I'd say the iPhone 4 is the pinnacle of design. It made all competing smartphones at the time look like cheap plastic toys.

I love my white 4S.. It's been a great phone. I had a black 3G that I thought was ugly, and I'm getting the 5S tomorrow (white/gold) but I think I prefer the smaller size of the 4S..
If the next iPhone is larger than the 5S, I won't be getting one.
This is interesting as the topic is on the aesthetics of the iPhone and not the functionality.
Yet here is an opinion praising the 4S, and not the iP4, when truly they are one in the same, look wise.
Just as it is with people you're attracted to: their personality trumps looks and they either take on an overall more attractive "appearance" or an ugly one based on connection.
Same with the iPhone!

Yes I could include the CDMA 4 in my likes but over here we don't have CDMA so it's the 4s
The 4S design still holds a special place in my heart. It was my first iPhone and I remember opening it and just staring at it in amazement.
The stainless steel band wedged between two glass slabs, such a simple, quality design. And my 4S still looks mint. It was a phone that was built to last, despite the ability to shatter if dropped.
But the space gray 5S makes me drool too. I like it much better than the slate. Had I upgraded last year to the 5, I would have got white/silver, but when space gray came out I had to have it. If slate was an option for the 5S, I would have got silver. The contrast on the back of the space gray looks amazing.

The black 5 was the most aesthetically pleasing, IMO. I would say the 4, but though I believe it to be the largest leap in design thus far, that has nothing to do with the question.
After the last iPhone is produced, when it is all said and done, the iPhone 4/4S will go down as the iconic iPhone design. Probably Apple's best product to date.
iPhone 5 by far .... Too fragile, but very beautiful

Best in-hand? 5c/3G/3GS. That curved back is 100x more comfortable than the brick design personally. And the smaller screen was just fine for me. I find myself trying to reach corners with the 4" display too often to say it's a good decision.
I personally hate the design of the 5. The front and back panels are not equal widths and that metal+glass back is horrid. TEHO.

The original iPhone. It looks like it's from the future when you compare it against the competitors of its time. Even after 6 years I still think it's a beautiful phone. The iPhone 5/5S looks more refined, but it will never have the same impact as the original iPhone had. So basically it's a competition no future iPhone will ever be able to win .
