It's not possible to be critical of Apple then?

Of course. I have plenty of gripes about Apple. But there is a group here (growing more numerous and vocal as of late) that posts nothing but anti-Apple diatribes while praising its competition. Aiden Shaw falls squarely into this category. Refuting their FUD makes us appear to be unequivocal apologists or (insert appropriate description (kool-aid drinkers, cultists, whatever) here), which is not the case.

I say great - use what you like. Does Windows 7 put a warm fuzzy in your bloomers? Fantastic! Compute long and prosper. But quit trolling forums dedicated to a company to which you have an avowed dislike when you have nothing to contribute but snark for the company and its customers.

It's quite pitiful, really. And frankly, I question the motivation.

It's 2009 and yet there is still no equivalent to 'cp -u' in Windows.. the most basic of computing tasks. This fact alone boggles my mind, let alone everything else it lacks compared to modern Linux / OS X operating systems.
.

What exactly does that do?

And dont forget the ever touted major weakness of OSX: no cut in finder (or w/e), THE HORROR!:p

Sadly, I'm a Mac user that's been forced by The Man to use Windows since 1993. Doesn't mean I have to like it...

Then GET A NEW JOB!!!!!

If Windows is THAT much torment to you, then you should really apply yourself to seek out a place of work where your ENTIRE LIFE will not be consumed by your hatred of it.

You're sad. :(:(

Code:
-u, --update
copy only when the SOURCE file is newer than the destination
file or when the destination file is missing

This happens to be a really bad example as the option doesn't exist in OS X :D

*yawns*

Still 98 with a fancy theme if you ask me.
I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not. Please show me how Finder in 10.0 and now in 10.5 are so alien from each other.

Hard Mode: Without using anything that needs Quartz Extreme or Core Image.

Explorer is still Explorer but even OS X is relying on graphical fluff just like Vista and 7 are leveraging now. Windows Search still needs some work but it's much more intelligent and offers suggestions. Leopard's Spotlight search is a pain to use over Tiger's.

man page time sir. I can understand why they'd want that feature. It's a bit hard with you're splitting hairs over flags though.

Seriously! I don't troll the Windows fanboy forums...I don't even know any of them really, except for maybe Winsupersite.

At my technical school this year there were literally HORDES of immature teenage MS fanboys. I was MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS...not saying anything to anyone and they notice I had my computer's wallpaper set to the default Mac OS X "Aurora" background. For the rest of the year it was, "Mac kid," "Mac ******", "Apple fanboy" along with asinine comments like, "People buy Macs just to look cool", "Mac sucks dick, get a real computer you sheep," "I bet Mac Kid wants Steve Jobs to **** him in the ass", etc.

That's not very nice of them.

Eidorian, do you think Windows 7 could very well be the death of Apple's Operating Systems ?

You've pretty much asked me this before.

No

I do feel that Apple is in a holding pattern right now though. It's a big mess of reasons for me.

Snow Leopard doesn't look all the enticing of an upgrade either.

And making it an even worse example is the fact that if a Windows user installs cygwin they user can use "cp" with "-u" option.

I really can't because of my limited knowledge.

I think OS X without the aqua interface will look like NextStep... which i think it's way ahead of the classic windows 98 theme.

That doesn't really answer my question though.

Take a little more time when comparing Windows 7 to Windows 98. Even if you drop down to the Classic theme in 7.

Yep, I've heard plenty of this too. Go play a cross-platform online game (preferably a shooter) and tell everyone you're on a Mac. You'll be in for quite a verbal treat.

Yet Mac users are the smug jerks.

Aiden Shaw is a long time member of this forum and has contributed a significant number of informative and sometimes provocative posts.

I, for one, appreciate a little diversity among the discussions here. It would be very dull to just read "Good Job, Apple" over and over again.

Windows 7 and the fact that is runs well on a diverse selection of interesting hardware is going to be formidable competition for Apple in the near future. I hope that Apple responds by creating more compelling future products and continues to innovate and improve OS X.

And if each thread didn't have to devolve into an anti-troll defensive maneuver, we (i.e. those of us who use Apple stuff, choose to use Apple stuff, and enjoy using Apple stuff) could have some real, substantive debate about what Apple is doing wrong and what they're doing right.

What happens if we meet all those criteria but are still critical of Apple given their competition?

Please!
Very rarely do these threads "devolve" as you say. More often than not, the discussions are loaded with Apple content and users opinions on what works and what doesn't.

It's just not necessary that every poster rave about how great Apple is, to have a valid user opinion.

Who says you can't be? I certainly am. It's hard to vocalize your Apple gripes when someone is constantly kvetching about you being a Starbucks-swilling hipster tool.

Wrong.

5th comment in this thread:

"One data point, and the fanbois have a collective orgasm!"

Yep, Aiden Shaw.

Now tell me that's not an instant detour to a downhill course.

There's dissent, there's healthy debate, and there's trolling. I'm surprised you can't recognize the difference.

I'm sure it's just as easy when you're being called a Microsoft troll.

Wrong.

I read the same post and there's quite a bit more to it than that.

Oh please. Who in the world implied this?

Maybe I misinterpreted your post but I believe that you implied this with this underlined quote

i.e. those of us who use Apple stuff, choose to use Apple stuff, and enjoy using Apple stuff) could have some real, substantive debate

Doesn't this imply that the only people who should be able to participate in the debate are people who "Use, choose, and enjoy Apple Stuff" and that everyone else can not contribute any substantive comment.

Weren't you the one who attacked Aiden Shaw for being "MacRumors own Microsoft Banner Ad"?

In all of the time that I have participated on this forum, I have never read a post from Aiden which stooped to name calling and flaming.

I implied that a user must rave about the greatness of Apple to have a valid opinion???

I think you've been reading too many legal briefs... :p
