You have no clue what you're talking about. OS X is inherently multi-tasking, and that's what the iPad is running. At any given time there are a number of processes (OS services) running simultaneously. The fact that Apple is currently allowing only one third-party app at a time to run is basically irrelevant; the iPad is still multitasking at all times. If I shut down all the apps on my Mac except for Safari, that doesn't make the computer stop multitasking, and in fact having many apps running at once doesn't make Safari any slower, either (unless I have high-priority apps running full-out 200% CPU or something).

--Eric

Sorry, WRONG, it's running iPhone OS, a derivative version of OSX and it is NOT multitasking. Certain backround tasks are happening like PUSH notifications, but at no time are 2 programs running at the same time such that you can switch back and forth to cut/paste info from one app to another or switch windows from one program to another.

Not odd at all, simple answer, Why beat a dead horse?
But since you asked, I'll recap...
Still doesn't have:

Full web access to most popular websites (NO FLASH)
multitasking
camera
a real operating system like a netbook
Office
iPAD specific apps (very few so far at least)

That's why I'm waiting, in a nutshell. Version 1 lacks too many features I want and doesn't replace anything I already own. Very simple.

It does appear to be an amazing device, but I'm waiting for Revision B or C.

Thanks - refreshing to see someone state their opinion without blasting others for theirs. I hope the next revisions will have what you feel you need - I do feel that this product should evolve quite well and thus maybe at some time serve you better. If not, I am sure other similar products will follow - this is an exciting time for computing technology.

It doesn't charge when plugged into a PC/Mac.. WTF!

I was wondering when someone was going to bring this up. I've only found this mentioned in one other online article. Apparently the iPad is picky about what USB ports it will charge from.

Apple states that the iPad is designed for 10V USB ports. Mine will not charge when plugged into my 1,1 Mac Pro, but it does charge when plugged into my unibody MacBook pro. From what I understand many PC USB ports will not charge it either. This is going to become a sore point for many early adopters when they find they have to plug it into the wall charger to charge it instead of just leaving it connected to the host computer.

I'm wondering if I get one of USB "pigtails" that plugs into two ports and splice it to a dock connector if that would do the trick?

i thought most people prefer to charge there ipods and iphone ( and ipads now) from a wall socket rather than a computer

Wow, wrong and rude.

How do you think the iPod continues to play music when you exit it? How do you think iTunes continues to download that TV show while you browse the web? Clock timer? All multitasking.

I believe the primary complaint regarding the need to use iTunes is that it limits piracy. Now, I don't like being limited in loading legitimate media that belongs to me onto my devices any more than the rest of u geeks, but to complain about a product and then also complain about the company trying to keep the product profitable by controlling some of the content is just foolish. How is Apple to pay for the R/D on all these devices if they cannot make money on the media end? The iPad would not even exist is it were not for the iTunes Store. One did pay for the other.

What I want to say is that it doesn't matter where you get your media if you get it legally it costs you money, so iTunes or the iPad only sucks as much money as you let it. Any consumer device drags content cost behind it.

if you're in windows go to device manager and at the bottom is the USB ports tree. forgot the name. each one has a power tab. uncheck the box that says to turn off power to the device.

i do this in Windows 7. didn't see the option in OS X on my mac mini. not sure about previous versions of windows

Sorry, but it's you that doesn't know what the definition of multitasking is. You can try to redefine the definition to suit your needs but you would still be wrong. Andy Inhatko makes an excellent point on his blog here: http://ihnatko.com/

(Opps. Look like others have already pointed to his link)

Hater's need to leave.

I am testing Keynote right now to prepare a presentation for a major NBA team on Tuesday. Cost me $9.99 one time only fee and it's working great.

So I am accomplishing something, and I can do this over and over again, without any added fees. This is just one example.

I can use my $9 a month Netflix accounts to stream video into my iPad which I can easily connect to my TV -- No more hauling the fragile laptop to the basement.

The OP may not have meant it this way, but

** iPad = iTunes vending machine

is a positive attribute!

Why do people buy from vending machines... some reasons are: that they have what we want; they're easy to use; they're everywhere we are; they're convenient and they provide instant gratification.

Apple, Investors and Customers benefit from:

**iPad = iTunes vending machine

What's not to like?

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.17405/1114; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

Lol I had to wait to unbox it at our family picknick. Itunes isn't authorized on the laptop so I can't sync any apps I had downloaded.doohhh..

A real drawback! Two friends of mine (who would like to enter in the computer world, better late than never ;)) would have bought an iPad if it had worked without the need of another computer.

That would have been one of the more important differences to iPhone and iPod.

... a friend in need, is a friend in deed! (if his friend has a computer, with which to setup his iPad).

Get your facts straight.

I think the device s*cks. Now in order to KNOW that the device s*cks I have to test it in an Apple Store and wait for the excitement (And the buzz meticulously planned by Apple) to pass...

Then I'm pretty sure I'll be able to finaly conclude: There are stupid consumer in this world and intelligent ones. Thanks to the first, compagny can sell ******** with no effort put on innovations, price or options and thanks to the second they will have to upgrade, innovate and cut prices *Yay iPad second generation*

The one advantage over the ipad doc is that the regular Apple bluetooth pad is slim and will easily fit into a bag.

The question is if the Apple bluetooth keybord will work together with iPad. With the iPhone it doesn't. (What I regret.)

Yeah, I fast touch type.

Oh thanks again. Very valuable information first hand.

It's a little hard in portrait mode, the keys are closer than I'm used to. (auto correct pops up a lot, and when it's wrong, I need to spam the delete key and retype.)

Auto correct is almost not usable in German-language layout. I've switched it off on iPhone (almost everybody does that).

Landscape mode has just the right spacing for me. The iPad keyboard seems much more responsive than my G1 iPhone, and I can touch type at basically full speed. I put the iPad flat on the table in front of me, and just type like normal.

Good to know. I am very curious how it will feel. It would be very appreciated if I don't need to carry an additional keyboard.

They say it has stereo sound because it has two speakers

No. I believe that they call iPhone, iPod touch and iPad "Stereo" because only the headphones and AV output (via AV cable or dock) is stereophonic. The speakers never are. But it would be cool and you need at least FOUR speakers to be able listening stereo in all orientations.

i thought most people prefer to charge there ipods and iphone ( and ipads now) from a wall socket rather than a computer

Well it looks like I don't have any choice now, but it's nice to just keep a spare dock connector cable that I can plug into any USB to charge instead of buying an extra wall adapter(s).

That probably won't help. Many USB ports (especially on Windows PCs) only supply 5V, but the iPad requires 10V.

You have to leave the desk with one -- sit on the sofa with it -- to really grasp how it will begin to change lifestyles.

So much more enjoyable than a laptop/netbook.

It just changes the whole experience. I am hooked.

Going to have a hard time producing client content today -- I want to CONSUME it.

The YouTube iPad interface is beautiful:D

Mine's been on the truck for 5 hours! Arrgggh.

The real test is to type while in bed... It just doesn't work with a laptop/netbook or even a desktop on the nightstand.

... then there other things you can do with it while in bed: read a book, watch a move... or make some salsa :D

Yep...

I am agreeing with you. Apple is allowing media from other sources (i.e. netflix, amazon, etc.). I can load video and music that I have not bought from Apple (but have bought or created myself) onto my iPhone. As with most Apple products, they have decided that some level of content control is necessary to guarantee device performance and reliability. That level of control has not interfered with my ability to use any Apple device within the legal limits of the device. As I mentioned, I think some of those people that complain about iTunes requirements are those that want no limits on pirated material. BTW, Apple's control has left me with zero worms, viruses, etc over twenty tears of being an enduser.

Posting to an appropriate thread

I bought the iPad for a number of reasons.
# 1. I saw the iCal app in the intro vid, etc and thought that the iPad would do a great job of replacing a desk calendar.
# 2. I wanted something that would replace a real life notepad that I could later search through conveniently, etc.
# 3. Syncable Things on something other than the iPod Touch smallish keyboard.
# 4. Comic reading (I have a large level of dork left in me)
# 5. eBook reader but not one trick poney'd.
# 6. I was hoping for a Netflix app (EUREKA...) early within arrival of the iPad. That paid off.
# 7. Something more desk appropriate to do all of these things, AND still leave uses for my iPod Touch. I will continue to use that as a PDA on the go away from my desk when working. Easily done with MobileMe syncing.

Now, the reviews.
All of these work SPLENDIDLY. I've used the keyboard to make entries. Crisp, and darn near as quick to type on as my fingers will allow on a fullsized qwerty.
The screen shots of the Marvel Comics is in a word, fantastic. I like having the option of full page, or by scene viewing.
I downloaded a few free books thus far, including HDT's Walden. Crisp, smooth, not hard on the eyes.
I haven't watched Netflix movies yet, BUT the interface on the app is fantastic, and almost a mirror of the website.
Things is, well...THINGS but on the larger screen of the iPad so much easier to manage, etc.
iCal acts exactly as the videos displayed. intuitive, and very landscape friendly...like a digital version of a planner/organizer.
A few of the other apps that I've delved into thus far are Instapaper (Love having a larger screen to read on!), USA Today (Good, basic Safari like experience), Twitterific (better than the smaller IMHO), and a few others.

Figured I'd better post something other than my Eureka from earlier, otherwise being relegated to the complete status of full troll would abound. :) Been on this site for a while, I just don't often post (obviously). Overall, I'm extremely happy with the buy.

Well it is a lot faster to use than my PC, no waiting for virus checks and the like. Seriously though it is faster than I expected and I run an 8 Core MacPro so I do have a feel of speed, single or multitasking or not. I am using the iPad now and have been all day now, the thing rocks!

Interesting evaluation... by reading your posts, I wouldn't consider you a fan boy or a kool-aider... rather, a realist!

What?

It sucks in comparison to what? This entire product is innovation. Granted, it is gen 1, but it is new and there is nothing like it on the market. What about it lacks innovation? Before you produce a dream list of things you want, remember that doesn't mean the iPad lacks innovation, just the things you want in it. How is someone stupid for buying a gen 1 device for the things it can do now? No. Is it stupid to say it sucks for not doing things it wasn't promised to do? Maybe. It is not stupid or irrational to buy a device that does the tasks claimed by the maker and important to the purchaser.

I am happy with mine. It is neat to have another display next to my computer monitor, never had that luxury.

At 1.5lbs, holding it in my hands, as light as it is, gets to feel heavy after awhile. I need to find something that holds the iPad in landscape mode. Some cool apps like the aquarium app only work in portrait mode. I reckon I will have to find a small plate holder or something to hold it.

No serious complaints at this point.

One of my friends bought an iPad likewise today but cannot get any of his videos to import into the device, even ones purchased from iTunes. Apparently some are having the same issue however mine does not.
