This graph represents what I see at my school too. I know many people switching to Macs or thinking about switching. The only thing holding them back is the price. If Apple can give more value for the money, they will gain marketshare for sure.

Also, it is a very wise move to sell to the education market. Students are the professionals of tomorrow. There's not really much use in pursuing the stubborn, about-to-retire baby boomers anymore.

To the poster that said that UVa is one of the top schools and thus is more likely to have a lot of Macs, while that's probably true, this trend is holding up in less well-off schools too. I went to University of Central Florida, and a community college here before that, and in both, I saw a distinct upswing in Macs from when I started to when I left, as well as growth from when my brother attended both of the same schools. It's not as much as the picture a few posts up (I think that's UC Berkeley? I didn't spell that right) but there were a lot of Macs still, probably 1/3 of the computers in the room in all of my classes. They were mostly humanities and nonprofit classes, as well as some digital media (where you expect to see a lot more Macs). I think it's safe to say this trend, while slightly exaggerated at UVa, is fairly universal, at least in the US.

"The data add to a number"

I know, English is so confusing. Singular nouns have plural verbs and vice versa.

But, singular is datum and plural is data. All of you who took Latin in high school know that.

Now, here’s a question. With Windows 7 just around the corner, could Microsoft start to claw back lost market from Apple?

Uh-huh. Riiiight. We've been hearing "Apple is going to have serious problems when Windows (insert version here) comes out." Heard it for Vista, and XP, and . . . well that's about it. MS can't even get two decent operating systems out the door in nearly nine years. Maybe NEXT_VERSION will do it. All the Vista testers were falling all over themselves praising it to the skies during the betas and somehow, mysteriously, it garnered Windows ME status right quick. I suppose Stockholm syndrome-suffering Windows testers have a tendency to take their brains out of their head and put it on the table when doing their testing.

Wait until Windows 7 hits the shelves, and maybe this time Apple will have serious problems. You know, like the kind MS has had . . . seeing its market share plunge from 96%+ to 88.9% in less than three years; its browser share tank; it's stock value eroding steadily, etc. It still sells a lot "stuff" though, that runs on other cheap "stuff", if that's any consolation.

Come back 6-10 months after Windows 7 hits the shelves and THEN tell us about who has problems. Knowing MS they'll find some way to half-ass this release too. Imagine that . . . XP still not dead well into Windows 7's release. LOL!

Um...Vista did suck but XP was decent. I've tried Windows 7 and I can see potential where it can take away from Apple among general users. I'm anxious to see Snow Leopard to see what Apple has up their sleeve

You should see the stats for USC (Los Angeles, CA). It's 50% Mac overall, and 100% mac in the film school. :apple:

Yes - expect a huge bump in MS market share when Windows 7 ships.

Then show us the stats - otherwise we'll think that you're just passing gas.... Where are the links to back up those claims?

This is huge...

I don't want to make too big a deal about this, but research has shown that college is where a lot of people make their lifelong decision in the whole Mac/PC thing. People switch, to be sure, but college is when computers are put to the first test in peoples careers and if they past test, a trend will become a lifestyle.

Anecdotally, this is what happened for me. I did all my undergraduate work on a Mac, and in the ten years since, I've bought four Macs.

It will interesting to see how this plays out. As these kids graduate and rise up through their corporations we should see that Mac market share shift faster and faster.

Mac knows this and so does M$.

I doubt it. How many times is Microsoft going to get to say, "Okay, I think we have it figured out this time...wait....what was that?"

As people realize that the "Laptop Hunter" ads from Microsoft point out the poor value of Apples, this will slide too.

I really can't believe you said that.

If by "point out the poor value of Apples" you mean, "dredge up and flog the dead 'Macs are more expensive than some PCs' horse," then you're right.

Otherwise, that sounded like shilling for Microsoft. What's that about fanboys, you say?

Yes - expect a huge bump in MS market share when Windows 7 ships.

Standard Oil doesn't need any more market share. They have too much already.

No properly-documented statistics are readily available online, otherwise MacRumors would already be on top of it. If you wish to verify my claim, please visit the USC campus.

I'm sorry that you think that it's a "horse".

Apple fanbois think that the laptop hunter ads are EPIC FAIL because any Windows laptop in the ads is woefully lacking compared to an Apple laptop for twice the price.

What part of twice the price don't you understand?

Why should I fly to the University of South Carolina to verify your claim?

I think that the burden of proof is on you, to convince us of your claims.

*facepalm*

WE KNOW ALL ABOUT "TWICE THE PRICE." The MS ads are INDEED epic fail because they are missing the point! EVERYBODY ALREADY KNOWS THAT MACS COST MORE. The point is, NOBODY CARES that Macs are twice the price! Microsoft runs these idiotic "Macs are more expensive" ads acting as though they've stumbled upon a revelation straight from the f**king heavens. OMFG! Microsoft wants people to know that Best Buy sells PCs for $600! Apple is done! Going out of business forever! It's the end for Apple!

Surely you don't really, truly believe in your heart of hearts that people who purchase or plan to purchase Macs don't already know this?

Everyone that I know shops for computers at Wal-mart - where they don't have to worry about idiotic Apples.

No. Win7 is targeting 1 GiB netbooks as a mainstream system.

Funny, one of my classmates came with one of the oldest laptops I've ever seen. It only had about a little over 512MB of ram, and a graphics card as old as the laptop.

He said
"As you can see I'm currently running a beta of Windows 7 that was released recently, it runs fluently, and smoothly. I've not next to no problems when booting my old laptop using this operating system. If it were Vista, my laptop would be burned to a crisp. Also i did not have to reinstall any of my drivers for the devices or programs that I had."

Before I had my laptop, I was given the choice of picking either XP or Vista in 2007. I went for XP because of all the rumors of how annoying vista was. I got to test drive vista myself on a friend's pc. And I was annoyed with vista because of the 50 questions I was being asked all the time.

Being that I got a nice live demonstration of the windows 7 beta, as long as it doesn't annoy me or as long as it's compatible with everything else in my system, I'll be more than happy to upgrade and enjoy all of the neat customizations I can use =)

My question is will Windows 7 be the same memory hog as Vista?

No...or at least not the betas. I have Win7 in a virtual machine and it does fine on 2 GB, which is barely adequate for Vista. Only problem is that my computer has a dinky video card with only 128 MB of vRAM...so that leaves just 64 MB for the Aero theme. Not good...

XBox 360 didn't make it, Vista didn't make it, Winblows tablets didn't make it, the Zune didn't make it...just like WMD in Iraq, we're still waiting for them to appear...and Windows 7 is gonna be just that...a forethought for those playing with their new iPhones and Grand Central-powered Snow Leopard.

MS IS DEAD.

are you really serious? as much as i prefer the mac to windows, i am not ignorant enough to actually believe that MS is dead. and the 360 has not only "made it" but greatly surpassed Sony in both console sales and attach-rate for games.

you need to study some facts and not just propaganda.
