overall better, but I wouldn't agree with "in every way". (One obvious way it is worse: face masks.)

That's fine, but honestly doesn't provide any different functionality from the current "notch" design. It's not like those 3mm above the pill will be very useful.

Not that I'm against a design like this, mind you, just that I don't think it'll really be as much of a selling point as people think. The anti-notch people will just become anti-pill people.

Sure - there is a 'safe area', but websites and apps have to work on all devices, so ultimately most extra screen real estate is lost.

I'm not sure what you want Apple to do there. They could make the screen smaller to avoid rounded corners and the notch, but that wouldn't gain any real estate either.

What about having the camera pop out from the top like a Wolverine claw? Camera / FaceID would be available when popped out and go back in the device when not used. I think this pill cutout is worst than the notch.

This comment comes up quite a bit.

Where do you think you hear the majority of this ‘Notch hate’? (Yup, you guessed it…) It’s only on sites like this. Do you really think people outside Macrumors discuss how much they have distain for the notch in the general public? No. Consumers generally don’t care. Most people have more important things to discuss, versus a trivial iPhone feature.

They never cared about having ‘thick bezels’ either on previous iPhone generations or MacBooks.

Not once have I ever heard anyone in public complain about or even utter the word ‘bezel’, but hey a lot of you on here do complain about those as if they are the worst thing ever and whined about them until you got your ‘bezel-less’ notched displays.

I still don't know why Apple don't just throw away FaceID and pop the fingerprint scanner in the power button just like on their iPads.
I think that solves the notch problem, but the reality is I never wake my phone with the power button, always with screen tap and swipe up which can't be done without FaceID.

Having the TouchID on the power button would mean always needing to adjust grip and shift your thumb up on the case, then back to the screen which would get so annoying. I feel the same way every-time I have to change my grip to double tap the power for ApplePay.

Getting a slimmer FaceID component in the bezel is the best option IMO, assuming the tech can get there.

I like the notch – it gives iPhone a distinctive look (and looks clean in the diagrams Apple produce for in-box leaflets, and in Help).

But the proposed 'pill' shape retains an element of this distinctiveness, and looks far better than a hole IMHO.

Yes that pill shape looks far better than a smaller hole punch featured on every cheap android that actually takes up less space. Seriously? Just for the sake of having a ‘distinct’ look? ?‍♂️

No offense but some of you are completely brainwashed by Apple’s branding and marketing, so much so that having a wider hole on a phone is somehow better than a smaller one.

I know I've bitched about the notch for years, but I would far rather a notch that size than a hole in the screen. Just move that "pill" up to the top edge of the screen and leave it at that, if you absolutely HAVE to invade our screen space. My god, the designers at Apple really don't have it. Still waiting for an improved Magic Mouse design that you don't lose the ability to use while its charging (or get crippling arthritis from using in general).

I would be surprised if Apple gets rid of the notch. I just don’t see them changing their design until the Face ID array and camera can be hidden behind the screen.
