"Pushing towards a truly wireless future" my butt! Anyone else find it suspicious in this BS push "towards a truly wireless future" that they managed to eliminate the jack that, in order to use one of the two main features of the device, (sound,) without everyone around you being able to overhear what you're listening to, and without you having to strain in some cases, to hear what you're TRYING to listen to over the background noise, you need a device that Apple conveniently recently bought a whole COMPANY that makes JUST that thing you'd now need, and the buying of it requires you to pay a whole bunch of extra money for to regain the functionality your old phone CAME WITH? Anyone else find that odd?
If they had bought a company that made wireless inductive chargers INSTEAD, so that they could totally force customers to buy chargers from them separately and get customers to fork even more money over to Apple, they would have eliminated the lightning jack FIRST. This "push" is all-too-convenient for them, advantageous financially for Apple and DISADVANTAGEOUS for their customers, and I find the claims disingenuous. It's not a push towards some "truly wireless future" it's a push towards the bottom of your wallet by Apple's fingers, in case there's some last bit of wadded up cash tucked away at the bottom.
Apple used to just make great products and act as if they cared about their customers. That was Old Apple. New Apple just wants to solve one problem, and that problem is this: there's money out there they don't have yet. And I won't subsidize that.
This decision to rip the training wheels off the bikes of people who bought their latest and NOT-greatest, defective-by-design/missing-its-required, mandatory-headphone-jack iPhones (all since 7 but the SE,) in the future will hopefully end up costing Apple a lot of formerly loyal customers. Apple needs to learn that loyalty goes both ways, and if they're not loyal to their loyal customers, their customers will go somewhere else.
I have already resolved not to buy anything that is either largely, or principally an audio-device that is missing its headphone jack, which includes any Computer, or any iOS device.
(As an aside on why I REQUIRE a headphone jack: I have tried several sets of Bluetooth headphones, including BeatsX and NONE of them have ever measured up to my wired headphones when it really counts, and that's the ability to PLAY continuously. The sound is admittedly pretty good on the BeatsX, though they are uncomfortable after a while... (maybe THAT'S how they figured they could get away with that weak-sauce battery life spec., by making them so no one would WANT to wear them after an hour or two). I have fairly standard-sized ears, and most earbuds' standard silicone tips fit me fine and very comfortably, but the BeatsX comes with three pairs of tips, one pair each in three different sizes; one that's way too small, one that's ever-so-slightly-too-big, and one that is entirely too large. BUT besides being WAY too expensive, (mine came free with something, which is the only reason I have them,) they FAIL compared even to my cheap but comfy Sony earbuds that I normally wear, or the Sennheiser ones I sometimes use, which is that the batteries on my wired Sony (or Sennheiser) headphones have NEVER gone dead, NEVER. NEVER. EV. ER. Because they don't HAVE any. Sure, my PHONE'S battery might die, but the HEADPHONES never have, and I've been using them for YEARS. Also the BeatsX cost about 6 times as much, and did I mention they're a little uncomfortable? It's FAR too high a price to pay for negligibly better sound. All other BT headphones I've ever tried SUCKED. I am happy with my wired headphones, the batteries NEVER die on any of them, and they last for years, and are not hugely overpriced with what seems like a 100% markup like Apple has, I think to support their crack-cocaine habits, or whatever. In any case, I would not buy them for any real, actual money, and don't appreciate Apple's attempts to try to oblige me to do so.)
So yeah, I'm railing against this decision that doesn't actually impact me in any way, shape or form whatever. I just hope that a lot of Apple's other customers decide to straighten their backs and throw the Apple iVampires slowly sucking the blood out of them OFF.
The more Apple tightens its fist around its users, the more users will SLIP through its fingers.
It has been nearly two years since Apple released the iPhone 7 without a headphone jack, forcing users who still use wired headphones to plug them into the Lightning connector using an adapter included in the box.
Apple also includes the adapter in the box with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, but more evidence has emerged today that suggests that trend will soon end.
Cirrus Logic, a supplier for the adapter, has apparently "confirmed" that the dongle won't be bundled with Apple's widely rumored trio of new iPhones expected next month, according to a Barclays research note.
Barclays already
anticipated this would be the case earlier this year.
"Reported a beat but gave mixed guidance with revenue below but earnings ahead. Cirrus didn't update its FY19 guide... but they did finally confirm the dongle loss, adding more support for our below estimates," the research note reads.
Apple routinely says it is pushing towards a "truly wireless future," and the headphone jack adapter has always been a stopgap amid that transition, so if Apple chooses not to include it in the box, it shouldn't really come as a surprise. Rumors suggest new iPads will also
lose the headphone jack and adapter.
Not everyone prefers wireless headphones, like AirPods, however, so if true, the removal of the adapter will almost certainly generate some controversy.
Apple will likely continue to
sell the adapter as a standalone accessory for $9, which is cheap by its standards, so customers at least won't be forced to pay too much extra for the adapter if it is indeed removed from the box this year.
The adapter is also available at resellers such as Best Buy, where nearly two years later, it is the retailer's
second-best selling Apple product in terms of units, so an argument could be made that Apple is removing the adapter too soon.
In a little over a month, we should find out for sure.
