Why no Multi-Touch Screen on new MBP?

Will someone please tell me why Apple won't do this? Why are they keeping the Multi-Touch strictly to the keypad?

Maybe they are trying keep the boutique special enough to buy. My understanding is that Apple execs have said no. Of course, apple has floated the ole' misinfo turd before.

Gold Medal for waiting goes to me!

I have had my 667 Mhz TiBook (a.k.a. Bessie) for six years now. It is the only computer I own. She reluctantly runs Adobe CS2 apps, but no two at the same time, and--with the OS stuck at Tiger--CS3 and a load of other apps are simply not available to me. I’m still inching along with USB1 and 802.11b. Computing for me seems something like the movie Groundhog Day, where I wake up each morning in 2002. I could of course dump more money than the machine itself is worth into upgrading the RAM and the OS, but that would only get me so far, and it would dip into my savings for a NEW MBP!

When the June MBP update turned out to be so disappointing, I put a new hard drive into ol’ Bessie here, so she’s stopped making the worst of her scary noises. She lives on for now…but for how long??

Quite frankly, since I’ve made it this far, I’m in it for the long haul: until a truly NEW MacBook Pro sees the light of day. Bessie’s replacement needs to have the maximum of forward compatibility. The new machine must have the new multi-touch trackpad and something--anything!--about the enclosure that is a step forward from the status quo. Slightly angled edges that make it easier to pick up? Anything! I want to look at this next one and know that my six-year wait resulted in something that is truly six years newer and ready to serve me for the next six years.

If Bessie “ups and dies” before Apple delivers that new MBP, then the joke is on me, especially since I have no back-up machine. But if not, and I ultimately end up having ridden Bessie to the finish line, then I deserve a medal!

Then do you think the touchscreen will be in the iMac first? The iMac Touch. I like the sound of that.

No. Honestly, look at what Apple is up to. The desktops will have a peripheral Multi-Touch tactile surface device that replaces the keyboard and mouse not a touch screen. Can't you guys see that the screen thing just is not a good way to implement this technology? I know Apple doesn't do everything they patent, but can't you see their train of thought in all of this??? Think about it, who wants to hold their arms up all day and go back and forth between the screen and peripherals. It is really stupid.

Except Apple's combo drive computer costs double the PC you described

I did not describe a particular computer. In fact, you seem to have trouble understanding words like "any". Let me thus rephrase it for you. The cheapest MacBook has ALL of:

  • Core 2 Duo 2GHz
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Mini-DVI
  • Good quality headphone port
  • FireWire 400 with up to 8W bus power

Please show me a single non-Apple laptop available now that costs the same amount or less and has all these features.

No offense, but you do know who Arn is right? In case you don't, Arn is the creator of the most well respected Apple rumors site. He's kind of well respected in this area...

So what you're saying is, he's kinda a big deal?! heh. Keep up the good work Arn! :)

According to an anonymous source, that along with a 17" LED Screen, Macbook Air type multi touch and Intel Penryn Processors. New Apple Macbook Pro's will be sporting the new NVIDIA 9500m graphics processor across all version of the notebook. The source goes on to say that they will range from 256mb of video ram in the lower end model, all the way to 512mb of video ram in the highest 15" and 17" models.

Also according to the source, the new notebooks should start shipping by the end of the week to all retailers. And also hinted at a possible graphics update to the 24" iMac as well.

Well well... a new graphic card. What do you think guys, something that might happen so soon?

A glass-type material that weighs less than glass is all i meant.
Fiberglass, also know as glass fiber, are made up of (yes, you guessed it) glass fibres which are woven into a cloth. The cloth is then laid down in a reinforcing agent, forming what is commonly known as GRP. Now, in order to have any strength at all, several layers of cloth need to be laid.

Of course I know who he is, but just making a blanket statement doesn't constitute the truth. You do know George Bush, right? ;)

Ya I'm pretty sure Arn is more respected than President Bush anyway lol :D Pretty sure I am too, and a lot of people lol.

I think the only feasible multi-touch approach to a workstation, that I could see now would be something like this

A wedge of sorts which perhaps the angle/height could adjust to the users comfort, drives and everything inside and behind.

Why are people saying the MB / MBA keyboard WONT feature on the MBP as its not very Pro?

What keyboard does the Mac Pro ship with? Is it not the wired MB / MBA style keyboard?

It cant do as 'thats not very pro!' ;)

They are in denial. It is beyond apparent that Apple is making this the standard keyboard on all Macs. And I LOVE them.

9500

nvidia 9500

is that any good, i searched a little bit about it on the internet and it doesn't seem to be that much better then the 8600, would it be worth it to update the 8600 to that card or would it rather be smart that apple would put 256 mb in the lower 15" model ?

sry for my poor english

In my experience the MB / MBA Keyboards are very much like the current Apple Keyboard. Thin buttons, very laptop-like whereas the MBP keyboard feels more like a professional office keyboard a la Logitech. If you'd close youre eyes you wouldn't notice you were typing on a laptop :)

Uh, I don't think so lol. Just how long has it been since you have typed on a desktop keyboard?

It seems that you guys call new MBP's every week and are wrong every time. What's funny is that if they do show up next Tues, everyone will think you guys are geniuses. I mean, if I guessed every week, eventually I'd be right. Right?

I have no intentions of buying a MBP, but I can't wait for them to get here so I can stop hearing about it.

But what's wrong with having the option to? You know you'd use it sometimes. Your laptop is not always in your lap.

Ya great, and when it is not in your lap the screen is even further away from you. Great idea. Would you guys just stop already. The fact that no one in here agrees with you guys, and agrees that it is a bad way to implement it aught to tell you something.

I didn't mean fiberglass. jesus. my bad. i just meant a glass-type material similar to glass that is lighter than glass.

There aren't any other "glass type" materials out there that is similar to glass. Glass it made up of silica.

Perhaps you meant "a product that is lighter than glass, yet still transparant"?

If so, you might want to try some of these:

Polycarbonate?
Acrylic?
PVC?
Another oil-based material using long polymers?

Those are all proven as being able to made into flat, strong see-through panels.

If Apple doesn't release new MBPs, I bet we'll see a bunch of outcrys flooding the forums... Until next week anyways. :p
