apparently...
I don't understand why some people are so offended (not you obviously but others) with a 3g ipod touch. I assume most are current iphone owners who can't stand the thought of other people getting their benefits without having to pay an outrageous monthly bill?
It has been stated many times that the iphone is not very good as a PHONE. I and I know many others will not get an iphone because we need a reliable phone and can't compromise on this function but would also like to have smartphone like capabilities and the app store. I have friends who have an ipod touch and while they like it they agree that much of its value is lost because you need wifi (which contrary to popular belief is NOT everywhere. seriously I live in boston and I have to think about where I can get free wifi, I don't know what some of you are smoking).
I would buy a 3g ipod touch in a heartbeat. It would be my ideal device but of course we'll just have to wait until sept 1st and see what apple rolls out. Maybe they'll have it maybe they won't. No need for everyone to get all worked up until then I suppose...![]()
It is not about iPhone owners being personally offended by the existence of an iPod with 3G and a prepaid data plan. It is totally about the ability of Apple to deliver a product with the features that people are expecting at a certain price point and the willingess of carriers to permit such a device with such a plan on their network.
There is nothing preventing AT&T from selling a no-commitment iPhone and charging people 'n' amount for data and charging per minute on calls and on individual SMS sent.
Imagine being the AT&T CEO for a moment. You already know you are losing the lucrative exclusivity on the iPhone. You have already committed yourself to the iPad - a device that is choking your network on relatively low cost prepaid data. Steve Jobs calls you and says that Apple is going to release a 3G version of the iPod and asks you to extend iPad data plans to such a device. Are you really going to voluntarily destroy the minimal gains in network quality to make such a move?
I don't think any consumer would say that such a device is something terrible. I think Apple would love to such a device. I just don't see how any telecom that already doesn't already decouple data and voice plans on iPhones willing to expose their networks to such a device.
