Oh, I think the Touch will be updated, just not right now. The game plan seems
to be to dole out the improvements little by little these days. I don't really expect a back facing camera when the Touch gets it's update either, but I'm hoping. If it were my call, I'd do something to the Touch to make it desirable in a different way than the iPhone, like a really good camera.

but this is an ipod event and Apple has never updated their ipods outside of september.

The only way your theories would be true is if the touch moves to the ipad family (or even the "iOS" family and the iPhone moves too) but even if that did happen it would be next year. The touch is in dire need for an update

Confused by that last bit as the iPhone 4 already has a really good camera.

Wrong, outside of this year there has always been a refresh in Jan/Feb of one of the lines. 32GB Touch for the 1st gen touch in feb of 2008, colors for the shuffle in Jan of 2007, etc.

iPod touch can already be used as a phone now when it is near Wi-Fi using SIP phone apps. (Whiste, Skype etc. ). For those who are really motivated, then can get a pocket sized 3G unit which has Wi-Fi connectivity.

A lot of people do not yet go the 3G route because the 3G bandwidth needed for phone call is still spotty, even beyond the inconenience of remembering to carry that 3G unit. Even over wi-fi, lack of a built-in mic+speaker makes it useful as a phone only for those who are truly motivated.

With built-in speaker+Mic, with 3G, with background+push based phone apps, it becomes a compelling proposition as a mobile phone device. If Apple does not do it, there will be someone like HTC who will do that and slap Android on it.

Is there any evidence that iPod touch class devices running Android are about to make a major appearance in the American market? Where have they been the last year or so?

Is there any evidence that Apple wants to truly blur the line between iPhone and iPod yet? The two devices have become more convergent in recent iterations, and will continue to do so. Over the long horizon, they might possibly merge. Until FaceTime is officially sanctioned over 3G, I don't see Apple giving users the choice to create for themselves a VOIP phone that might have a less than perfect user experience.

Most importantly, is there any evidence that 3G networks are up to scale that the carriers would be willing to support such a device absent a 2 year data contract?

Played with another nano mockup with the virtual click wheel.

Having two screens on the iPod nano is just such a terrible idea. I can't believe anyone thinks Apple would ever consider it. There is no reason for it at all and it would just confuse people. People understand the concept of a clickwheel, but as soon as you throw in this weird two screen thing people will get confused.

Don't even try to justify why it would be a good idea, it will never happen. The iPod touch having 3G will happen before the iPod nano gets two screens.

So people will get confused over a smaller screen and a bigger one.. Even if the smaller one had a vitural click wheel and the larger one had the content.

Even what you just said there was confusing. A smaller one having a virtual click wheel? Why even bother doing that when you can conserve battery and have the existing click wheel? Just so you can display some additional information? There is already a way to display additional information, it's called making a bigger screen, and that's what they did with the iPod/iPhone.

+1 Apple engineer. +10 sarcasm.

Exactly. Making a larger screen would be cheaper, technologically easier, software-wise easier and more intuitive to the customer.

agree somewhat

I don't see how iMovie or iDVD are usable even on a consumer level. They're dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. Combining them would be ideal, but why not focus on giving iMovie/iDVD more features, specifically in the editing arena? I feel like I'm using the trial version of some imaginary official app.

I am not a fan of the current iMovie as stated, I think the leap they made from the previous version made things confusing from previous users (I know many who agree). Imovie is great for people not wanting to jump into FC or even FC Express, I know lots of people who just want to get their video on a DVD and make it simple. They don't have the time to do what we do.
As a pro user I like to have all options available. I think iDVD is great for a simple menus, leaving out the work on DVD Studio (which of course is way bette, just not as time friendly). iMovie is great for family DVD's, simple to the point. I prefer using FC to edit and just find a nice temp to use with it, add in the music and pics myself and a okay menu is on screen. i have never used it for real pro use.
I can see why they would combine them both, common sense, for the non pro user. Just let me download the soon to be gone iDVD, or be able to keep it, an option would be great.
iMovie/iDVD will make it easier for their users in the long run. I do think iMovie blows away whatever comes on a your common windows machine and certainly needs an update. No matter what I will find a way to make it all work.
There is no real reason to get rid of iDVD, just keep it as is and take it out of the dock, keep in Application folder, and let the new iMovie run wild, problem solved.

No need to knock iMovie it helps a lot of people out there who do not take video work as serious as we do. For instance I love Garageband and I am a musician, there is a tool for everything if you can find a way to make it work for you.

As for iWEB, I really hope they update iWeb to make it more functional on Windows based computers. I am not a web designer and love iWeb. I always wanted to learn more about web design, but I have enough to bog me down, so keep iWeb easy to use, pro looks, and slick. I thought the last update would be better but sadly I was not that impressed.

I am still scratching my head at last years decision to put a camera in the nano instead of the touch. Doesn't seem logically still to this day. I am guessing it won't have one this time and the touch will.

i don't think Apple would shrink the iPod nano and give it a square screen. Too awkwardly small. I think the nano could get a touch screen and lose its separate click wheel. The click wheel would be superimposed on the touch screen only when needed.

But a square form factor could be just the ticket for a watch-like device. No idea if this has been discussed before, but if so, I apologize. It would run iPod OS with a new "Time" app running in watch mode. And, if it's cheap enough, it could act as a really cool remote for the next-gen Apple TV...

This.

Huge watches are all the rage these days - - I for one am not going to be surprised to see Apple take the bull by the horns (as they always do) and jump into the wrist-top computer market as yet another cornerstone of their media technology empire.

Watch for it Wednesday.

If this mockup of the new Nano is close to the real thing, they'll probably merge the Nano and Shuffle lines into this alleged Nano touch iPod. The iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch are the ones that are really popular.

Put 128 GB into a new iPod Touch and they'll might even drop the Classic or make an 10th anniversary Classic and then make it EOL next year.

No 3G in the Touch is my guess. If you really want and need an Apple device with 3G, you'll find a way to get past issues like contracts and such, and buy iPhone or iPad instead.

I might way off here, but we'll se quite soon, won't we... ;)

-iOS 4.1, bug fixes, better stability, fixes the sluggish iPhone 3G and 3GS
-Maybe some news about the white iPhone and why it's so late.
-iTunes X / 10 - Rewritten and 64 bit
-There might be some big news related to iTunes Store and a way to compete against streaming services such as Spotify.
-New 32, 64 & 128 GB iPod Touch with 3.2 or 5 MP camera with photo and HD video capability (and iMovie) + front facing camera for Face Time (with iChat...?). No 3G.
-Classic might also see the end of line, but there also might be an anniversary Classic.
-No iLife '11. That'll be a different event. This time of year is usually about iPods and iTunes.
-Apple TV might also see a refresh with new design and features related to streaming and iTunes. Today's Apple TV is old!

There was a leaked photo of an iPod touch with a camera. I'm still not sure why that never never surfaced into the final product.

If Apple releases a 3G-enabled iPod Touch, what reason would anyone have going forward to buy an iPhone, especially if the Touch also gets front and rear cameras? You could simply use WiFi or 3G to make phone calls via Skype or Vonage, and only pay about $30 a month for the privilege of doing so.

Yeah I am going to have to say the 3G thing is bogus. It works for an iPad because it's not a phone replacement, but the iPod touch could easily be used for that.

Which is exactly why I don't think the iPod touch will get 3g.

I think they will release a 3G capable ipod touch. Most people that want a phone buy a phone, try telling my co-workers that arent real tech savvy that they can just skype or vonage, they dont want to go through the hassle. Even tho we are like uhhhh... its easy, cheaper, etc etc etc.

But on the other hand, people that use it (ipod) for jogging, etc and want to look something up real quick or whatever, 3G could come in handy

Well I just hope the ipod nanos controls stay on the device and aren't controlled from the headphones like the shuffle is. Really irritating that is. I don't like the ipod earphones and you'd have go out and buy one of those adaptors with the controls on.

64-bit iTunes question

I'm not particularly technologically minded;

what are the benefits/changes of a 64-bit iTunes?
