word; at least for now, since they had to come out with something, they took the best MoBo available and stick it into a laptop and an iMac. Next will come revisions, redesigns, upgrades and the real picture will shape up in conformity to the Steve vision...

Hi All,

I'm new around here... found the site when I was looking for live coverage of the keynote (thanks so much for that!)

Anyway, I've been arguing a little bit over in the TiVo forums that it makes a lot of sense for Apple to do a DVR/Media Center. I happen to think we'll see a revamped super-Mac Mini to fit the bill. What better box than one already marketed without a keyboard or mouse? Throw in some better specs including the Duo, an Apple Remote, cable-readiness and a new version of Front-Row and you're set ;)

Plasma TV seems less likely to me, but certainly possible. They are already doing 30" Cinema Displays, so 42" or 50" Plasma Displays aren't too far a cry... I'd be doubtful if it included a full computer inside though, for life-cycle reasons.

and ps. To those who said it might be Tablet Macs... THAT is something I'd love, and seems a NATURAL progression to me. Macs have already appealed to us "artist types" and as an Art Director if I could sketch out ideas on the go with my Apple Tablet I'd be in seventh heaven!

I'll be watching closely... and betting on some April 1st announcements ;)

Yea I noticed Steve didn't have the same enthusiasm all along as he has had in prior events. At times, he kind of seemed "just there."
But that's just me thinking crazy.

Steve always has these "coughs" on stage. Just watch any keynote you can find....

Couple of things belong to Steve's performance:

- good morning
- we've got some great stuff I'd like to show you
- isn't that amazing?
- *cough*
- BOOM
- *cough*
- the fastest <insert Mac here> ever!
- *cough*
- we think this is the best thing we have ever done
- oh.... and one more thing....
- *cough*
- so go and check it out

Steve is THE master of presentations.

Have you ever seen one of his keynotes live?

If not:
Please do.
And see how it should be done. The cough really is part of his act. Dunno why. Maybe it's a mental thing... part of his concentration.

I watched many of his keynotes, but none in person (California is not really close to Switzerland, ya know...)...but this time he was REALLY ill and coughing a lot...it was not just that kind of "political" cough...it was a real one.

I haven't read everything in here so I am not sure if someone already said this, but the fact is that Intel chips were used by Pixar long before Apple developed its Intel contingency plan. Beautiful films like Finding Nemo were created on PCs.

Plus, when most of America uses these dull little boxes: to type up school reports, dissertations, emails, it's a bit insulting to them as well.

Well, that's what "sensitive" U.S. citizens do, find it insulting. The rest of the world thinks it's phenomenal. Besides, there is more to "America" than the U.S., I hope you remember this.

As for the ad itself, I also think it was a great work and worth an award. It never says "dull little people", it's "dull little boxes". You can be a genius and (be obliged to) work on a dull little box...no offense there, trust me...people are not computers; the former must be respected, the latter can be offended.

iPod 6g - video iPod?

guys... i found [ipod 6g pic] on the apple store by entering all kind of stuff at the url... just look at my avatar.

While it would appear that the image itself is fake, it would appear that there is some basis to this rumor.

Edit: Hmm, nevermind. Looks like Torronto Star has picked up an old news feed.

Kinda fuzzy: a mix of new facts (13 January 2006, kinda strange) with old news ( a new iPod capable of playing videos is old)... lol

Well... talking bout the louse iPod pic i made, look what i found on macbidouille.

macbookpro1.jpg

See the IR-Sensor? So that's the new MacBookPro. See the reflection of the sensor? No? Wonder what happened with it? Well, they say the pics are retouched pictures of the existing 15" powerbook.

Or this one:

macbookpro2.jpg

A bit harder than the first one, but when you take a secind look, you notice the display hook is the one of the 15" powerbook (the MBP has 2 since the iSight is in between).

You may find more of these things in the gallery. The stated things have been fixed by now. But on the macbook hardware page (http://images.apple.com/macbookpro/images/inteltop20060109.jpg) you can still see the old powerbook display hook and no iSight. So this tells us, the MacBookPro was not really finished at the keynote. I suspect the ones at Macworld were some kind of prototoypes maybe using a diferent chipset than the final product (it seems to actually be the same as the new iMac when you compare the firewire thing, support of 30" screen etc.). So that may be the reason for not telling us battery life: The MBP that will ship will just be different on the inside than tho prototypes in San Francisco. Maybe cooler (in terms of temperature).

Since I don't like ppl complaining too much about the new book, I'll write what i think is good.

1) same design, same keyboard, same trackpad. Good, I mean I can buy the thing knowing it will feel good in the hands and work fine like the powerbooks. I like to know what I',m buying befire I buy it.

2) MagSafe. Now thats an invention. I wouldn't have had this idea, but they got a point: everything nowadays is wireless, except electrical power. Well, you could transmit it via magnetism and induce the power back in the macbook, but the macbook would stick on the power outlets and you could't use the hard drive :)

3) Brighter Screen. The powerbook screens are bright enough for me. But you can't have it bright enough, can you? It's always good to know you can make the display even brighter.

4) This new PCMCIA-replacement thing (what was it called again...). Ok, PCMCIA is gone, but you get a whole lot of these devices as usb devices 2, and they are even cheaper. Hence in some time, you will be happy to have this slot to slide in the newest stuff available. Remember when Apple introduced USB? People complained there were so few devices to connect to it and they didn't like it for not being round. Now look where USB got. We even see vacuum cleners that plug in there...

5) The iSight. I bought a cheapo WebCam to use it vith skype, and it's just fun. But it's always a hazzle to attach it to the display (it got some swan neck cable), so i can only use it at home. I'm glad the rumors about the integrated iSight were true. And losing 60 Pixels in height.... oh well. Guess most people won't even notice.

6) No more firewire 800. I cannot remember a device that required that. Even firewire 400 is pretty dead since USB is a bit faster for most things. The cool thing about firewire is its own processor, so you don't have lags when transmitting video from your camcorder when the cpu is buy. I'm sure there will be sime adaptor that you plug in both fw 400 ports of the book and get a fw 800. Technically, it is possible.

I'm ok with the fact that perhaps he is elsewhere, perhaps thinking about the future of Apple, because if you can install Windows on Apple and MacOsX on a PC ( what should be possible...) where will be the difference between Apple and another PC? That may explain why Steve is preocupated and feels "elsewhere".

Design, design, design. Apple does things differently (not better) than the Average PC. So what would be the difference?

Apple: Elegance, simplicity, and Power in an integrated package.

PC: Power, expandability, and choice.

They are really two sides of the same coin, but obsolete technology (BIOS, legacy ports, windows) is getting in the way.

custom mobos

These systems won't have a standard off-the-shelf mobo - Apple didn't buy standard ATX or other boards and stick them in laptops and all-in-ones. (I don't think that a "standard laptop mobo form factor" even exists.)

The parts are most likely standard, but not the board form factor and layout.

My guess is that it's hard to find PCI Express 1394b controllers suitable for integrating into the mobo. Note in the diagram of the Napa chipset that there are a number of x1 PCIe busses for GbE and other functions.

(The PMG5 hangs the 1394b off a custom "high performance I/O" module that connects to the hypertransport bus - no HT on Intel systems.)

PCIe x1 makes more sense

BenRoethig said:
Hopefully firewire is an integrated component of the 965 chipset.
The 1394b transceiver requires discreet components on the board regardless - you need high power drivers to push the signals through the cable.

An integrated controller/PHY on an x1 PCIe makes more sense.

Note that GbE has the same issue, and is on an x1 PCIe on the Napa chipset.

New nano

This is cool, but why can't he ask his friend about the iPod line. I've just recieved my new 4 GB nano, but I don't dare to open the package, thinking we might see a 6 GB nano next week.

Shuffle @ 1/2 GB
Nano @ 4/6 GB

It's possible, right =/

Peace.

If its just more .mac stuff, Im gonna be steamed

well... an apple tablet

M$ has these things already. And they just kick ass! I'm sorry, they're lame. The joysicks and mouses aren't that bad tho...

Now, how would a "much cooler" apple tablet look like?

picture_b_himac_r12d.jpg

(see http://www.applele.com/pict_04himac_r12.html)

If you think of it, a tablet computer is just a normal one without mouse and keyboard. Put an optical drive in there and front row and here you have your apple TV! Unlike the normal TV, this one would be kept on the couch table. And when you wanna write some mails during the commercial break, you just tip on the screen and there you go. If you just wanna watch movies and other lo res stuff, the remote will do the job.

I like the idea

well, i never said it was a "standard" MoBo, just noticed that the same MoBo went into the iMac and MacBook Pro as pointed out somewhere on MacBidouille ( HardMac ) as well...

...that's, why i think a major redesign of innards and case is a strong possibility soon enough...

I think that people saying this current new MacBook Pro is just a stop-gap are dead wrong. The enclosure is completely new. Apple had to make all new designs and tooling for this MacBook, this is the final version. They could have easily drastically changed the design but obviously the Powerbook design language was considered far and away the best looking laptop out there. Apple does there products like Audi, simple, elegant, timeless; they refine the same themes over time (think iPod).
