More Confirmation Verizon iPhone to Launch on January 11th

I expect there to be a new iPhone this summer for both verizon and AT&T. This phone Tuesday will be a CDMA iphone 4. As for the "short shelf life" thats part of technology. For you guys on this board, if you don't want your shiny new verizon iPhone outdated in 6 months, wait like the rest of us for this summer. Why would apple do this? They want to make money now.

That makes no sense for Apple. No manufacturer wants a product run that short. They lose out on the economies of scale. Financially this would be a bad move for both Apple and Verizon.

If the Verizon iPhone launches within the next 3 weeks, you will not see an update in June/July for the Verizon phone. You will still see one for the GSM model.

I'll bet my paycheck on this one.

You are speaking my language!! I am thinking there will be some minor tweaks to the VZ iPhone that makes it a better model than the ATT. Then the ATT will get the same features in June. It's gonna be similar to the transition from 3G to 3GS nothing amazing, just small bumps. Like an antenna fix.

I hope Apple will clarify how the refresh cycle will work, but we will see.

I wouldn't invite a thief to my party either :)

Good job Apple/Verizon by keeping Gizmodo's tabloid blogging self-aclaimed journalists far away from the front-door.

For those wondering about the possibility of Verizon continuing to offer an unlimited data plan when the iPhone is released, this article by Reuters suggests that they will. Will be VERY happy if this is true. And if that is the case, I believe that that one feature alone will make the Verizon iPhone undoubtedly superior to the current iPhone on AT&T (along with many other factors ).

Verizon to Keep Unlimited Data Plan for iPhone?

Edit: Just read the article over again, and am now second guessing myself. It's late at night, and I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding this. Can someone else check this out and confirm whether or not this article is suggesting that Verizon will use their current service plans, or adopt the current iPhone service plans that are used by AT&T? I really should be in bed.

Edit 2: Having read a few other articles online, I'm pretty sure that my original interpretation was correct. Sounds like they may still be offering the $30 unlimited data plan for it.

here's my issue with this.. I DON'T HAVE AN UPGRADE AVAILABLE! i've called customer service, spoken to people for hours who have spoken to supervisors, and they won't budge. does anyone have any idea how i can get an upgrade so i don't have to pay full retail for it?
i'm thinking of emailing a verizon executive... heard that works

A few years back I had some luck getting them to move up my upgrade date by almost an entire year. I just kept calling in to customer service and asking them if there was any way that they could allow it, until I finally reached a rep who made an exception, but only granted the upgrade a few months earlier. I then tried emailing customer service and explained that I was eager to upgrade (to the BB Storm at the time), and lucky me, the email was directed to a rep who made a note on my account allowing for the upgrade almost a full year early.

I'm sure that I am one of the lucky few that have been able to do this, but just be persistent. Keep calling or emailing until you get through to someone who will work with you. Good luck!

If you don't have an upgrade available then you won't be eligible for 2 yr pricing. If they didn't budge then your not going to hey anywhere, especially since vz is now ditching it's early upgrades and new with 2 credits your going to have to fulfill your 20 mon. before becoming upgrade eligible

yeah i heard about that.. sucks
but i will keep calling/emailing, i'm usually very persistant with verizon and seem to always get my way with them. i also have a supervisor's number who has discounted things for me in the past, so i'm going to try and call him again. hopefully i'll get an upgrade, if not, i'll be spending $600 +tax, assuming the retail price will be the same as the GSM price

When's your upgrade date?

I was eligible for a early upgrade in February, NE2 in October. I guess I am boned. I don't totally understand what they are proposing though, how are people besides new costumers going to get discounted phones? Do we have to wait 2 years, unless there is some promotional deal?

Edit: Rumor is there are more slides to that presentation and that the following slides discuss the new program. Just a rumor though.
Edit2: great first post, me! I should look at dates before I post things.

No, the ETF for your iPhone 4 is $325. However, all ETFs are prorated so you need to determine the prorated amount - the number of months you've had the phone.

I think if you had your contract before they increased the ETF it is the earlier price ($175?). Kind of like how the unlimited data plans are grandfathered in.

No, when you bought an iPhone 4, you signed a new contract with the new ETF. No question.

This happened to me when I wanted to buy the BB Storm when it came out (Don't laugh). I wasn't available for an upgrade for another month. They would not budge. I told them I would cancel - I think the fee was $65 - and they told me, "sorry to hear that let me transfer you to someone who could help." I was shocked they would just let me go that easy. Yes, they would have gotten the $65 from me but they would be missing out on me spending not only $200 on a new phone but also another 24 months worth of bills. I talked to the highest supervisor I could and she just could not understand my theory. In the end they won. I waited another month and upgraded because overall I was happy Verizon.

If your phone is not working as you claim then I would say you could get out without paying an ETF for breach of contract on AT&T's part. Probably will not be the easiest thing to do, but may be worth a try. maybe even return the phone to them in exchange for canceling, unless you can make more than 250 by selling it.

That's a good idea, and at least worth a try. I guess I didn't think of this earlier because there wasn't an alternative. I'm pretty sure I can make more than $250 selling it, unless the market has changed. I sold my last two iPhones on eBay for $300+.

Not in Florida. Verizon works only in the larger area's of people. Terrible between the cities. ATT has good coverage most everywhere here. They problem is dropped calls. All the time. Sure love that Call Failed screen.

That is 100% BS and you couldn't be more wrong if you tried pal. I have lived in FL for over 15 years and have been a Verizon user since the PrimeCo days. Verizon works pretty much EVERYWHERE. I would know, There isn't much of this state that I have not traveled through and let me tell you, Verizon has always worked and worked well. When I had hit an area with little to no coverage, it was so short that I would have coverage within the next mile of travel. Cannot say the same for AT&T who I have had both during the original iPhone and for iPhone 4. Horrible areas of non-coverage.

Both times I had the iPhone I also kept my Verizon phone as a backup and constantly compared the two when traveling. Verizon has so much rural and backroad coverage it's not even close to being a comparison. I actually do A LOT of backroad and rural travel and I can say there are very few areas with no coverage and even in the areas where I had 1 bar of 1XRTT I could still make and maintain perfect calls every time, which is the complete opposite of when I've had 1 bar of EDGE or GSM with AT&T.

I understand we all have our preferences for networks but please don't spout complete and utter BS and misinformation.

It has been said already but it is possible that Verizon would allow early upgrades to individuals whose contract is expiring anytime in 2011. I believe AT&T did it for customers who wanted to early upgrade with the iPhone 4 so there is somewhat of a precedence. If this doesn't happen then just remember patience is a virtue. You've already waited this long. If it's any consolation I'm in the same boat. My contract isn't up until late May. Gonna be a long 5 months.

This is true for someone every time a new phone comes out. Life is not fair. Get a second line. And all the other usual responses :)

Okay, really, this is why it's possible that any Verizon announcement might be similar to the original Jan 2007 iPhone announcement:

iPhone VZ sales might not start until the summer. This would give people more time to save up their upgrades and/or for ATT users to let their contracts lapse.

Just a possibility.
