apparently...

I don't understand why some people are so offended (not you obviously but others) with a 3g ipod touch. I assume most are current iphone owners who can't stand the thought of other people getting their benefits without having to pay an outrageous monthly bill?

It has been stated many times that the iphone is not very good as a PHONE. I and I know many others will not get an iphone because we need a reliable phone and can't compromise on this function but would also like to have smartphone like capabilities and the app store. I have friends who have an ipod touch and while they like it they agree that much of its value is lost because you need wifi (which contrary to popular belief is NOT everywhere. seriously I live in boston and I have to think about where I can get free wifi, I don't know what some of you are smoking).

I would buy a 3g ipod touch in a heartbeat. It would be my ideal device but of course we'll just have to wait until sept 1st and see what apple rolls out. Maybe they'll have it maybe they won't. No need for everyone to get all worked up until then I suppose...

It is not about iPhone owners being personally offended by the existence of an iPod with 3G and a prepaid data plan. It is totally about the ability of Apple to deliver a product with the features that people are expecting at a certain price point and the willingess of carriers to permit such a device with such a plan on their network.

There is nothing preventing AT&T from selling a no-commitment iPhone and charging people 'n' amount for data and charging per minute on calls and on individual SMS sent.

Imagine being the AT&T CEO for a moment. You already know you are losing the lucrative exclusivity on the iPhone. You have already committed yourself to the iPad - a device that is choking your network on relatively low cost prepaid data. Steve Jobs calls you and says that Apple is going to release a 3G version of the iPod and asks you to extend iPad data plans to such a device. Are you really going to voluntarily destroy the minimal gains in network quality to make such a move?

I don't think any consumer would say that such a device is something terrible. I think Apple would love to such a device. I just don't see how any telecom that already doesn't already decouple data and voice plans on iPhones willing to expose their networks to such a device.

I like the nano mockup! My girlfriends gonna be a bit annoyed if it turns out true though as she hates touch screens! i know, i know... but she just can't get on with them! She does need a new nano for her car though, and i do really like that mockup ;)

Lol, my mother too. She simply cannot use them properly. I do not know if it has something to do with genetics.:)

A 3G iPod touch sounds like a good idea until you look at the cost of the current 16gb touch and add a $130 for 3G (the amount they charge for it on the iPad) and you may as well just get an unlocked iPhone without contract

Wait, that means you would only pay x$(say those 130$) more for it and you have unlimited internet access? That would be awesome.

WAIT! I am confused here about the iPod Touch going 3G, does this mean I would have to pay monthly fees for my Touch or it is my choice to have a 3G? I don't want to pay extra for iPod Touch I just want to use it like any regular iPod, Please tell me this is not true and I am misunderstanding everything.

If Apple releases a 3G-enabled iPod Touch, what reason would anyone have going forward to buy an iPhone, especially if the Touch also gets front and rear cameras? You could simply use WiFi or 3G to make phone calls via Skype or Vonage, and only pay about $30 a month for the privilege of doing so.

A 3G iPod sounds reasonable, although it will probably be tied to AT&T...again.

With 3G, the iPod could tap into GPS and compete with that market. I would get one if that were the case.

I guess everyone's forgotten the rumors about iTunes getting a social media web-interface. That might be what the Apple data center is for.

EDIT: or at least some kind of social media integration.

I don't think Apple is building the data center for a Facebook button in iTunes and a function that tweets what you listen to. It would seem like a slight case of overkill.

If they do it, it will be optional.

the government bailing out banks and car companies with money that we didnt have did... and all of the socialist stuff that the obama admin. is doing isnt going to fix it either.

You mean like how GM, following government intervention, is now profitable and about to be one of the largest ever stock rollouts in history?

here's my nano mockup.

Yet GM still owes ALOT of money to government. Short Term profiting.

Check your facts.

Good to hear that so I could still get wireless internet I just need to find a hotspot, correct?

Yes. They are not going to take that away.

I'd really love to see the 128gb to replace my Classic, and the 3g. From what I've read, though, that's next to impossible right now - not enough room in the chassis.

R.I.P. iPod Nano?

I hope this rumor is not true.

Love the current design, just up the storage capacity....and leave EVERYTHING ELSE the same......PLEASE!!!!

I am ready to buy next week unless the "can't leave well enough alone iPod design team" at Apple has reinvented the iPod Nano (yet once again) into something inferior to its predecessor.

A revamped iWeb is a must. I hope they include some prosumer features for at least editing html titles, tags, body, etc. Like RapidWeaver. No, I don't expect it to be as great as RapidWeaver or even offer close to all of the feature currently available in RW, but take some hints from that great piece of software.

I doubt it will get more advanced or "prosumer". If I had to bet, it will pull several cues from Keynote as far as slick, easy to manage animations go.

Then again, I've been way wrong before. OK, I'm rarely correct. Fine, so none of my guesses have ever been remotely close. One thing's for sure, Apple knows how to surprise.

3G on the iPod touch?
I am going to believe when I see it.
At the moment, it seems totally ridiculous to me.

A pretty safe bet - if not consensus - seems to be the touch getting FaceTime. I mean... somehow Apple have to get out the millions of FaceTime devices Steve Jobs announced Apple to ship. The are not going to do it with iPhones only.

But what's the point of offering an iPod touch with 3G? FaceTime is not supported over 3G, and probably won't be for the foreseeable future. And then, it would be too similar to the iPhone. You could just slap an additional microphone on it and call it the iPhone light. Yet, having 3G internet but no call functionality would make the touch an utterly frustrating product: "It fits into my pants pocket and it has got 3G connectivity - then why can't I make calls with the damn thing?!"). And it's not like 3G modules were super-cheap either...

Personally, I would absolutely love an iPod nano phone. 2G would be fine for voice calls and maybe the occasional text SMS. Omitting 3G would keep manufacturing costs down in line with the nano's retail price and smaller battery capacity. Without App support, Internet Browser, Mail and the like, a nano phone would act as entry-level "iPhone" for Apple - without cannibalizing sales of its bigger (internet- and app-capable) brethren. Also, it'd be a way more "focused" product than a 3G touch.

Of course, Apple could just shrink the nano with yet another new form factor. I really do believe Apple has got to something different with the nano. I work for an Apple reseller and while I don't have actual sales numbers in front of me at the moment, we sell the nano less and less, compared to the previous model (even at the same time of their repective product cycles, that is).

i just bought a new classic with all these touch BS rumors in the air.

I always loved the wheel and i don't need an ipod with a short battery life.

Why loose iDVD

I find iDVD a useful app, even for pro use. If I make a short video in FC I use iDVD. It's simple and doesn't take much time. If they just combine it with iMovie then the way I do some things will be a pain. Not to mention I prefer the previous generation of iMovie. I really hope they don't get rid of iDVD unless they call iit something els, which I don't believe they will, I like new iLife updates but don't take away the apps just make them better...IMO.
Like everything if you don't like it don't use it, that simple. Again IMO.

+10000
I think it is just a upgraded shuffle with this little touch screen (no video, no camera, a "shuffle autonomy", no 32GB...)

I Hope it is the new shuffle in 4-8-16Gb and the new nano 6g it is just a nano 5g with 16-32Gb and a better autonomy

I could care less about face time and I already have a phone that works very well thanks. - I'd like to have my mp3's, surf the web and check emails on the go whenever, where ever, and with a pre-paid data sim.

Is that okay with you ? Because if it doesn't have 3G, then I won't be buying.

And it's not the same as an iphone. As the iphone is the flagship device.
I don't care for making calls, text messaging (sms). And it doesn't need to have some fancy build w/ a glass back and metalic rim.
In fact, silcon rubber is fine. I can throw it on the bed, and jam it down my jeans pocket without too much of a care.

Well, of course there is always a market for an unlocked iPhone. I was merely saying that where there lack unlocked iPhones there would of course be a greater market for a 3G enabled iPod.
My point was that if Apple wanted to tap into that market for unlocked iPhones, they would just need to start selling them. (I assume the exclusivity agreements with the carriers is what is preventing them from doing so, but there aren't that many countries left with exclusivity agreements, the U.S., Germany and a handfull others.)
Particularly in Europe, were travel and shipping among different countries is easy, only selling it unlocked in some countries is just lining the pockets of the intermediaries, like E-Bay and even myself.
