The HDD has always been user-upgradable.

Much, much more painful than with a macbook, but far less than with those ibook bastards

The HDD has never been user-upgradebale in the PB or MBP. It was upgradable but not user-upgradable without voiding your warranty. The MB is the only notebook to have a user-upgradable HDD.

For all those who have held out for months, I hope the wait was worth it!

it will be for me no matter what. I am using an old HP 1.3 ghz from 2004...haha anything is better than this...did i mention 60 gb harddrive? yea sucks

I just had to come here and add my voice to those dismayed about the apparent lack of a Matte finish. Now the whole world is stuck with stupidly shiny surfaces that displays over-saturated colors.

I'll probably have no more reasons to buy a pro with this update... good job, Apple.

Uh, you have some proof that matte screens will not even be a CTO option? If so cough it up. Otherwise shhhh. I know in the mad, mad world of netroots rumor = fact, but hey, let's at least give SJ a chance to speak and the Apple Store a chance to post all the CTO options before we start the moan-fest. I'd like a matte scree too, just saying we should hold fire until we know the facts.

It's great if the Macbook Pro FINALLY comes with a user replaceable drive, but I'm incredibly disappointed if they didn't upgrade the GPU, as these rumors say.

Ditto for there them not having Blu Ray :(

It seems ALMOST as ridiculous as making it out of glass. Ever slide your finger across an iPhone? Takes about a week. That would be LOADS of fun trying to use a pointer on a 15" screen

One of two things is about to happen: Apple will blow us way by showing us something that does NOT correspond with latest rumors or....

We are in for the letdown of the year..maybe 5 years
Well that's what you guess for basing what you want on a bunch of useless rumours.

Let's say the NVIDIA chipsets do make the new 2.0 ghz notebooks faster, the AVERAGE consumer will say, "hey wait a minute", and I'm sure Apple knows that....Then again, I think processor speeds did drop slightly when Apple made the transition to Santa Rosa, as did the cpu cache size from 4 MB to 3 MB...so what do I know?!?!?!

Well people have been complaining about this one thing ever since I started reading the discussion. It doesn't make sense to drop the speed of the processor at all to me. Plus, the updates haven't even happened yet. It just seems too much like a typo to me. I'm sure people would complain if it were the real deal. All I'm saying is it might not be true, since there are a lot of rumors going around, people shouldn't jump to conclusions and complain nonstop until the actual update happens.

Others have said it well:
  • Don't be an early adopter, wait for Rev B, always
  • If you are, for the love of science get AppleCare, not doing so is suicidal
That's been true of most apple products (esp. laptops) since the ibooks/powerbooks era, so it's not like it's breaking news.

My Rev A 12" PowerBook is still going strong and I've used it for hours every day since I got it, right when it was released. :D

Are there any other first-adopters who are nervous about the hardware quality. I was a first-adopter of the first gen intel MBP and I experienced nothing but problems.

I've still got my 1.83Ghz MBP and have had zero problems with it other than a battery and power cable that Apple replaced free of charge.

I did return my MB Air after 3 months of use due to numerous core shutdowns and it not performing as I expected. It was a great laptop otherwise. I've got a good relationship with my local Applestore and they took it back without any penalties to me.

I own three other Apple computers and a Time Capsule (and a Dell Mini 9 running OSX) and have not had a problem with any of them!

I still don't understand the animosity towards glossy screens. For the 99.99% of us that don't do graphic design (the userbase has shifted, folks), the glossy screens provide great contrast on video, look great with games, etc.

I don't watch video on a tiny laptop screen, I do it on my widescreen TV with my HTPC plugged to it.
Likewise, I might play games on a laptop once in a blue moon, but I would much rather play them on my desktop PC, with its 24" monitor powered by the 8800GTX, than on a tiny laptop LCD powered by an anemic GPU (even if it is discrete).

However, I do work on my laptop. I do follow courses on it. I do sort photographies during my holidays. For all these uses, the glossy screen makes my work more difficult and less pleasurable. I see no point in putting something between the screen and myself that only makes my user experience less pleasant. What next? Turning the keyboard into a tazer so that I hurt everytime I type on it?

People who buy a MBP vs a MB do it because they have needs. One of these need is that they use their computer a lot, and as such, their experience is important. Because if their experience is bad, they won't be able to work for extended periods of time. This is what features that won't bother consumers are important on a "pro" laptop : matte screen, silence, decent keyboard...

No matte - no good. Hope there'll be an reasonably easy way to exchange the display... but then again, I'll probably not be getting an new MBP within the next 12 months or so.

Any last minute hope on a better card than the useless 9600M GT or GeForce Boost being enabled to make the 9600M GT and the integrated GPU work together?

Because so far there's about a 1% improvement in graphical performance over the old machines.

hmmm maybe the black trim around my HP's screen cuts down on the glare....maybe that's the reason the new macs are black trimmed. I don't really notice glare

I don't notice it either unless the screen is really dark. Same with my iPod Touch. I only notice it if I turn the screen off, but while its on, I see no glare at all! Maybe the black causes contrast so you see the glare on the black border, but not over the picture. Good point :)

I am a little concerned about the glossy displays though. Not convinced, would have to look at one "in person" to see if I can live with it.

I'm not going to argue with Apple's research, but boy does it suck to be in the minority. I'm glad I switched to a desktop lifestyle this year -- Mac Pro at home and in office and iPhone for mobile use.

Regarding all the rumors, if Apple wants to reclaim its ability to surprise people, it may have to pre-announce products. As products make their way downstream these days, it seems that too many people have access for the products to remain a secret. I enjoy Mac Rumors, but I miss the old days of being surprised.

+1

What would be the motive for an upgrade for someone like myself who already has a macbook but doesnt need to upgrade to the MBP.

I'm sure Apple had you in mind. Seriously most people keep their laptops around for 2-4 years before dumping. That is who Apple is going after... most people, not the narrow band of people who upgrade every cycle. There is no way Apple could compete or keep up trying to making a every new model vastly superior to the preceding.

Also motivation comes from inside. If you don't feel the need to upgrade right now then don't. Apple will not suffer because at some point you will feel the need and they will get your $ then. It all works out.
