What a gimmick. Who's going to drool over a fingerprint sensor once the novelty wears off?

Much rather un updated lock screen, meaning a proper OS update.

Or maybe multiple user profiles, so that the phone automatically switches to the correct profile when the user picks it up? There are more applications to this technology than just security.

Hopefully iOS7 will support multiple users. :cool:

Encrypted in the cloud...

But nothing is entirely secure. Data will be shared and money buys anything. How long will it be until organized crime or any criminal or vindictive person has the ability to create fingerprints at crime scenes to pin the crime on an ordinary joe. Remember once it is out there even if encrypted it is never completely secure and we can never go back.

I have been victim of several identity things due to having a common name. I was almost faslely arrested because of data issues in databases...again due to a common name. I also had a background check come back bad despite a clean record. It took me months to get my name cleared and get cleared for the employer I was applying to. So I want a physical fingerprint to fall back on and would hate to have my electronic fingerprint connected falsely to someone else's record in some database.

You might call me paranoid but to be honest I don't even use a passcode on my iOS devices because it is just an electronic device. It just isn't that important that I protect my friends addresses, my phone contact list or my apps and music.

Remember when you had to go to a Mac rumor site to read baseless rumors? Now they get published as if they're real news. "Journalism" has become utter garbage.

The journalists target a viewership. They know what stories get the most clicks. You can see a ranking of the most popular stories on the Wall Street Journal website, and the Apple rumors always streak to the top upon release. It isn't rocket science; it's business.

I'm not worried. Apple is still making billions and billions and billions of dollars in profit, and that is all that matters to a true fan. That is the reason why we all fell madly in love with Apple in the first place.

We fell in "love with Apple" because they can make money like any other corporation?

I personally like the products and don't really care if Apple can profit by giving us the bare minimum upgrades. I'm getting tired of it, quite frankly.

Never thought this was a great implementation on Android. Sure it's nice if you miss your screen from lighting up, but if I get a text and all I see is an LED light blinking I have to wake the screen any way. Again, it's nice and novel for missed notifications, but an LED light only tells so much.

The point of the color LED is so that I can set colors to specific apps/contacts/etc. That way I at least have an idea what information is waiting for me. I like that personally.

Immensely disappointing... But they gotta keep up with the recent trend so it makes sense...

iPhone 5S -> Fingerprint reader
iPhone 6 -> Extra row of icons

Can't wait for the excitement

So it's ok when Samsung makes a Galaxy S3(AKA S4), but when Apple does it, they're doomed? As a GS3 owner, I can't wait for the next iPhone, mainly for iOS 7, but still excited! :cool:

When you send your fingerprint phone back to Apple, how do they turn it on? Oh yeah, there is some secret way, that thieves and others will know about 10 minutes after the phone hits the street. Or, we could use the, chop the hand off and press the finger on the button, action movie I saw the other day!!

1. This will almost certainly be for unlocking an iPhone, not turning it on.

2. Apple (or anyone else) will still be able to force-restore an iPhone, as we can today. This lets you regain access to the iPhone, but (crucially) not the personal data stored on it.

3. The fingerprint will likely be an alternative to the traditional passcode, i.e.: You could still unlock with passcode if the fingerprint detection failed for some reason.

i hope you're joking. i couldn't care less how much profit they make, im not a shareholder. The reason I like Apple was because their computers were much better than the competition, then they made the best phone but im not so sure about the best phone part anymore. come on apple, step it up!

This whole thread is just hilarious. Wait a month, wait another two years, are your lives *really* going to be "enhanced" by *another* iPhone revision? If you seek happiness, stop seeking possessions that you don't even need, and seek God :)

oh the irony

Not sure why apple cares so much about a finger print sensor. I guess this means we don't have to enter our passcode every time we unlock the device and we don't have to enter a password every time we download a new app. Not a big deal but I guess those two things would be nice to get by quicker.

Fingerprint sensor

Does this mean they really are going to implement this new hardware-feature in the iPhone 5S? Anyway, I hope it won't delay the iPad 5. I could not care less about having a fingerprint-sensor on any iDevice.

I think having a finger print sensor would be great, especially if it can recognize any finger. I imagine it would be easier than typing in a code on the lock screen or any of the other current methods of unlocking a password protected phone. It would be awesome if it had different permission levels too... I can dream.

I don't want my fingerprint out there in digital form. I will not use it EVER i dont want to pay for it either I am fine with just remembering a lock screen code. There is alreadyWAY TOO MUCH of my personal information out there in the public digital world.
I understand the concern, but this worry could be addressed completely, depending upon the implementation. For example the process could be; your phone scans your finger. Software isolates key features. These features are combined into a data blob. The data blob is hashed to generate a unique token. This token is the only peice ever used for authentication.
While this token is unique to you and derived from your finger, it is done in a lossy non-reversible manner that can not be used to regenerate the original fingerprint. Even if Apple's system were completely compromised, it wouldnt be a bad as the loss of a password database. They would simply need to change the hash to get back to a clean/secure state (you would need to revalidate your scan after such a reset)
Keep in mind that this implementation is just based on my own thoughts on the subject.

Apple has become so lazy its crazy....

They only update the design every two years. Alright, I'm okay with that. But that should mean that theyd have to use the extra ressources to ace themselves spec wise. Speed bumps and camera bumps are not very hard things to do . I'm not saying its no work at all but how come other companies (HTC) can do both in one year?

Cheaper iPhone, if it happens, might come out differently, but was a new iPhone ever introduced without a new iOS version? Was a new version of iOS ever introduced without third party developers having a couple of months to work with and find bugs before the public release? There has been no iOS previews, let alone iOS semi-public betas out. Apple may have wanted to release a new iPhone in whatever month earlier than it is going to release it, but there does not seem to be an unexpected delay due to just one hardware component.

Of course, if you made a dumb prediction, now it is time to make up some flimsy excuse.

The funniest part is that a novice could easily assume that the release would be in the fall after there was no announcement iOS announcements in the spring.

I agree although I do have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, I'm totally with you. I only spend a few seconds at a time unlocking my phone but over the course of a day I do that tens (maybe hundreds) of times so having a fingerprint sensor would be a a great convenience and timesaver.

On the other hand, depending on how Apple implements it, case manufacturers may have a doozy of a time working around it which raises the possibility that it may not be functional to have a case on the next phone. While I personally don't mind scratches and dents, I do keep my iPhone in a case strictly to maintain resale value (I always sell mine in mint condition for a good coin when upgrading).

So in a very round about way, I do hope Apple makes a serious effort to make the phone as scratch and dent resistant as possible.

When I was in pre-school I remember they took all the children for a tour of the police station. During that tour, we all had our fingerprints taken for fun. As a child of 5, we had no idea it was intrusive nor could we resist. They were doing that in the 80s. I'd imagine they are still doing stuff like that and the government has a database of most people out there.

What about the new iPad? Will it not have the fingerprint sensors? Seems like, but I don't quite get the reason why....

This thing could be HUGE.

Imagine that iOS recognize you when you unlock the iPad.

Father swipe -> Father session
Son swipe -> Son session

all transparent, no technical ********. your icloud session follows you whatever device you use. This would be HUGE.

Add to this iTunes match for both audio and videos, ultimate thing.
