I'm ok with this. My 5s seems to be the exception to the rule as it lasts all day on a single charge with no problem. Even with heavy use the battery percentage does not dip below 40% by the end of the day.

Yeah my aging 4S and my partner's 5 both fit within that category as well. We both unplug them at 7am and have ~75% battery left when we go to sleep. They already last all day and more! When I traveled last week my 4S lasted for 2 days (just) because I was aware of the battery usage and rationed it appropriately.

IMO the iPhone is the best phone out there in terms of battery life because proportionate to the CPU, screen size and overhead of the OS it has the best battery life. A battery that's twice the size doesn't last twice as long if you have a phablet-sized screen, hungry quad-core CPUs and a bunch of JAVA-based apps running in the background (with a less energy efficient version of multitasking).

IMO if your 5S battery isn't lasting all day you should take it into the Apple store and get the battery checked out. My partner's battery was struggling because she used to always use it in bed while it was plugged in and plug it in/use it whenever the battery was below 100%. This killed the battery and in less than a year of usage the diagnostic tool at the store showed she's used waaaay too many cycles. Regardless they replaced the battery for free and she changed her usage patterns. The battery life is fine now!

I think there is some onus for users to understand they are working with highly complex devices with pretty crazily engineered batteries. If you use a $1000 phone like a toy then you're going to break it and get less out of it! Mine's an 'old' 4S but I paid ~$1000 for it back in the day. RESULT? I take bloody good care of it!! No scratches although I don't use a case and the battery is fine... I wonder why when others are battling with newer/more advanced models?

I'd be surprised. Especially when it comes to health and sports tracking with gps. That consumes a lot of power and I'd rather had the same thickness as with the 5s paired with 16+ hours on gps.
Still hope for a battery case made by apple.
That's why Apple introduced the M7.

Don't really care about the battery capacity, I care more about the battery life. As long as that is increased, it's fine. I don't think that's impossible, remember the iPad Air in which Apple increased the speed and battery life while reducing the capacity.

Compared to the iPhone 5S, the 6 will have:

- A slightly larger screen (38% larger)
- A slightly larger battery (16% larger)
- A less power hungry SoC (rumoured)
- A less power hungry screen (rumoured)

I think battery life could actually be increased over the 5S substantially.

The iPads have always been their own set of design constraints though. Processors, radios, plugs, storage and cameras are all approximately the same size whether they're in a tablet or phone. But a tablet (or phablet) can dedicate a disproportionately large amount of internal volume to the battery.

With each redesign, the battery life has bumped up an hour or two. If I had to bet, I'd say it'll be rated for 11-12 hours of Wi-Fi browsing.

It's the whole "my battery lasts all day already and has % spare because I ration my usage" argument that annoys me.
It's actual usage time that counts.
I could ration my usage and it last all day, but I'd only have 2 hours of usage at the end of the day.
Us battery complainers want more than that. We want it to last all day after actually using it, for 4, 5, 6 or more hours.
A person's phone lasting "all day" isn't a good measurement without more info, like usage and standby times out of the settings app.

Because they're not electronic engineers, but like to cherry-pick aspects of electronics knowledge and purport to be so. I *am* an electronic engineer, but I don't care enough about a flippin' phone to calculate precisely what drains what and why and for how long etc... coz' all that ain't gonna help you WHEN your battery dies - when it's dead it's dead, Fred.

Haha... indeed.
Unless you ask it nicely? Please phone, give me five more minutes!

I dont ration my usage. I use it as much as I want. I do turn off useless features like location services for iAds and the like. I easily get a whole day of use out of my iPhone 5. I think there are some apps that are draining these peoples phones. Like the Facebook app. I found my battery draining a lot faster when I used it. I deleted it and started using the browser for Facebook and it stopped draining so fast. there are other apps out there that are battery hogs as well. Hopefully ios8 will shine a light on the worst offenders and put pressure on those developers to optimize their apps.
Anyway, I've never had a problem with my battery lasting all day, and I'm at work 12hs a day, surfing, texting, and using bluetooth for my smart watch 24/7.

Edit: added a photo. It is Saturday, so usage is down from normal.

True statement.

Yes, yes, yes and again, yes! The 5S (I don't know about the 5, I have not had one) is an absolute disgrace in terms of battery life, and good on Samsung for their wall-hugging ads. I am outraged that I spent over £500 on a computer capable of so much to help me through my day, but which I have to keep plugging in or rationing my use of. Do I allow myself to watch the cricket for 30 minutes, or can I use the maps to help me find a decent restaurant? Can I listen to live radio, or should I save the battery in case I am stranded later at Clapham Junction and want to read an eBook with the screen bright enough to be able see it properly?

The pathetic, smug, indulgent nonsense about "super thin" whilst many of us find we can't use this device like the much vaunted Jobs would have wanted makes me sick. It is not the first time I have said this, and usually some Apple-apologist cretins come back with comments like " why don't you buy a battery case" or "why not use your phone less". You couldn't make it up...

Quite honestly, the mind boggles. The 5S is otherwise impressive, to be sure. But its pathetically inadequate battery makes it a daily trial when I am doing anything other than the most basic casual use, and if that is all I wanted from a phone, I would not have bought the 5S. Now, to praise Apple, the battery life they have got out of the MBAs is remarkably impressive.

Sounds like you purchased the wrong phone. Apple makes a limited number of models and design the phones to appeal to the widest possible audience. That is why the top two selling phones are iPhones. Mif the phone does not fit your usage needs, you should buy something else. However, you can't show me a 4" smartphone with demonstrably better battery life than the 5s. Therefore, you are not even making a valid comparison.

Fortunately for you, hi looks like the 5.5" iPhone May have proportionally more battery and perhaps better battery life. Maybe that one will work for you. In the mean time, let's compare battery life to products in the same relative product category. It would also be helpful helpful if you would stop personally attacking other people (a violation of this sites TOS) by calling them Apple apologists. We get that you made a poor purchasing decision. No need to take it out on the rest of the forum.

True statement.

Equally true is the fact that the complainers statements are equally worthless without the same data.

It is interesting to see how some apps inexplicably suck the battery down.

What's an electronic engineer? Is there a degree for that? Sounds cool.

That sucks...it just means I'll be buying a max boost battery case. I have that now with my 5S and I had it with my 5.

I really wish rather than making it super thin...they'd offer a bigger battery.

I couldn't agree more. The latest 5s is thin enough, I see no reason to go even thinner and sacrifice extra possible battery life. For me, they could have kept it the same thickness as the 4s and increase battery size.

I have had the 3G, 4, 4s and now the 5s. The 5s has been the worst for battery life. No wonder Samsung is laughing at us wall huggers. Come on Apple, screw the thinness and give us a decent battery life. :(

I agree. I posted my usage times in one of my previous posts on this thread.
I hit 6 hours usage when my phone switched off. On wifi all day.
Happy to post again on Monday when At work, no wifi.

I'd be happy with that! At that rate, you'll hit 8:50 usage time. I've never even come close to that on my 5S.
I'm holding out for iOS 8 GM, then will see how I go. Facebook is already facing deletion for me, I have noticed the battery drain difference when not using it. I was going to wait for the update fixing the bug they finally found recently (as mentioned on their blog) but might get rid for a week and see how my life (actual and battery) goes.

I see two options here. 1 drink the koolaid and explain how that size is OK. 2 be realistic.

No idea why apple wants to prove those Samsung ads correct. 5.5" is what I want luckily.

Haha... indeed.

For many years (15+ years) I've thought that phones need a "spare gallon" in their battery, which can only be activated/used by calling 911/112/999 emergency numbers. If the phone detects that you dialled a country-specific emergency no, it would switch to the "spare gallon" battery - this could potentially, LITERALLY be a life saver.

You should try some of the tips I posted. There is a lot of stuff on by default in iOS that you can shut off and never notice. Some might call that rationing. I see it more as turning off the air conditioner in the winter.
I turned all these settings off a while a go and only occasionally need to turn some of them on when I travel.

I think a lot of it has to do with which carrier you have and where you live. I have a fairly strong signal on Verizon and I'm on wifi at least 80% of the day. I'm also not outside for extended periods during the week, which means my screen isn't often at 100% brightness. On my iPhone 5 it's rare to be below 30% by bedtime. It's 7pm now and I'm at 84%. But I don't use my phone as much on the weekend.

I'm curious about that wider 5.5" model leak from the other day. If the 5.5" goes to a different aspect ratio and reduced bezel, which makes it not much taller than the 4.7", then maybe the larger battery would help some of you without being so massive? I know I do miss the old 3.5" ratio.

Just curious. I know 911 and 999. Who uses 112 for emergencies? Also, neat idea.

Ah thank you :)

112 is an alternative to 999 in the UK. I am sure there are many, many more, but since the UK and USA are well known... well, they're all I know :)

So which is it - is iOS super battery efficient or do these insignificant services that should only be doing ANYTHING a tiny fraction of 1% of the time really killing battery? How poor are you implying the programming is if apple can't make those unimportant system services not use up huge battery?

You can't have it both ways. Which is it?

iPhone 6 NEEDS to have all day battery. I am tired of charging the iPhone 5s during the day.

Am I the only person on the planet with an iPhone able to hold a charge through the day? I suspect the issue isn't so much the poor battery performance but that some people need to live in their phone 24/7. I'm not one of those types with my phone in my face every minute of the day. I look around and see people at restaurants texting and people walking through the mall with their eyes glued to their phone. It's incessant and I couldn't imagine a more miserable existence.

Maybe that's the big secret to a getting through the day on one battery charge--having a life.

I never said iOS was super battery efficient. There are problems with it. Mostly after ios7 came out. Notably the camera app has a bug that will kill the battery if not closed completely. But, over all it does a good job. Some of the services that are on by default shouldn't be. Such as the ones i mentioned. Also there are third party apps that are battery killers that probably could be fixed. Anyway I see it like this. If you leave your air conditioner on when you go out of town, you shouldn't complain about your electric bill.

No, you aren't the only one. It's just that the ones with the bad experiences are the most vocal. I have fine battery life. Not as good with ios7, but still a whole day at least. If I didn't I'd be complaining too.

112 is the standard emergency number in the EU. And some people in America actually know that they're not the only people living on this planet, that's why many carriers in the US map 112 on 911.

Get over yourself! You are one of those dummies who push technology past its limits. If you want a huge ass battery, go buy one. Buy a mophie! You spend too much time on your damn phone... or if you don't want to put it down, guess what? You have to charge it.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sorry. Cold Fusion hasn't made its way to your precious iphone. If you don't like it, buy a cheaper, heavier, plastic phone! Those DO exist.

Why do iPhone batteries have to be so ridiculous big compared to other manufactures of mobile phones? Apple is always trying to be different and proprietary at the same time I guess. Kinda reminds me of good old Compaq and Packard Bell back in the day.

Wait... us mericans aren't the only ones on the planet?! :roll eyes:

Also, I honestly thought the EU used 999 just like the UK.

Try using an iPhone in NYC. Go into a subway and you'll come out with about 20% drained.

London is the same. The phone is just constantly scanning for signals.

I had my iphone5 replaced before traveling there, and at only 2 weeks old I would have 0% by 3pm. The ip5 battery is the worst I've ever experienced in a phone... So much so that I probably won't get another iPhone.

Thats horrible. Have you had the genius bar check it out? If I couldn't get through a whole day with my iPhone I'd be there complaining that they sold me defective equipment. Maybe you got one with a bad battery. It does happen.
