I think you're still confusing "truly secure" with "not targeted". Of course it's great that there aren't malware and viruses out in the wild for OS X (with the exception of the iWork trojan). It's why I happily use it as my main OS, and why even after cracking OS X two years in a row Charlie Miller still prefers OS X. See what he says here when asked what OS he prefers:

It explains what Charlie thinks of the NX bit and ASLR.

*LTD*: already read that article. Let's hope it is indeed there completely utilized and is effective. I would love both security by obscurity as well as truly secured in SL10.6. I'm definitely upgrading.

Agreed!

I'm actually beginning to appreciate the "obscurity" part, if there's any truth to the security-via-obscurity argument. I can't tell the difference anymore.

OT: why is page 13 of this thread redirecting to page 12?

There's nothing wrong with having both; do you want to be the guy with the bullet proof jacket taking the bullet, or do you want to be the guy hiding behind the brick wall with a bullet proof jacket?

I just don't want to be the guy hiding behind the brick wall with no bullet proof jacket. :D

I think that happens when there is one post on page 13, and the moderators delete a post. Page 13 remains, but there are only 12 pages of posts. Click on 13, get 12.

It will clear up as soon as posts get added and page 13 has some posts.

Ah ok, thanks. Problem solved, anyway. ;)

Celtic:

When this happens with iTunes, open the security log and the console log, and let us know what it says. I believe the console log will actually give the you a name.

Secure.log:

Is the com.alf in Secure.log the thing you're looking for?

Either way, I made a separate thread here. Appreciate any help.

IT departments the world over depend on Windows being broken or near-broken.

Truth. It's funny (sad?) to listen to IT folks bash Macs (ignorantly, as most have zero hands-on experience with the platform) and defend Microsoft tooth and nail while they run around all day purging viruses and dealing with hardware driver issues. If I had to do that for a living, I'd hate Microsoft with a passion. Heck, I'm just a Windows end user and I hate Microsoft with a passion.

Yet these tools just keep taking the abuse with a big smile on their faces. "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Must be the paycheck.

Third option, I'll be the guy hiding behind the brick wall with a bulletproof jacket and... in a tank!

:D

Sorry, I just had to. Good post but I read an article on spamming in the paper today suggesting that one should send the Bible in reply to any spam... Thus making them think twice.

It would be great to have a little active defense though.

All's I said was "more secure" rather than "truly" so, but I'm definitely not defending OS X security beyond what I think is reasonable grounds & I do take your point about said vulnerabilities.

Yes, interesting to read what C Miller thinks & he does state that he never got so far as having "root/admin access". Still, it seems OS X is not as secure as I previously thought. At least Snow Leopard will hopefully improve matters on the ASLR side.

Being objective here, if one Googles "OS X security better than Vista", one in fact finds an overwhelming amount of articles claiming the very opposite: ie. Vista's security being better than OS X. I guess it has to be due to previously discussed points about being targeted more. :) Interesting though, to say the least, & I certainly intend to be more open-minded about OS X security issues in future.

As much as I'd like to run OS X we can't.

its still just windows:

- no multiple desktops (you have to search for third-party software which does not work very well)

- no software included, beside the Bloat- and Crapware of the computer vendor

- no freedom at all, multiple install of the final release on all machines at home? No!

- no package management

Its not awesome, its Windows! I still don't get the point, why such a lot of people are celebrating such an Hype around this operating system

It goes back to my bullet proof vest analogy (though perhaps I should have chosen something less violent): Vista is technically more secure but is attacked more directly (guy with the vest directly getting shot at).

I'd still rather be the dude out of sight without the vest, not even getting shot at.

SL really looks to be fixing this, since it'll supposedly be running full implementations of NX and ASLR, and will be running a 64-bit kernel.

It'll be the dude out of site, not getting shot at, wearing the bullet proof vest. And a helmet. :D

Because it might actually suck somewhat less this time. I mean, MS' last decent OS was XP. And that aint saying much, LOL.

Windows 7 seems to actually approach OS X in some ways.

You're tempting a wall of text battle. Is there a reason behind that?

I'd be on OS X right now if it allowed me to visit secure pages on this network connection. Thankfully I have Windows installed.

The back to school promotion is coming up. It'll be a good time to see more education users. Sadly Apple doesn't throw us lowly retail users a bone more often. I'm not even going to try to get into how much trouble my department had just to get some value added to our Apple purchases from our representatives.

There are many legitimate reasons to despise Microsoft. But their assimilation of Bungie (and killing their stellar Mac gaming development) may be one of my personal biggest.

Yeah, because Bungie had nothing to do with their own "selling out." Microsoft forced them at gunpoint to make Halo for Xbox. Come on -- Microsoft made an offer -- who took it??? And why did they take it?

LagunaSol, you really need help with your anger issues towards Microsoft :(. I remember 10 years ago when Apple tried to reinstate gaming on the Mac with Halo. After Bungie took the obvious route in terms of exposure, the Mac gaming initiative just curled up and died after one attempt, never to be seen again.

Why would there be a wall of text battle over Windows?

Why do people argue whether Windows 7 will be good or not? Who cares? If you use Windows, good for you, you may like Windows 7. Or you might not. Whatever. I will never install it on any of my machines, so I don't care if it will be awesome or not.

Also, sorry to say Windows 7 is a modified Vista. That's not a bad thing entirely, backwards compatibility is something Microsoft have to conform to at some basic level to maintain their dominance. You can't blame them for that. But on the other hand, don't be naive and believe that Windows 7 isn't just Vista with bells and whistles 'cos guess what kiddies?

It is.

I have a little more faith in the Unix/Open source community.

No, it isn't. "Bells and whistles" isn't the same as listening to what your customers (and non-customers) didn't like about Vista and addressing those issues.

Microsoft have taken care of most all of the annoyances, and made some real improvements in usability, productivity, and user-friendliness.

Yes, I love "kernel version Hell" too.

You forgot value, responsiveness, scent, innovation, appearance, security, earth-awareness, flavor, civic responsibility, performance, stability, chewiness, and sheen.

If you're going to effuse, why hold back? :p

Apparently you can't have anything to do with Windows if you're a Mac user. It's impossible.

Why is someone a newbie Windows troll judged by their join date, paid by Microsoft to post here, or missed their way to the Windows SuperSite?

Am I missing something here?

Windows 7 seems to actually mimic OS X in some ways.

Fixed ;)

And please read up on something you chose to ignore:

ASLR
NX

Again, I'm anything but a Windows fanboy; I pretty much use all 3 major OSes and love my MBP. But it's absolutely crucial that Apple implement these pieces for SL 10.6 in order to compete with MS on the security level.

What info about implementation in Snow Leopard do we have for these items/issues? I hope Apple isn't relying on lack of a threat to continue their impervious ideals.

Um, perhaps the name of this site? You know, MacRumors?

Seems an odd place to consistently bash Apple and praise Microsoft. But maybe that's just me.

*yawns*

Still 98 with a fancy theme if you ask me.

It's 2009 and yet there is still no equivalent to 'cp -u' in Windows.. the most basic of computing tasks. This fact alone boggles my mind, let alone everything else it lacks compared to modern Linux / OS X operating systems.

I don't see what all the fuss is about myself.

It will be no more than a gaming OS to me, if I want to get any real work done, I'll use Linux or OS X.
