question: If I bought software that is universal for my iPhone. do I have to buy it again when I buy an iPad?

So far it seems as if you want the HD version for the ipad you will have to pay. But one app Implode! by UGO had an update to XL for free. Seems to me that the XL apps are updated iPhone apps and HD is a totally new application made only for the iPad.

There's no such rule.

Get your facts straight.

You cannot run 2 apps at the same time. If you want to restrict the definition of multitasking to backround tasks only, fine, but as a whole, the device is not a fully multitasking device and it runs iPhone OS, not MacOS X, so I am in fact correct.

If you want to tout the iPad's ability to run backround tasks, that's fine too, but it's not the same as having 2 apps running at the same time or the ability to switch from one apps' window to another without closing the app.
So yes, the lack of full multitasking is a limitation for this device.

With a 1Ghz processor, I think it's sad that this device does less than a 450Mhz Sawtooth PowerMac G4 which fullly multitasks.

Actually, you are wrong! You can play iPod music, receive email, iCal updates, Push Notifications, contact updates. etc. while surfing the web. Each one of those involves at least 1 task... and they run concurrently.

What Apple does not [currently] allow is multiple 3rd-party apps to run concurrently.

BINGO! Yes, and ultimately, the majority of apps for this device will be non-Apple apps, so except for Apple's exceptions and and Apple's backround tasks, this device is not fully multitasking despite the fanboy apologist claims to the contrary.

I'm not trying to slam the device, I'm even interested in trying one, but I'm waiting for Revision B or C because of the current limitations and lack of ability to fully surf the web. I find it ironic that Apple is touting this device as the perfect mobile websurfing device when more than half of the websites most people go to use FLASH and this device is not compatible.

Comparing clock frequencies is a dumb way to determine the relative performance of two chips that use different instruction set architectures and different microarchitectures.

Whatever

I'm not buying another device from a company that forces me to log out to change video cards.:p

Agreed!

But, he's got a point . . . only that a PowerMac G4 sawtooth is almost 8+ years old and it multitasked without a hitch. Not to mention can still run a full blown Mac OSX Tiger install (albeit with Dashboard turned off).

I love this thing!!

Just started playing with the iPad. I am stunned. It is fabulous. The iPad apps in general are great. Typing is actually pretty easy. Much easier than the iPhone.

Stunningly great. Do not hesitate to go out and get one.

I have a lot of tech and am rarely stunned by new tech these day but this iPad is a jaw dropper.

Hope you all have deep wallets!!!!!!

What kinda goofball logic is that? Is music at the iTunes Store any cheaper when purchased on a (more expensive) Mac Pro? Pluswhich, there are a ton of cool apps for free (and/or dirt cheap) available.

Try putting a little more thought into it next time, to hopefully avoid any future embarrassingly flawed posts.

I am loving mine. 95% satisfied. I have extra large hands and typing is going to be a bit of a problem for me. I sure plan to use a blue tooth for any big projects. Hope someone makes a flexible keyboard that is easy to carry. On the other hand it is much better than my iPhone for me and I am happy as a pig in mud. However I miss the stocks, weather and mostly where is the clock stuff. I use all the timers on my iPhone. I have searched the app store but have not found any 3rd party clocks. Please someone tell me there is one somewhere? With that I would be 100% satisfied. My 3G model is on order and the wife gets this one.

It's not a hardware problem, but Apple problem. Apple Has A very strict and clear roadmap for OS and this is what they do, they implement things on one-at-a-time basis. Well at least it works. Fingers crossed for 4.0.

Can you multitask?

This is no good. It means one may have to pay AT&T 2X$70/month to surf internet with both iPhone and iPad. I don not understand why Jobs disallow this. If he is afraid of hurting AT%T business, the user already paid AT&T with the iPhone service.

So you haven't been reading what *actual* users are saying about it...

Where did this replacement idea come from? Did you replace your oven when you bought your new toaster? For the love of Stewie, this does not replace your computer unless every app you have is available in iPad format, and you like working on a smaller screen, and... Maybe that's one half of 1% of users, maybe less.

I don't know man, read these forums again, a bunch of people are saying how they haven't used there desktop/laptop all day and have no use for it anymore. Don't kid yourself, it's meant to replace a computer for the vast majority of people who only consume content/do light internet browsing. Most people don't render 3D graphics too often :p. That's why is seems foolish that Apple left off Flash, but maybe I'm just not forward thinking enough. ;)

Hooray, I found the clock on the iTunes store for $0.99. Now I am 100% happy with my iPad. 12 clock on Clock Pro. Yippee

This is ridiculous. This could be done easily by software (as it can be done when jailbreaking the iPhone). But as often when dealing with Apple: learn to make some compromises (and pay the bill).

One can always argue about the sense of an iPad. Some do need one, others don't, that's fine with me. But this is just a political decision, which is a shame...

Sorry to DISTURB everyone's bitching about MULTITASKING... buy if you not heard of iPhone OS 4 you have been seriously out of the loop. Multi-tasking, single INBOX (multiple mail accounts), and other features are coming free of charge to iPad and probably to iPhone 3G/3GS as well.

APPLE is not perfect, by far, but it does produce quality products and releases them in a timely fashion. And remember that the APP developers are not APPLE, you cannot blame APPLE for this or that APP charging for HD/iPad versions.

I don't have my iPad yet (it has been delivered to my brother), but I have already received six FREE upgrades to apps that have been updated for iPad (including free apps, like Evernote, and paid apps, like ZAGAT).

The thing is that you don't have to convince me that I'll hate the iPad. By now, I know better. I've had my iPhone for almost 4 years now. I know what I like and how it works.

Go ahead spend all your energy trying to slam it, I'll skip over your post after the first couple of words. I only want to hear from people that have it and can give me an honest appraisal.
