Apple has been known to plant false rumors to find out leaks in their company and the nano may very well be one of those false rumors.

There is no point. I Really don't think the screen is the device, but rather part of a larger device. Think of the current nano, minus the click wheel. now add that screen to the spot where the click wheel is. There you go.

Vitual clickwheel,

However, if the CASES rumor is correct, it seems this lil-screen is the whole of some device. Either that or the case goes to a shuffle G2 type device.

An iPod Touch with 3G will require a new battery to accommodate the power draw. It means the new Touch can be more expensive. The nano with smaller platform may eliminate the shuffle altogether.

Well the touch is bound for a redesign (Same design for 3 years already) and of course a better battery regardless if it gets 3G or not and if it gets 3G there will be an option of a wifi only and a wifi and 3G

There's already a 3G version of the 4th gen iPod Touch. It is called iPhone 4. A separate ipod touch with 3g will not happen, it could cannibalize a lot of their flagship product which is the iPhone

there are people out there that wants a apple product whether it be iPod, iPhone or ipad. people who buy the ipod mostly cause they can't afford the iphone rate

so ipod will not cannibalize their product and apple knows it, otherwise they would stop making the ipod years ago.

Because the touch can make phone calls right?

Doesn't matter if the touch couldn't make phone calls or SMS. Many people buy iPhones just to use the 3G data service. Personally when I first bought an iPhone it wasn't the phone part that interested me, it was the ability to use the internet anywhere. Then again, Wi-Fi wasn't nearly as widespread as it is now when I got my first-gen iPhone.

A 3G iPod touch just doesn't fit well right now. The fact that we have heard no similar rumors before about it seems to indicate someone heard the wrong information. A smaller iPad (as dumb as I think that sounds) is way more likely than a 3G iPod touch.

The reason it doesn't cannibalize it is because it separates itself. As soon as you put a camera and 3G data on it, then there isn't much difference. To the average consumer they might even be confused by it and think it's a new iPhone.

i think the so called new nano would be better as a new shuffle, since the current ipod shuffle suck anyway.

don't forget over the course of two years you will be paying over $2000 for the damn thing.

wifi is still not available everywhere and places it is you have to log in with a key or something.

Only if it looks exactly the same and has the same packaging etc. Most people are not stupid.

You give people way too much credit. There were a lot of people who thought the iPod touch was an iPhone when it first came out. It took quite awhile for people to get used to the idea that they were different.

3G on an iPod will be horrible for business because then the iPhone will definatly see a lose in sales. I can go to the store and get a free phone with some minutes, and have my iPod touch with data so I would have all things on an iPhone without the iPhone. It works for an iPad because that won't really work as a phone substitute.

I doubt very much that the buyer doesn't know the difference before handing over his/her cash. please . .
It's not like it's a cheap impulse buy.

I doubt that apple who run a tight ship of 30,000 employees haven't the faintest clue . . . There are so many devices coming out from competitors in the next few months that Apple would be stupid not to offer 3G on their ipod.

The more devices the more customers, the more sales of Apps, Music, Games, Movies and eBooks and the more advertising revenue from iAdd.

No Touch

I don't think there's even going to be a new iPod Touch. Just the Nano/Shuffle thingie and some iTunes hype.

But I'll buy a Touch if it comes with a back facing camera.

Yeah. Few have. My predictions are a digital only iLife 2011. Sell for $29. You must buy it online and then you will be given a link to the download site (or even download it though itunes) No CDs or DVDs given. Thus costing less to produce (no boxes, no discs, no shipping. All of this could brijng the price down to $29. )

Oh please, the DVD and box are a dime a dozen.
The reason they cost a lot is because it takes a lot of programming genius to put together these programs and they need to be paid for their works.

+ a little extra money in Apple to purchase some massive data centers and make an iTunes cloud never hurt anyone.

Exactly. People are tending to forget the app store and those camera and 3G apps.

and I hope the 94 is not the year you were born in. Being 16 does not mean you know everything,

1) Apple makes most of their money off hardware sales, not Apps, Music, Games, Movies and eBooks. The iTunes store was always designed to sell hardware, not to make Apple big profits off selling digital goods. They have said time and time again that their profits are just slightly above breaking even. Their goal isn't to sell tons to make money, it's to lock people into their stores so they sell hardware. Making a 3G iPod touch does not help hardware sales of the iPhone, and so it is a bad idea.

2) I really hope you are not patronizing somebody for being 4 years younger than you, that is just childish attacks and you need to watch yourself. There is no need for that here.

Theres bound to be an update. Not only have we had the same design for 3 years, but with the recent improvements, the hardware could reallly take avantage of the new iOs 4

and also keep in mind Apple has always updated the iPods one way or another. Apple will be committing suicide if they just do what you say.

You also tend to forget that optical media is going out. I wouldnt be surprised if Apple comes out with more macs with out opical drives or even offer a BTO for an extra hard drive in place of a super drive.

and the data center has nothing to do with this,

Yes, but remember they get like what? 70% of the revune. It all adds up.
Making a 3G iPod touch does not help hardware sales of the iPhone, and so it is a bad idea.

So I guess they should stop making a touch then? People are being blinded by the light here. Since when can the touch make phone calls?

Most of the revenue goes to operating costs of running the store. You can get all the information you need from Apple's quarterly earnings reports. They have always stated that they barely make a profit at all off the iTunes store. It is about selling hardware, and providing a value added service for that hardware, nothing else. It's not like operating a major online store costs no money, it takes a lot more than you think.

I never said they should stop making the iPod touch, it clearly has a market, but when you add 3G functionality that would hurt the sales of the iPhone. Making phone calls or SMS is not the only reason people buy an iPhone, they also buy it for the camera and 3G data connection. There is really no disputing the fact that adding both a (rear facing) camera and 3G data to the iPod touch would remove two features that people buy an iPhone for.

Why would you assume that the iPhone has a greater profit margin than the iPod touch? They don't make any money on the contract. That's AT&T. So if Apple puts out another 3G capable device, they sell more devices. I don't think they care which device you buy. And I wouldn't doubt it if they don't care what carrier you use. What if they came out with an iPod touch that could work with Verizon? Apple has an exclusive contract for the phone, but what about the iPod touch?

They do to make money off of the contract.

I can go to the store and get a free phone with some minutes, and have my iPod touch with data so I would have all things on an iPhone without the iPhone. The loss in sales would likely be made up in the gain of sales for the iPod touch.

They do to make money off of the contract.

Yes, and I would imagine the only reason AT&T agreed to that was because of the exclusive partnership. Seeing that the exclusive partnership ends soon I would imagine that the monthly revenue might end soon as well.

So perhaps Apple is in a position now where cannibalizing the iPhone isn't such a bad thing? Especially if they can work out the price point of a 3G Touch to give them comparable revenue. Maybe they've even worked out a way to get a cut of the data only plan (contract or no contract)?

IF the itouch were to get 3g (which if it does, it won't be announced this week) I would guess it costs at least $100-$130 more than the base model itouch without 3g. This would bring the costs of the itouch to about $100-$130 more than the iphone (at least in the states). I believe that in itself would make the iphone appeal more to the average customer than the 3g itouch, with the 3g itouch catering to a more specific niche of customer. Regardless of the itouch cannibalizing the iphone or not, there will be more customers using apps, downloading music, and looking at iads if apple were to add an itouch with 3g. Because of this, I don't think that a 3g itouch is that unreasonable of an idea for some of ya'll to be getting angry over.

Oh, I think the Touch will be updated, just not right now. The game plan seems
to be to dole out the improvements little by little these days. I don't really expect a back facing camera when the Touch gets it's update either, but I'm hoping. If it were my call, I'd do something to the Touch to make it desirable in a different way than the iPhone, like a really good camera.
