What's with all the Apple apologists out there? I'm not even interested in buying a new MBP and I'm still pissed that Apple is dragging their feet in the computer department. Since when is it okay to wait 9 months to update a computer? We rarely had these kinds of wait-times even in the PowerPC days... and didn't Apple tell us they were switching to Intel because IBM wasn't meeting performance goals? Because they weren't getting newer technology in a more timely fashion? Becasuse there was no way a G5 would make it into a mobile envelope?

Now the switch has come and gone and we're seeing the longest upgrade cycles ever on many of their products! The MacPro was overdue for an update, the MBP is now, and the MacMini is too after just suffering a really long release cycle last time! It really makes you wonder whether or not IBM was just a scape-goat for Apple's poor implementation.

...but what really chaps my ass is how many people here STICK UP FOR APPLE! Why is it okay that folks have to wait three-fourths of a year for an update for a new computer? Why is it okay that Apple is still using COMBO DRIVES? I've honestly never met so many consumers who so wholly embrace getting ripped off by Apple.

Let's think a little here. It's been almost 9 months since the MBP has seen an update. We haven't seen delays like this since the days of legitimate PowerBook G5 wallowing. Well, Apple solved the problem. We've "tamed" Intel. Where is the barrage of are all the top-of-the-line products they promised us?

As an Apple customer why wouldn't you be upset about this? Don't customers usually LIKE new technology? Or did I miss something here?

Finally a good post.

I truly believe that the apple fanboys that stick up for this crap are just apple enmployees. I wouldn't doubt Jobs was on here too. Apple is taking way too long to update its computers. Come on, the mac mini still uses 667 bus. Jeez.

The only reason I'm switching to Mac is for their OS. There is a premium price to use OS X. Other than that, compare to PC world, I'm not impress with what they offer.

ahh you are in the same boat as I. i actually don't even need to upgrade, as i have a m1210. but i seriously can;t deal with windows anymore. after being shown OS X by my mates, it totally rocks, and is just so well thought out. and the new multitouch (as seen on the MBA) is just totally awesome, and simplifies features that can be a pain in the ass in windows.

Yeah, the drives Apple ships are really bad. They are loud and slow. You pay £2000 for a notebook but you get only 8x DVD reading speed. It's like a bad joke. :D

I have to disagree with some of the postings here.

The MBP is a pro machine, it is about reasonable mobile power. Some of you are talking about it being thinner and lighter in the next version. I don't think so.

The power needs cooling this ussualy means moving the heat out without frying something. Remember also that video cards are also very hot even when undeclocked.

I expect the weigth and size will remain about the same until Feb/Mar 2009 when IMHO Apple is more likely to do some radical changes.

I hope I am wrong, but I do not think we will see a thinner and lighter MBP for a while.

You fail to see the superior build quality, the quality the brand exudes for business professionals, the OS and the quality of 3rd party matching components.

Superior build quality? :D The DVD drive is the worst I ever saw and apple ships the 15.4 MBP with panels from 3 different makers. I expect more for the pice. I want to know what I get when I buy a MBP and I want the best possible quality. Apple doesn't deliver that.

Let's say the MBP are released tomorrow and go out to the Apple stores throughout the US that very day. Can anyone make an educated guess how many MBP would be in stock per model? Maybe 100 of the 15" 2.4GHz model?

I only ask because there is no Apple store in my state, I have to travel over 3 hours to get to one. I'd hate to go early before any release and have nothing be released.

It's noteworthy that the other Apple rumor sites haven't even pickup on this. At first I blamed it on the weekend (unlike MR, other rumor sites seem to go into hibernation on weekends), but now... If the MBP is updated tomorrow, this will be a tremendous score for MR in the rumor community! :) Otherwise those other guys are sure gonna keep rubbing it in arn's face for a long time ;)

You guys have a very myopic view of Apple -- you see it from the standpoint of a few technology points.

You have to realize the PC mindset. All PCs are created basically equal, they are pure commodities. You don't really have much choice in packaging, desktops are huge noisy cheap towers. The operating system is locked into Windows Vista or maybe XP.

So how do you decide what PC to buy since they're all basically the same? It comes down to price and trying to get some xyz component to be 5% faster. Will the buyer really notice the speed difference? Heck no, but since they're all the same anyway, you may as well get the extra 5% for as little money as you can.

The Mac world is totally different. It is closer to the appliance business model. You are buying a machine which does something useful in a particular packaging. You can choose from a small variety of very distinct packages, laptop, small headless desktop, display with integrated system, or tower. Performance varies between them.

Each overall package has value based on what it can do for the user. The extra 5% doesn't matter as much as the fact that it runs Mac OS X and runs Mac applications that are generally easier to use and more reliable, and you get to pick a packaging that is most useful to you.

here is a feature i think most everybody has missed:

will the new mbp feature wireless usb?

my dream machine:

15" gunmetal black macbook pro 1920x1200 screen
2.8ghz or some form of quadcore mobile
4gb min ram
geforce go 9600 512mb
blu-ray
wusb
500gb 10000 rpm (which would burn it up but i can dream)
case redesign w/mag latch
multitouch trackpad - larger than mba
3/4" thick

what we will end up getting:

15" macbook pro 1680x1050 screen
2.6ghz penryn
2gb min ram
geforce go 9500/9600 (i really think there will be a video card bump)
no blu-ray yet
320gb 5400rpm 250gb 7200rpm
multitouch trackpad
0.9" thick

Hell yeah!, A gunmetal black MBP would be the sickest looking machine ever. I would love the other features too, but the price would be a bit high for my spec needs. I'd probably pay an extra $200 for a black MBP, plus I'm not sure how impressive blu-ray would be on a laptop screen, but you could salways hook it up to a television. The new MBP really do need a much better graphics card. Nice dream machine.

Larger MBP drive = 500MB or two

From what I have read, one possibility would be a larger drive for the 17" LED or two; perhaps offering iTeraByte_MBP ?

According to Consumer Reports they do.

same here.
own a pc with winxp which is more or less sufficient (P4 2,4 ghz, 1 gb ram, x1600pro) but the winxp fuc*ed it up big time. pretty slow....and my dad & mom own macs, they are just awesome.
lovin' front row too....

argh nightmare, ordered a macbook pro last friday, heard the update rumours saturday been trying to cancel my order ever since now the product is "ready to ship" the bastards really want me to have this thing.

now i have to pay £60 return fee when it arrives. whatever happens tomorrow i am going to be sick.
aye lesson learned check the apple rumours buyers guide before buying kids!!!

Just phone them up and tell them you don't want it. I've called Apple twice while the item was in transit to me to cancel and both times they waived the return shipping fee of £60. Indeed, even if they don't you can simply refuse delivery and then legally Apple have to refund your money without charging you any extra.

Maybe some chores around the house may get you a Mac. Even a hand-me-down (Dad buys new one for him and gives you his old one).

Good Luck

That's the whole point!

That's the whole point... Apple is a genius company at marketing their brand. They have more brand recognition than almost any other hardware manufacturer. Holding out on hardware and software releases, while possibly due to technical challenges, is also about marketing. We're all Apple junkies and need our fix of cool. Apple does a good job at keeping the slow steady (emphasis on steady) stream going, and rumor sites do an even better job at making us crave the latest and greatest. It's pure genius!

I don't know who you are preaching too since the general consensus is that an MBP update is overdue.

Anyway, the MacBook Pro can be ordered with a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo. That's one of the fastest chips you can put in a mobile computer right now (I'm not counting some desktop replacement notebooks that use absurd amounts of power). The only way Apple could one up that is switching to Penryns with up to 2.8GHz, and I hope this will happen very soon. But mobile Penryns are only available since the start of the year, so there isn't much to complain about. Now if they were delaying Penryn for another two months or so, then that would be another thing.

Then there is the graphics card. The 8600M is still good, but it's no longer cutting edge, so graphics should be updated as well. However, what does this have to do with the CPU manufacturer? Nothing, nor did it ever.

...but what really chaps my ass is how many people here STICK UP FOR APPLE! Why is it okay that folks have to wait three-fourths of a year for an update for a new computer? I "stick up for Apple" because even my PowerBook G4 with OS X Tiger is still a much nicer machine for private use than any Wintel notebook I have to use at work. I am only waiting for the new MBP because I need a powerful machine for work. Now that Apples can run Mac OS and Windows, it's just like in the Apple ad: The only computer I'll ever need.

I'm not saying that Apple is justified in still selling combo drives. However, I have previously listed many other examples of other vendors shipping outdated hardware. I have looked high and low for non-Apple notebooks with all of the features I mentioned, and let me tell you there are very very few. And those that do exist aren't cheaper, or not much cheaper than the Apples, and they don't include Leopard.

As an Apple customer why wouldn't you be upset about this? Don't customers usually LIKE new technology? Or did I miss something here?

The current MBP is still an absolutely amazing machine. If you believe there are many non-Apples that compare, then probably you haven't been looking at all of the features, or your focus is on features that puts you outside of the usual MBP customers. The MBP is only getting somewhat too expensive for what it offers, so I agree that there have to be hardware updates or price cuts soon. Price cuts (at least price cuts alone) aren't very Apple-like (well, except for displays), so it's got to be the former. I still wouldn't buy a non-Apple notebook. The few that come close in terms of performance and features ship with a mediocre (XPSP2) or an outright crappy OS (Vista), so no thanks. I'll rather wait.

dont worry. i'm fine. i've got enough money for a macbook pro (and here in germany its even more expensive than in the usa ;)) and i really want one of them :D
my dad owns a mini hooked up to a 23" cinema display hooked up to some hard drives which give him a little less than 1 TB of space. freakin' crazy. (my pc has 80 gb ) He has the newest keyboard and the mighty mouse - his work place is just awesome. im jealous

Are you kidding me? Since november there has been a rumor on this site practically EVERY week! what a tremendous score. My ass.

You are paying the premium for Apple's Research and Development and Build Quality. To achieve this build quality and style, Apple has to invest more in their product development, therefore, to achieve a respectable and industry leading return on that investment(...)

build quality? where? in an anodized aluminum paint that burns, cracks, discolors and peals? in polished metal that scratches and get sticky fingerprints?
