I Believe..

When Bruce, sorry Steve Almighty announced last qtr's iPod results in the Keynote, he quickly followed up by saying that "This is Macworld, we're not here to discuss iPods" or something similar-That would suggest to me that other things are afoot here and we're ot just talking about shuffles!

I have zero tech know how, but it seems strange that all the rumour mills seem to have shut to the notion that flash will not be used in Laptops-surely if the iPods had a sell out qtr, this may force Apple to change it's plans for using it in Laptops, no?

Another subject which set the rumourmongering mills ablaze last year was when it was suggested about a G5 PB and that it would be using a new carbon fibre casing. Approx at the same time, Apple filed a patent for a casing which changed colours externally-this again was suggested that upon receipt of an e/m etc. it would save the user from opening the laptop hence saving battery life as another display such as those found on flip mobile phones could also be used to give info as to what had been received. If there are new forms coming out for Macbooks I think this would definately cover all bases for differnt coloured books.

The only reason I'm thinking all of this is that if I'm to drop £3k on a new laptop, I'm wanting to make sure it lasts before the end of the year, as I can completely see Laptops getting Blu-Ray support and updated Airport capabilities, Then again, this could all be a figment of my imagination!

oh, didnt know you could do attachments. ok. here's the screenie.

Nice try whoever did that, but you forgot to Photoshop out the "Page Not Found" at the top...not to mention it cleary breaks their design style and grid...drrr.

Not to mention MrCrowBar's ipod sports a screenshot from the ad that Apple pulled because its currently in legal hot water for it's similarity to a Lugz ad.

Merom is basis for Conroe & Woodcrest

I was searching and couldn't find a timeline for Conroe vs. Merom, aside from expectations that both would be Q3 releases, at about the same time. I'm curious - where did you see that Merom was expected first?
Here, I remembered reading an article back in December over on Tom's Hardware guide. http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/04/top_secret_intel_processor_plans_uncovered/

You can read the whole thing, but I copied part of the text for you (it's on 1st or 2nd "page" of the article).

"Merom Is The Mother Of All Upcoming Processor Designs
So far Intel has announced three processor versions that are expected to be launched in fall of 2006. Conroe will be the desktop processor... two cores and a shared 4 MB L2 cache. There will be a server processor... whose name is Woodcrest.
Both share the same genes that are derived from the processor design that is looked forward to as Merom. This one will power new mobile processors with either 2 MB or 4 MB L2 cache and two cores sharing it...
All chips based on the Merom design will be 65 nm parts... The manufacturing process is called 1264 and is already ramped up at both the D1D Fab in Hillsboro, Oregon, and in Fab 12C located in Chandler, Arizona..."

So, Merom is the follow-on to Yonah, but will be 64bit, and both Conroe (desktops) and Woodcrest (servers) will be based on it. I think we can expect Merom by September to "ascend to the throne" of our MacBook Pros (maybe by then we'll get used to the name), at which point the iBook/MacBook-whatever will likely get a "hi-end" model with a dual-core Yonah (single-core when it launches around March-April). Conroe will debut in the PowerMac's Intel (and name-challenged) successor, while Woodcrest will allow the XServe ("Please, pretty please, keep that name!!!") to blow the doors off its humble-by-comparison G5-iteration.

And in 2007 look for Merom, Conroe & Woodcrest (or their successors) to go to 45nm and quad-cores...

Why do people even try to do fakes like this? They are only gonna be bummed out when these products don't turn up. I don't know, just attention seeking I guess.

And that reason is USB 3.

Or WirelesFireWire/FireWireless... Or whatever.

And by the way, USB 3 doesn't have to be as CPU-intensive as USB 2. It's all data and protocols in the end, USB 3 could have a dedicated processor just like FireWire.
I'd never heard of it 'til it popped up inside the new MacBook Pro, but that Express Card/34(?) sounds like it can be used for numerous things, including FrWr 800... Am I correct that the optional 256MB version of the ATI X1600 actually has the additional 128MB sitting in this Express Card/34 slot?

If it's like a regular PC Card slot (basic form-factor), that would mean you could remove the card with the extra 128MB for the ATI GPU and slide in a card with 2-3 FrWr400 and/or FrWr800 ports on it... I don't know, I didn't see the keynote, and only have a few tidbits I've read around the web to go on, but that is my general understanding of this Express Card... And didn't someone earlier mention (in this thread) that Intel's Napa didn't (yet?) support FrWr800 on its chipset, so that would explain why Apple "left it out"...

Maybe this thread's rumor about waiting to buy a MacBook Pro has some credibility - at least in regards to Intel adding FrWr800 support later this Spring (when the 12/13" WS & 17" MBPs will debut alongside the "real" 15" MBP)... Regardless, I think I'd still buy the 15" Steve debuted on Tuesday... if I could afford it right now, that is... "@&^% this waiting for my W-2 so I can file my tax refund!!!"

You know... If... "IF" this rumor is true, about how this guy says to wait with buying this MacBook Pro, it would be deja-vu in a way... Remember when Apple released the original PowerBook G3 - it was basically a G3 crammed into a PowerBook 3400(?)... And a few months later they released the "real" PowerBook G3s.

Just wanted to see some reactions on that pic. Gotta improve my PS-Skill, huh? I post the good res image onw, so you can see how bad it was made. I forgot that legal issue with that eminem spot. But hey, for a 10 minues job its not that bad, huh? ...sry. Guess the mac cmmunity is not ready for my cool ideas :D
Oh yea, don't kill me ;)

but applele.com has some cool pics of fictive macs. the gallery rocks. i like the shuffle with display there.

after cheching in PS i <embarassed> must say the horizontal did get shorter. Dunno how this happened. Maybe I'll do something better next time to keep you entertained. But honestly, how could u actually improve an iPod in design?

All you people need to know something...

Apple engineers, developers and the whole crew have worked their butts off to get moved to the Intel platform.People here complain about it..

Apple came out with the rev A for a couple important puters SIX MONTHS EARLY..

Show these engineers some frackin respect..

or go by a Dell..
I could not agree more. If the iMac x86's "guts" look suspiciously like the last G5-revision's internals, it could be Apple had done much of the engineering for the x86 model with that update, and just had to "drop a new engine in it & polish the rims".

And the new MacBook Pro is well worth it when sitting side by side with the G4 - who knows, maybe the case looks so much like the G4's, because Apple wanted to reassure people that the switch to Intel "wasn't really that big a deal"...

That Apple chose to go with the 1.67GHz & 1.83GHz versions of the Yonah dual-core may have been in part, because the 2.0GHz & 2.1GHz versions would have the greatest supply-constraints on them for the first few months of availability (Dell, Acer, NEC, HP, etc.). Also, if this is a "transitional" (unlikely) Intel pro laptop - until the real 12/13", 15" & 17/19" models come out later this Spring - then it would be wonderful to see those models get the "jump" in CPU speed, along with all the other bells & whistles (FrWr 800, 802.11n, UWB, SATA150, whatever).

My vote is for a Big Mac Mini

PVR baby with Viiv and DL dvd burner. Maybe slightly bigger/thicker to accomodate the DL burner, like 3", just like a real Big Mac.:D

THAT would really kick a$$!!!!

Um I just got iLife 06 today and the icon for iMovie is EXACTLY the SAME as before. That image is also on the US site as well. Hmm can't fugure that one out??? Has anyone seen front row running on the new iMacs? maybe it is already like that...

I really hope there is another announcemet soon.... then I can stay up all night again watching lol.

i think i know the icon. if you open up finder, and then look at movies on your left. the icon for movies is the icon on apple's website, or at least i think. (sorry if this was already posted or if i'm wrong) maybe someone should double check me

Nope that icon in the finder is green and does not have numbers on it like the one on the website. It's Similar to the Final Cut icon but not the same.

If downloading movies and tv shows is strategic for Apple, then it would make sense to have something bigger than a video iPod for viewing. Perhaps a large screen (plasma, whatever) with builtin CPU and a wireless connection to the main computer, not so much for navigating the web, but only to receive contents ala video iPod, with a frontRow remote, to be placed in the kitchen or bedroom.

Merom in September... Later than Apple thought?...

Was just back at Tom's Hardware Guide, and came across this story about Merom: http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/01/11/merom_to_be_launched_in_september/

One interesting thing in it was the speculation that (and I quote), "Back in Fall of 2005, it had been speculated that Merom would arrive very early in Q3 of 2006 and possibly could have been the processor Apple wanted to use for its transition into the x86 world. Whether Merom is delayed or not, a September delivery date was too late for Apple to make the x86 move in order to be able complete the transition buy the end of 2006. Core Duo therefore was the obvious choice."

Regardless, I think that Apple did a very fine job with the (here's the gag-reflex on that name again) MacBook Pro. I want one now! Then I want to trade it in for a 2.33GHz(+) 64bit, dual-core Merom with an ATI Radeon X1900 A.I.W. + DVR + 256MB DDR3 VRAM (? - mobile version of their newest chip to be unveiled soon), 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 2GB NAND Flash OS-Drive (Robson), 160GB SATA-150 hard drive, BluRay SuperDrive, 802.11n + UWB, FwWr400/FrWr800/USB2/BlTh, 17" WS HD,... "and a partridge in a pear tree..."...

If it's NOT a new MacBook why did the source say that he probably wouldn't buy a Macbook at the moment? That's the portion that isn't adding up ...

Thats a great point... you're probably right (I'm kinda biased though, I want the 3 things I listed, not more laptops!..lol) The only reason I can think of why the source would say that if its not a MacBook is maybe just to save your money for something cooler? lol, I dunno.. Im reaching.

One final note of humor before bed...

Came across this interesting... and "cautionary" tale over at Tom's Hardware Guide (good site). Some of us may want to think twice before we start slingin' epithetes(sp?) at one another over our choices of OSs, etc.

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/01/12/aol_chatroom_suesfoes/

As that affable fool once said - just before he was arrested (again), this time for beating his wife; "Can't we all just get along?!?"
