I just noticed yesterday that Apple Retail employees are using new EasyPays for for checkout/scheduling (I worked there for 4 years, so I'm a nerd and notice these things.). The new models have NFC on them. I doubt Apple would go to the trouble of updating/replacing their fleet of checkout devices just to accept payment from competitors' devices. The new iPhone will have NFC.
I noticed the same thing a few weeks ago. If I'm not mistaken, the new EasyPays were running on iPhone 5s models instead of the old pre-Retina iPod touch units that the old EasyPays were running.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple began touting Touch ID's enterprise security. Maybe a year from now, employees would have the option (or requirement) to log into their employee AppleConnect account using their fingerprint.

ugly bezels

The difference between 4" and 4.7" is minimal… if Apple would reduce all their ugly bezels.

So true.... so mUCH wasted space.. it could even be used for a small LCD giving info or dedicated to the phone App.

If they using cases with NFC, this just disprove the theory next iPhone has NFC.
If you are releasing a device with a feature you need next month, why pay 100s per device when you can keep using non-broken device for a month?
Besides, NFC credit cards is everywhere (so as the vulnerability of using technology designed for identification only), getting NFC EasyPays will reduce the time to buy accessories with credit card. (Although using the Store app will be faster. )
P.S. Betting body parts is illegal in the place I live.

How does NFC factor in with the new Chip and Pin/Chip and Signature mandate coming into effect in 2015? Will it still work after the chip and pin roll out?

Your knowledge & confidence makes me happy, can't wait.

If and when the iPhone gets NFC capabilities, it will be huge. Not because it'll be the first, it won't be, but because it'll boost the install-base of devices supporting NFC that venders and stations will really operate to include the tech moving forward.

This all day long. Just because NFC is an old failure (in USA) doesn't mean Apple can't make it ubiquitous overnight.

Yet iBeacon isn't anywhere yet. Except for an Apple store I have yet to see it. Although I see NFC all over and starting next year it's mandatory for all POS

+1. I keep going to more and more large retailers (Macys, etc) and am noticing new checkout/CC machines...often with a Google Wallet logo on them. I'd be quite surprised if Apple doesn't want to disrupt that.

Does anyone really care about NFC?

If Apple starts promoting it, you can bet that everyone will. Between the credit cards on iTunes accounts, the new iCloud Keychain CC entry by taking photos in the new Safari on iOS 8, Touch ID being opened up to 3rd parties, and Tim Cook himself saying that mobile payments were one of the reasons considered behind Touch ID (as close to a confirmation we would get) I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't implement NFC and start mobile payments. It seems like such an obvious choice!!

The Apple smartwatch - whatever it will be called. I believe that is the device that should house NFC for payments. I think it makes the most sense.

Though I suppose you could put NFC in both devices so those who choose not to purchase the watch would still be able to pay via whatever payment system Apple implements.

I hope not! Then I'd just have to buy an iWatch!

Depends who you ask. Ask any musician or video editor or graphic designer and they know and probably own at least one firewire and thunderbolt device. It didn't catch on with consumers the way USB did but it did catch on with professionals.

NFC in the U.S. is similar. No one that I know even knows what NFC is here but in Canada and Europe and Asia, it's becoming very prevalent. Because Android is so fragmented, the only company left to open up the full potential of NFC in the U.S. is probably Apple.

Ok, now ask how many of those professionals use USB more often…...

Or rather use USB for their work. Using USB keyboards & mouses don't count.

Of course keyboard and mice count. How ridiculous.
The point is Apple did not manage to drive adoption with it. There are just as many, in fact probably more of those ‘professionals’ in the Windows world that have never touched Firewire or TB.

Agree...I expect standing ovation from the apple faithful when they announce it

I hope they include it to cross it off the feature check list

I'm a video/graphic artists professional and I use USB more but I'll always go out of my way to use firewire or thunderbolt if I have the choice. At work, i always have the choice so I always use the pro solutions. At home or at other people's I sometimes have the choice so I sometimes get to use the better alternative.

No one is arguing against USB being more ubiquitous just like no one would argue there are more Macs and iPhones in use than PCs and Android phones. But when speed and quality trump costs, we all know who wins.

Your the best! Wrong, but still the best!!

Could the chip be for wireless charging? Would love it, but how would the signal get through the back?

At least you can say he's consistent, if nothing else. lol I do think we'll have to give him some kind of sedative or strong drink when Apple announces the larger phone though. It's going to be a tough day on the boards for him.

Not really, USB keyboards/mice/webcams don't care if its usb 1.1 much less 3.0. Speed and flexibility are the 2 reasons for the current generations of Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 - that comes down to data transfer and HD or UltraHD video devices and video cards..

USB does well with data transfer one way, but you're getting into PCIe when you talk video cards and Thunderbolt IS PCIe on a cable.. Which can do data transfer both ways at the same time for sync'd video and audio AND has direct bus resource access... Which is important not just for video pros but gaming too.

TB would be awesome for consumers who want to upgrade that older laptop with a newer video card or a newer buss card like the next USB 3.1 or whatever.. That won't happen until they lower TB licensing and get to the final version of TB that supports 100GB (right now they are only to 20GB data transfer with TB2) - They, Intel, has a 100GB version in the labs.. any number of reasons it's not been released though..

Greed most likely, they want to iterate us to death with upgrades.

This confuses me. A company like Apple doesn't need to wait for technologies to gain traction to adopt it if it itself sees use cases that don't rely on others.

As for "why now", NFC isn't just a chip, but also needs pretty big (but flat) antenna as well. Since it wasn't in the iPhone 5, it was unlikely to ever be in the iPhone 5s since it most definitely would have required a case redesign.

good call. i dont think people understand that every single piece of an iPhone is measured EXACTLY. even the addition of one more "chip" sometimes cannot fit because of space or size of board or other reasonings

Agreed. Just hope whatever they've come up with is 100% SECURE.

they're pretty good at making things secure!

In the UK, you're limited to a £15 spend by waving your card.

I think, I've never used it, I have a NFC credit card and the only place I see that advertise they accept it is McDonalds. I'm sure other places do, but they don't advertise it. I've never been asked if i'd like to NFC it when presenting a card for a small payment.

Whether tat will change if Apple adopt it, I don't know. I use the Starbucks passbook a lot though.
