I'd really love to know why all of you people hate glossy so much? What's the big deal?

My girlfriend is in her third year studies of graphic design and she's using an iMac 24" at home for all her work. It's glossy and she doesn't seem to suffer from it being glossy? What in fact is there to hate about a glossy screen? I just don't seem to get it all.

Two words:

Colour. Accuracy.

Or really, the lack thereof.

If the rumours are true, I imagine lots of people won't be buying a new MBP. As a current MBP owner (a 1yr old 2.5GB with 4GB of RAM) I'm certainly not prepared to buy a new MBP with only the option of Glossy screen. I hate them! Anyone wanting to create or edit any sort of content will be sticking with what they have. The small upgrade benefit just doesn't justify the cost when there are negatives as big as that.

If true that's a huge shot in the foot by Apple. We shall see...

Unfortunately, I think a lot of fanboys who would otherwise have bought the MB would buy the MB "pro", jus because of "showing off" as someone stated, and they would get a screen "enhance" to watch their youtube videos.

what happened

to being competitive!?

You can get a macbook pro dell equivalent for £700-£900!!

Apple come on!

Apple is about as well run a company as Enron. These guys are a joke. lol

$300 more for a Macbook with less specs than a current one and no firewire ? hahaha Crackheads

$900 for a 24" Display ? What a steal.

"Pro" computers with glossy only displays? lol only 1 firewire port ? And they want what, $5000 for these ? I could built a better Pro computer with a cardboard box and 9 volt battery. The old MBPs value just went through the roof. lol

I don't know anybody with a half a brain that would buy these new pieces of garbage for more money than the better old ones.

No Matte Display. WTF?!

I could understand if they were talking about the Macbook, but the Pro? Come on Apple, who is your target audience? People who watch movies all day on their laptops or people that actually use it for work...

I'm the only guy in my office with a matte display and it makes such a difference! No damn reflections. I moved to Apple because Vista was so sh*t, I don't want to have to move back... please don't choose form over function.

c'mon Apple, is this supposed to be a joke???

but actually, I'm not that too disappointed, since I was just given the current top-of the line MacBook (with 4GB ram installed) for free by my father... (my tiBook gave up).

At least there is no reason for me to buy a new MacBook Pro now (in case it really has the leaked specs), and just hold out for the first revision, when Apple fixes this thing.

Oh, and one more thing: if they drop firewire, that will be the last nail for me! I will simply buy a refurbished TOTL last generation aluminium Macbook Pro 15" and squeeze every last day out of it... I did that with my tiBook and it suited me just fine.

I'm flabbergasted about the MBP glossy display and MacBook pricing. This is such bad news. Honestly, I see Apple's stock taking a major hit tomorrow.

Needless to say, I will look elsewhere for a laptop with a matte display. I just can't deal with that iMac-type glare. :(

FTA: " - $1299: 2.0 GHz, 2 GB memory, 160 GB disk "

Erm... The current $1299 2.4 GHz MacBook also sports 2 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. So essentially they're keeping the same price point, yet knocking off 400 MHz and FireWire while adding an nVidia chipset. That makes no sense whatsoever.

if these prices and configs are right, i would be extremely disappointed; lead up to this event had me pretty excited, and at this point im seriously considering skipping a new laptop all together. time will tell.

It seams people are very divided on the rumored new look.

But still no ultra-portable Mac?

However, I might like it more when Apple's marketing photography works it's wonders :p

Besides the annoying glare that results from using glossy-screened laptops in several different lighting conditions,

I seem to get headaches while using them that I do not get while using matte-screened laptops.

...Just my 2 cents

When the $1299 and $1499 MacBooks won't have any FireWire, that would be a complete rip-off at that price-point. Many older Mac users who want to trade in their Apple notebook and who do have FireWire peripherals won't be able to buy a cheap Mac notebook newer style. Also new-to-Mac persons who have older or recent DV and HDV camcorders won't be able to connect them to their new MacBooks, if FireWire rumors hold true. These people will have to buy an old style white MacBook.

I'm still hoping to see a combo Ethernet/FireWire port (S800T), as every Mac seems to be moving towards FireWire 800 only. The 20" iMac even gained FireWire 800, whereas the white had two FireWire 400 ports. So with this new technology, Apple could reduce one port, while gaining FireWire speed.

$900 for a 24" Display ? What a steal.

As much as I whinge and moan about Apple's idiotic moves, you're in the wrong here.

The Cinema Displays are NOT meant to compete with the trash that comes from most manufacturers. Apple uses IPS panels in the Cinema Displays, not the laughable TN and somewhat-less-crappy-than-TN PVA panels.

When shopped by people who actually understand what the Cinema Display is, it's not a bad deal.

This is not fact yet? is it?

No. It's rumour based on a blurry image that may or may not be real. It's one image that shows a glossy screen....if the image is real then there is always a chance that a matte screen version also exists.

I can't believe that Apple would phase out matte screens on the Pro...it just doesn't make sense.

I believe the 2.0 Ghz is DEFINITELY a mistake. Considering that they will likely update the entire line to 45nm, 1066Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache processors, there are only the P8400 (2.26Ghz) and the P8600 (2.4Ghz) available in this category. These will be the CPUs used in the low-end and high-end MB respectively.

The P7350 (2Ghz) can be outruled I hope - it would be cheaper than the T8100 used in the current low-end MB but the computer would be sold at a higher price point. Does not make any sense. I mean Apple is much but not suicidal.

Notice: The P8400 and P8600 are medium-voltage and not standard-voltage CPUs. Expect to see longer battery life!!!

Besides she's also in the waiting game like all the rest of us to update her iBook with a new MacBook. And I'm looking to buy my first Mac Notebook! A 15" MBP please. One that will also be capable to play Starcraft 2 / Diablo 3 at high quality with decent fps. And for the rest I'll use in combination with my M-Audio musical equipment / dj stuff.

I dont hate it... actually it looks really nice and vibrant. Just personal preference plus matte displays are more accurate at displaying colors for print work... majority of what i do.

I'm hoping Steve pulls a price drop out of his back pocket, or else stocks are going to fall like crazy...

Wait a second, 17" MBP being phased out? What does that mean? 18" forthcoming? Whatever, I just hope the gloss doesn't look too crazy next to my matte 30".

No.

Remember how when the first MacBook Pro was just introduced? It was a 15", and at the time the 12" and 17" PowerBooks were still being sold... Same story here, First the 15" is introduced, then a month or two later the 17" will be.
