Moan moan moan... no one will ever be happy... all these dudes moaning about glossy screen, simple... go buy a different brand if Apple doesn't offer the matte version. They're not going to offer the matte version if only a few want it, at the end of the day, they're a company who wants to make profit otherwise its useless.

Alternative options includes buying other branded laptops or perhaps invest in a Hackintosh if you love OSX so much...

and those moaning about chicklet keyboards... oh please, its not the end of the world...

My MacBook and iMac both have them and I haven't had ANY problems with glare.
The problem most people have with glossy isn't even glare, it's that the colors look far too hot, they're completely unreal while matte has much more realistic colors. Thefore when working in graphic arts glossy displays are detrimental, they make the design look far brighter than it really is.

Mostly, glossy displays are a marketting gimmick: the screens of the laptops on stands in store look much better.
Will the MBPs have GeForce was one of your questions. Answer, it depends. If the card is a 9400M, the answer is no. If, as someone else noted, it is the 9300M, then the answer is yes. See this for details as to which cards can use GeForce or not:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybridsli_notebook.html
Except this page hasn't been updated to take in account the MCP79 since the MCP79 hasn't been released yet. So it's only talking of a MCP whose IGP power is ~9100M, while the MCP79 is rumored to reach ~9300M to 9400M performance levels, which might bump the GFBoost availability to 9600M levels (I highly doubt it though, but it's a possibility)

This update sounds very messy, not like something Apple would do. Not updating the whole line at once?

And what's up with that thick black bezel on the MacBook Pro?

The original MBP was not updated at once, (the 17 inch followed later), and in 2003 they introduced 12 and 17" Powerbooks with a new design, and the 15" was updated later.

So it is fairly typical when there are design changes rather than spec bumps.

Maybe because Apple has included anti-reflection coating on them.

really? doesn't appear too apparant to me looking at this:

Quick question, this update that is going to be announced today, will it include the update CPUs? I don't meant just a speed bump of the same processor family, but wasn't there suppose to be a new CPU that is set to be released some time this winter? I apologize, I've been out of the loop as of late.

"Go and buy another brand"

You really don't understand the business model of pro people do you?

So question....

will the new mbp's be worth the 400 more than the refurbished current (not for long) ones?

Is the 9600gt THAT much better?

What? That guy is nuts. The "dumbest idea ever"? Wow, apparently he is 5 years old and hasn't seen the ridiculous ideas coming out of our current 2 party political system.....

That guy clearly overreacted, sure. I'm quite sure he did it for fun though, to make a point. Does not make him 5 yo imo.

I still agree with him too (the general idea I mean): shiny displays are imho an incredibly stupid idea. I still can't see why on earth these things ever made it into the PC industry. More vibrant colors ? More fake you mean ;)

Again, I'll have to wait and see what it gives in real life.

90% (or more) of the users are not PROs...so basically its a wise choice making it glossy.I like glossy too and never had problem with it..BUT im not a pro in colors pantones and stuff like that...:)

Another consumer who just doesn't get that this is not about simply chosing another brand.
Yes, as a lowest common denominator consumer it really doesn't matter, but most "pros" have purchased apps with mac-licenses and if they're someplace "biggish" people will have to be retrained. It's not as easy as simply purchasing another brand. No, it's a full-fledged migration.

Nope, latest chips are the 45nm Penryn, part of the Montevina intel platform, and I'm pretty sure they're already available in macbooks right now (at least in MBPs), next update should be Clarksfield around Q3 2009

What people want

I think Steve Jobs should employ a group of people to look at sites like MR to see what people actually want. How do apple find out what people want? They don't do questionaires do they? I know apple have been ahead of the game for a long time and have given us stuff we never even thought about but now can't live without. But if they plan to get rid of matted screens there will be alot of dissapointed people including me. I have faith in Steve but i hope are don't eat my own words. Imagine only glossy MacBooks Pros and god forbid glossy ACD..

If I didn't have to leave the platform for it, I'd do that. I've invested in pro photo software (PS CS3, Lightroom, some leight-weight RAW processors for when I don't have access to my whole photo library) etc. - so switching platforms would mean a massive financial burden for me. I don't think anybody was expecting apple to drop the photographer- and designer-market.

You can callus anal. But professional will do. That's why they're called MacBook "Pro"
I think you're under the impression that Apple are nice guys who feel that they owe professionals something in return for decades of brand loyalty, but here's the thing: If there is more money to be made elsewhere, they will ditch you in a split second. They're one of the most cynical companies on this planet.

We may not know till wednesday. As of right now the 9600M GT does not have geforce boost w/ the 9100M Chipset. Quote from nvidia's site, "When combining a discrete GPU (GeForce 9300M GS or GeForce 9200M GS) with GeForce 9100M G motherboard GPU, GeForce Boost technology kicks in for an increase of performance. This is equivalent to a GeForce 9400M discrete GPU class performance." Funny though the 9400M is not announced yet. Hopefully the other gpu's will be geforce boost comp with the 9400.

That's what I'm hoping. Nothing can currently GeForce Boost with the 9600M GT, but maybe the as yet unannounced 9400M that everyone is saying is in the new notebooks, can?

If it can you're going to see high end graphics performance, if not, you're going to see pathetic graphics performance for a Pro laptop with just a measly 9600M GT working on it's own...

I appreciate the reply, was just thinking through if I should go with this update or if there was going to be another early next year with newer CPUs. Thanks again

You, on the other hand, seem to be under the impression that people should just take whatever is offered and otherwise keep their mouth shut – even on a forum like this.

I hope the glossy only is the wrong information.

I'm a professional photographer and I use a macbook *PRO* to do my work, which cannot be achieved with a screen that enhances reality.

I do no know *any* photographer doing editing on a glossy screen. This would be a serious limitation.

I sold my matte MBP just yesterday, knowing I would always have the option to re-buy the 'old' one at a discounted rate.... I may just have to do this as all the new features are offset by this glossy screen :-(

Well said, can't agree with you any more

!? Why do you do any color critical work on a laptop screen to begin with? You should really look at getting something like one of the nice LaCie monitors that have the port to plug your colorimeter directly in.

Then he won't need a PRO computer to work, so what's the point of expending $2000 in something you don't need. That's exactly what photographers are complaining about

No matter what, people will always moan and whine on these message boards. Get used to it. Everybody has a right to express their opinion, and if you don't like negative posts, maybe you shouldn't read these messages.

He also confirms our report about an $899 24" LED Apple Cinema Display.

 Call me crazy, but I think $900.00 is still a bit much for a 24" display. You can get a 1080p 32" LCD TV for about that much.

Well, I'll be scratching that off my list.

Haha. That has to be the best typo this week (yes, you corrected it, sorry to bring it back)!!!

Yes. Git!

Typos do have that infuriating habit of cropping when you're on a rant about professionalism, spelling or grammar. They're effing great that way.
