Droid makers are such tryhards LOL. When people say droids are better than iPhone i just say well they come out with a droid every 6 seconds so ur already outdated. Also the droids are always ugly and what will I do with that gigantic screen plus u will use up all of the usually limited memory and have to buy a sd card. So good luck with droid

At the rate that Android phones are being released, I think the days of Apple just being able to do a yearly update are over. While Android is still behind IMO, the gap has narrowed.

Haha no, the only reason Android comes out with so many phones is because they have so many Hardware Companies that use their OS. Look at Blackberries, they have multiple phones at once and so do other companies. It just happens with touchscreen phones now. Apple doesn't have to change a thing. It would be ridiculous to release an iPhone every 6 months.

HD What?

Can anybody tell me what's the advantage of HD or any HiRes on a 5" display? You want to enjoy HD get a bigger screen at least 30", that's where you going to enjoy your photos and videos with this size of screen. Yeah SJ says nice fonts on a HiRes iPhone 4 display. Are you going to read more now because the font is much better? Not! Wake-up people! The reality is everything looks good on a 5" display unless the video or photo is a crap! Ohhh high density!?!?!

That would suggest that the device is what... 20% larger than an iPhone? I really like the current size of the iPhone, as it's just about on the limit of what I consider acceptable for a phone, a centimetre wider or longer and you're edging into PDA territory and those are things that don't fit well in a pocket.

So I don't really see a larger display with similar dpi as an accomplishment, and a similar sized screen with great dpi seems a waste of money as I've seen the iPhone 4 and you have to be within normal reading distance to start seeing pixels, and that's not how I use a phone, so pushing for higher dpi seems like it'd be a waste on iPhone sized devices.

The iPhone was the best phone until this year, absolutely.

But the reign is over. The Android phones coming out before the end of this year just blow the iPhone out of the water.

The Android 2.2 UI is basically as good as iOS4, with the advantage of being open and it runs full Flash. Android OS 2.3, which will focus on UI, will be even better.

So, finally, we have a choice.

Once you've used a 4"+ screen, the 3.5" iPhone screen looks bleh. Seriously, I was actually enjoying browsing the web on the EVO, while I never do on my 3Gs.

Useless resolution bragging rights notwithstanding.

Flash sucks (especially on a phone), so I'd put that as a negative, not a positive.

iOS is superior to Android OS. Faster, more intuitive, more consistent across different SKUs.

I would rather have a 3.5" screen if it allows the device itself to be much smaller.

In the past Apple have had there own space, no PC manufacturer in recent years has been able to compete on similar terms,. Same with the ipod although arguably for different reasons (ipod is the only music player in the shop these days)

The smartphone market looks like its not going to lie down and have its tummy tickled. I think the Google phones are an excellent competitor where as wild horses wouldn't drag me from my Macbook to a PC, I will pay the premium. With iphone and Android, not so much, mild donkey's may be all thats required.

Smart stuff from google,

LOL!

Update 2: Verizon has modified its Droid X teaser page, replacing the "720P Screen" text with "Captures 720p", indicating that the earlier "error" in it's teaser page had sufficiently done it's job of attracting attention to the forthcoming device by drawing momentum off the iPhone 4 craze.

There, fixed that for you.

And if they were releasing a phone with a 3.0" screen you'd rather the larger screen.
iOS isn't superior to android OS, not faster, more "intuitive" is that an opinion or fact? and more consistent across different SKUs? as in what, the iphone ipod and ipad? how about the fact that you're stuck with AT&T.
And flash is amazing on a phone.

Sure. Easier to read text and sharper graphics. Higher resolution is a benefit on any size display. But no phone has HD display yet, if you look at the thread or the update to the article, in this case it was a mistake.

You want to enjoy HD get a bigger screen at least 30", that's where you going to enjoy your photos and videos with this size of screen.

That's nice but completely unrelated to the resolution of a phone. You're not going to carry a HDTV around with you.

If you're not able to understand that higher resolution looks better, I don't know how to help you.

So you're making a comparison to an iPhone OS that you haven't used yet, then you're talking about a future version that's a long way off. Dismissing higher resolution display as "useless" doesn't buy you much credibility either.

This wasn't a "typo".

You really think Motorola/Verizon put up a website without checking it 10+ times for mistakes?

They tried to get attention by lying.

I was hoping for some competion for the iPhone too. Between page 1 and 6 of this thread. But reality kicked in. Did you notice? ;)
Don't worry, the tech industry is constantly moving forward, so competition will come.

Personally, I'm more excited for the rumored Droid update from Motorola later this year. While I'll definitely "believe it when I see it", a 2 Ghz Snapdragon derivative would make for a very, very fast system.

If it does happen though, I'll be really excited to see how people here try to discredit it, lol...

You mean like how Apple put up images of the iPad showing what appeared to be Flash-based websites loading properly, when Steve Jobs' own attempts at loading the same site when unveiling the iPad showed the infamous blue box?

Yeah...

This is an overly optimistic assessment IMHO. All the best Android phones coming out right now are still only riding on 2.1. 2.2 doesn't even register on Google's own stats page. ~50% of all Android phones right now are still on 1.x according to Google.

I completely disagree that Android phones will be "blowing Apple away" That is just complete nonsense talk. It will be 2 years before everyone is running on Android 2.2 let alone 2.3. That system is a fragmented mess.

Finally, take a look at the apps on Android vs iPhone. Android's apps are pathetic at best. Look at something like facebook for iOS vs Android and so many others. Its completely hilarious. Lets not even get started on gaming. I've really been enjoying Madden 2010 and Splintercell Conviction on my 'old' iphone. I'm sure Android has some pimp tetris and solitare going on.

I would imagine these companies should be smart enough to know that pulling a stunt like this will get people's attention in a negative way. At the same time, it's hard to believe it was a typo. So it's their loss, unless at some point they were planning to get a 720p display, then later realized it was not going to happen.

Who really knows...?

High dpi displays aren't some magical technology. I still remember 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" Latitude. Next up, Sony.

I bought my ex a laptop with 1280x800 on a 12.2" at 125ppi.
That is my reference... I don't like to go below 125ppi.
My laptop is also a 1920x1200 15.4" like your's (Dell XPS) It is magnificent at about 150ppi for normal monitor viewing distances.

My co-worker has a Droid and its simply amazing at 265ppi. Zooming out on a web page and seeing crisp readable fonts is awesome. I haven't seen the iPhone v4 but I would imagine it would be indistinguishable between the Droid even at very close viewing distances. 265 to 330 (or whatever it is) seems overkill... but like I said, I haven't seen one yet. I'm just saying the Droid is amazingly crisp at 265.

Conclusion:
125ppi is my standard for laptops.
265ppi is my standard for phones.

Yeah there's no way that they didn't know what they were writing. Not saying Apple didn't do this with Flash on the iPad at that one point, but pretty ridiculous to lie about something like that because it's hardware, not just something like Flash, which I hardly miss other than Hulu.

If they honestly just made a typo they need to do some firing, because that's a big typo.

Your statement almost seems to justify Apple doing it because "it's Flash".

There's a very small and very vocal group around here who hate Flash, but the reality is, A LOT of people use it regularly. So making it appear as if Flash is supported, when in fact it isn't, is just as bad as falsely advertising a hardware feature...
