Also, it seems clear to me that Google and Motorola will still operate independently for the most part.

That's REALLY disappointing. I wanted to see Google and Moto really unite.

----------

The specs themselves aren't disappointing. We've all, more or less, known about what to expect.

My issue is with the way they're handling this new device.

ATT exclusivity for color options and storage options until the end of the year? Utterly stupid.

No unlocked price information (another move to please the carriers, I'm sure)? Lame. And what will the unlock price be? It'll be only one variant like the GE One/S4? Also lame.

So the phone itself is exactly what we expected. But all this other BS, totally didn't expect that. And that's what's disappointing.

Yes, specs-wise. it is totally what was expected. The problem though is everyone was also under the assumption that this was going to be priced much lower than your typical flagship and that's where the value was. At these prices, the specs ARE dissappointing. Instead, Moto used the exact same release model we've seen over, and over, and over (pricing, some carrier exclusivity, etc) and on a device that specs-wise cannot compete with current offerings.

They are using last years tech yet pricing like it's brand new and telling us to trust them, the user experience is what makes it. This device is already old news and will be ancient history by the time the Note III and next Nexus arrives.

How is Motorola going to gain traction at the same price point as the Galaxy GS4? That's just ridiculous.

This is turing into the BB Z10. Tons of hype, same price as the flagships, but with inferior specs.

This needs to be $99 on contract. Even $49 on contract. Why would anyone get this over a HTC One or GS4?

At least it took the decision out of my next phone....nexus 5 cannot get here fast enough.

Yeah, that's the sad thing. The next Nexus 4/5 will likely have more power and sell for only $100 more off contract. Just can't get my head around the pricing on this one...

Why should I buy this instead of the next Nexus 5? It will have better hardware, better software and will be cheaper.

As I said before, this phone wasn't that exciting.

Cannot disagree.

Wow, the world must be coming to an end if I'm in complete agreement with AutoUnion39!!

(And to be clear j/k, just busting balls mate, considering we've knocked heads a few times previously ;)).

The last hope is the unlocked price (because the phone itself still looks and sounds amazing), but I'm not holding my breath. Also, lack of 32GB storage from the Play Store is an instant deal-breaker.

How can Motorola, and by extension, Google, both be so stupid about this?

Staying with Verizon, staying with iPhone.

Almost switched 2x this year (when the stock version of Galaxy S4 and stock version of HTC One was announced), but either they were not on Verizon or they were only unlocked versions.

What a big disappointment, the screen has a pink hue similar to S3 blue hue. It's way over priced, it's not in the play store, it's down right sucked. Fail!

Considering TMo sold the Nexus 4 for $199 on contract and carriers are trying to lessen their subsidy... maybe there is hope.

The only upside to this I see is that AT&T is finally not shafted when it comes to Motorola android phones. We've always gotten junk from Motorola (Backflip, Atrix, Atrix HD, Atrix 2, etc), whereas VZW has gotten the better Droids.

This is interesting because AT&T was the first to market with the RAZR and PEBL way back in the day.

The Verge has confirmed with AT&T the prices of $575 and $630 off contract, but the phones will remain locked to AT&T even when purchased off contract.

I wish they just put a google nexus design backplate / colour on it and sell it as the next nexus for $299-349 , but that's just very wishful thinking.

I do really like the size, shape and design of the handset though. :( :(

That makes no sense. Any phone bought for full price on AT&T will be unlocked by them. Even the iPhone

My predictions:

-4.3-4.6" screen size
-1280X720
-2GB RAM
-Dual core CPU
-2000-2200 mAh battery
-$200 on contract for 16 GB
-$600 off contract
-8MP back camera
-And from the pictures, it looks like power button and volume buttons are on the same side

Looks like I was pretty close all around :D

Screen size was slightly off, resolution and CPU were spot on. Battery was on target. And pricing for on contract was spot on.
