Nice. This is what the 4 and 4S should have looked like in the first place.

Still waiting for a design either slightly tapered or curved in some way. The flat slab just doesn't do it...

And the bigger the slab (with its sharp edges) the worse it will feel in the hand. Luckily, the phone only grows in one dimension otherwise it would be a catastrophe.

This thing is ugly as heck. I love the look and the sleekness of the 4's form factor, but the two toned back is hideous. This is either a fake, or an early prototype. I do not personally know him, so I cannot speak for him, but it is very unlikely that Sir Jonathan Ive create this phone as a final version. The back breaks so many rules of design that Ive so strictly adheres to.

This was released by Samsung to get those waitijng iphone to buy SGS3 instead.

You'd seriously wimp out over a new dock connector? I think it is long overdue.

Wimping out has nothing to do with it. I have a custom dock installation in my Mazda Miata. My wife and I are retired and we do a lot of extended traveling in the Miata (we did Route 66 - Chicago to LA last year). While traveling, the iPhone not only serves as a music jukebox, but as a navigational aid and a weather station. When traveling the country in the Miata, the iPhone is just as important to me as a speedometer and a gas gauge. Altering my custom dock installation would be a pain in the butt. It could be months or years before a company like Dension introduced a new model with integrated dock connector.

In addition, I dock my iPhone with my A/V receiver and I've got two "boom boxes" that I regularly dock my iPhone to. These would all have to be replaced or I'd have to use dock adapters (not an ideal solution).

The iPhone's current width can be increased without making it "massive". Is everyone around here prepubescent with with really small hands or something?

No, we have just all been spoilt with an AMAZING industrial design in a compact and small and usable form factor. We do not want Apple to destroy that or alienate the developers community!

Sure they could make it a tad wider, but I would not make judgment until we we see the actual next iPhone.

Yeap, I call total BS on this one, as I said, looking at that METAL case, where does the ariel go? Unless Apple attempts to redesign the WiFi and GSM ariels again, then the reception is going to be dreadfully poor with this design!!

Unless this extends the aerial from the edges across the entire back of the phone, thus massively improving possible reception... Of course, they'd have to find somewhere else for WIFI (probably in the plastic band at the bottom).

In all it's just very "un-Apple" like in terms of design. I worry about what this means for the MacBook Pros and other Apple products going forward.

From the iPhone 4 leak threads:

Hmm. The breaks in the case are very un-Apple.

[EDIT] Okay this is the real deal...and I love it.

I had this as a fake at first because the awkward, squared design seemed to be obviously NOT Apple. It is either a great hoax, or a step back for Ive and his crew on the design. The guts could be real, but that case is aweful.

There is absolutely no possible way this is 4. Apple would not allow such a weak piece of industrial design sport their elite marquee.

The design is just awful. It seems so strange that Apple would go such a route. Nothing aside from the front screams Apple/iPhone to me. The whole thing just looks terrible. I thought Apple might make the iPhone look like the iPad, which would be acceptable. But this is terrible.

There are plenty of others, but you get the point. If I had $1 for every time somebody complains a design is "not Apple-like," I'd be rich.

Apple products will be just fine going forward.

The 4 design is two years old.

If this is what Apple puts forward form a hardware perspective, they're getting left in the dust by Samsung/HTC. Apple is approaching the point that they'd rather follow on the hardware side and cash their checks from the software/ecosystem side. How very Microsoft of them.

The industrial design of something is completely subjective. There's no way a phone could get "left in the dust" based off its design alone, unless it still looked like a brick. The iPhone 4S is still a beautiful design that most people appreciate and admire.

Furthermore, IF you knew anything about Apple, you'd know they only use hardware that enhances the overall experience of using the device. They don't fill 'em up with industry buzz-words and lists and lists of specs. No consumer stands around and says, I think I'm going with the 1.4GHz SoC over this 1.2GHz SoC in this phone-I'd be able to save 30 seconds of time every month.

Having said all of that. I seriously doubt this is the new design. This is almost exactly the same. It would have to look identifiably and undeniably different from the previous design. These could have just been prototypes or even fakes made to throw people off or even weed out leaks in the supply chain.

Looking at the photos it's not clear if the plastic ends cover anything or are just decorative. Sure it would be fine if they placed them in the plastic ends. It just seems daft as with the iPhone 4 to the 4S they went totally overboard to ensure the 'antenna gate' issue was resolved, so I have faith, but I just can't see it in the design??

EDIT: Ah, taking a closer look at the design I see the two ends have breaks in the sides like the current design so they have placed the ariels I would guess at the ends? Well I would hope they have!

It's entirely obvious from the images that the metal back extends out exactly to the antenna bands, and is glass from there. So this was a functional design decision, not an aesthetic one.

Why not just keep the whole thing glass? Who knows? Better protection? But then you're likely to shatter the two glass ends in a fall anyway.

screen - I've said I've liked the taller screen (sorry devs). I wouldn't mind the black bars for a while until that real estate could be used for the app. Controls for games not so overlaid, minor but truer widescreen for movies, it'll still fit easily in my pocket.

headphones at bottom - If it's in my pocket, well, then it'll be upside down if I'm using my headphones. But then think of how I'd take it out - it'd be rightside up in my hand to look at. Maybe this is a good thing.

smaller jack - hopefully something standard... Or a really good trendsetter like thunderbolt mini - based on the standard.

appearance - well, the back seems to be the biggest issue with many here but I'll say that if incorporated properly, it'd be cool. LiquidMetal is proabably not able to support production in the iPhone kind of quantity, but some metals they make can be blown like glass - what if this material is blown with the glass and then milled on the inside? It'd be seamless and aside from an aesthetics preference would be a really cool technology to advance. I like the speaker grilles on the bottom too.

As long as it continues to do the things I need from a phone and "just works" with all my other devices and computer, I'll be happy with it.

Funny that a lot of people get bend out of shape about back plate, looks etc. when the first thing they'll do is put it in a protective case.

So, all one will see is the front screen portion. The rest is covered by hand, palm etc.

And, that matters?

Aren't all these part leaks a bit early for a September release?

Has anyone done the maths on how long after the 4S part leaks it was released?

I prefer the phone to feel comfortable rather than modern. :)

There is no discomfort (for me) with the flat back and being a slab. If anything the phone probably feels thinner with less of the bubble of the 3GS, not that I owned one but I have used a friend's to make a few calls and a round back isn't "ergonomic" so I have no idea how there is a comfort issue.

Also Aesthetics > Your Comfort = The :apple: Way! :p

Wasn't the rumours flying around for totally new design the pictures posted don't look much different than the current 4's just a tweak here and there. I hope those images are fake as it look like I will be sticking with the 4 for the time being.......

On a more appropriate subject, I note that this leaked iPhone body has similar speaker grills to the iMac. Makes sense from a continuity standpoint.

IF this is the design of the next phone, then I for one really appreciate the fact the space for the battery has gown by a healthy amount! I don't get 4G in the UK so if I can switch that off, I'll get great battery life :) happy day's..

It's cute.. That some of you will bash and talk ***** about the iPhone now, but if I search your name on here after its launched, all of you will be posting about your new iPhone...

Just spare yourselves the wasted time and embarrassment.

Can't see this being it.

The Apple logo on the black model is barely visible. I just can't see Apple having it that dull that it barely stands out considering they're marketing champions.

Oh and why does the white iPhone not have the 'assembled in China' underneath the iPhone tagline but the black one does?

Something isn't adding up here.

Rounded shape = ergonomic. Boxy design = not ergonomic. Just look at your own hand and try to give it a square shape ;)

Are you saying that it makes sense to have a desktop computer and a mobile phone with the same shape? Why? I would feel very uncomfortable holding iMac next to my ear.
