yet to u apple toting the retina display - u go gaga for it!

You are very bias

are u kidding me u fanboy?

How great would it be to show up with a movie or tv show u downloaded from iTunes and play it on a large plasma or LCD? Yah sounds pretty useless to me fanboy!

Oh wait! When apple releases it's own hdmi out on their iPhone you will love it! Don't forget fanboys didn't think MMS or video recording was needed now look at where we are

Apple will come out with a replacement for its TV appliance (AppleTV) that will be small, based on the A4 and WiFi and with the HDMI interface (and probably a tuner) that you are asking for. I would rather have one of these attached to my screen than have my actual iPhone or iPod Touch attached to an HDMI cable, even if I had to carry that around as an accessory.

HDMI on an iphone doesn't do anything for me.

Once your iPhone is tethered to a TV, it isn't a phone, game machine or anything else for that matter. It's just a storage device.

Gotta love the fanboys. When the Retina Display was announced they were falling over themselves about how this is a "game changer" and the most amazing screen for years to come, blah blah. Now that the Droid X will have a higher resolution screen they cry: "Specs don't mean anything! User Experience! We never cared about the Retina Display in the first place! Blah blah".

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the big sell for the Retina Display _is_ that it will provide a better experience. That's why Apple isn't marketing it in big letters as "326ppi Screen!"

The new resolution is awesome, and Verizon's marketing here is just proving that it is a game changer. I, however, don't believe Moto is anywhere near releasing a phone with that res. So it's marketing speak, or a product that is months and months away. If they do, good for them.

There is a point where a larger screen becomes a burden. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I use my iPhone primarily as a) a phone, b) as an iPod, and c) to check email. I don't need a larger screen if it means having to carry around a larger phone. If it starts to get too big to carry in my pocket comfortably, I may as well get a small, cheap flip-phone and an iPad.

Then it's not for you. Fortunate thing is, Android users have choice of screen size. Android can offer different screen sizes to cater to different people's needs. Not a good basis to dismiss a product.

Even if the Droid ends up with 400 pixels per inch it's still not as good as the iPhone Retina Display. Apple doesn't make the screens. Surely one of many Chinese companies that have the technology supply it to Apple. Apple's genius is in the marketing. Most people will remember a Retina Display versus just throwing numbers at them like 720p. It's marketing over reality - and it works.

Good point....Firewire, Bonjour, i<insertNounHere>, FaceTime...people love those buzzwords!

I don't think apple will change the way it does things, apple is not afraid of anyone! A new android phone comes out everyday! Plus too many people would be pissed if they released more than 1 iPhone per year!

I agree. Every new iPhone rolls out each year comes with an updated IOS as well. New hardware with new software integration.

So one new upgrade every year is more favourable to the developers, in making use of the new features that the new hardware + the software together bring.

I think Retina Display was a horrible naming choice.

My first thought when I read that is that it was some sort of immersive-reality projector, sure to get Apple in trouble with state Departments of Motor Vehicles...

Sorry, but hardware specs are what people latch onto. It's hard to condense "the experience" into quantifiable figures people can compare to other brands. Most people don't even know what a 720p screen is, anyway- it just sounds impressive.

No, most people don't care about hardware specs, they just want a simple, pleasant, and easy to use experience. They're responding well to Apple's marketing.

Big beautiful screen, but the real difference is in Androids superior OS, and the fact that Apple can't censor your experience.

My reason for buying any Apple product is, always has been, and always will be getting a great end user experience. That's what Apple is all about and they do it better than anyone else. Sure there are other things, like great hardware design, but end user experience is always number one.

Having more pixels doesn't not mean better. It is a nightmare for developers if they have to re-code for every different device resolution.

So the key is "resolution-independent".

It seems that Apple has archieved it with iPhone. First, the coordinates are already float points. Second, developers still code in 320x240 work space even with the iPhone 4.

The more iOS advances, the more obvious how forward-looking Apple has been. Some of the designs (for example, float based coordicates) seemed very strange in SDK2, and now make perfect sense.

What's with phone's having HDMI outputs now-a-days? Seems like such a useless feature to me.

Video out is a great feature, and it's nice to support the higher resolutions. Nowadays I watch almost all TV output from an iPod and I expect I'll continue to do the same when I eventually upgrade.

And drain your battery. See no point to this feature and it's still a cell phone. Cell phones need to last at lease a whole day.

If you're plugged into a TV, that means there's an electrical outlet right there as well, so you just plug in if you want. The apple video cables are even bundled with a charger.

It's mostly a breakthrough in marketing, since that resolution was done before.

What phone (or any other display) already has 326 ppi or higher?

For instance, the so-called "retina distance" for the iPhone 4 is about 11".

Are you sure about that? The iPhone 4 has 60% more pixels. Is there a standard formula for "retina distance"?

The real question is, do you really want to watch a movie on a 4" screen? Is this really the experience that filmmakers put in years and years of work for?

I'm sure they aren't thinking about people watching the movie on planes or in the back seat of the car either. But people can and people do, just because it's different than watching in a theatre doesn't mean nobody wants to do it.

And resolution is dependent on viewing distance. Will higher resolution make the movie look better even on this size screen? Absolutely.

...and ripping off a Lucas trademark?

They are licensing the trademark from Lucas.

Mighty Mouse, iPhone and iOS are 3 trademarks that Apple ripped off other companies.

Again, licensed in all three cases.

Whats a "1080p output"?

HDMI at 1080p resolution? Seems pretty easy to figure out.

Superior is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps when Android catches up in the user experience realm with Gingerbread (along with actually implementing all the cool features they wowed people with at I/O... but aren't actually shipping yet) you'll have a point, but for the moment, iOS is still leaps and bounds ahead in terms of practical, real-world usability.

+1. Apple doesn't give a rats A** how anyone does anything. I promise you, Jobs and Co. care less about market share, how many they sell, etc. All they care about it putting out the best product. They don't care if other people use it, they sleep well knowing they sell the best, and use the best.

Unfortunately, that's the old Apple. Now, all Apple wants is your money, no matter what Jobs may say about it. It's sad really.

Hell, I'd almost prefer to go back to the days when all things Apple were only enjoyed by a minority.

I agree wholeheartedly. They had to actually make the best products in order to remain competitive back then.

Yeah, noticed and corrected. Still beats 326, though. ;)

Well that's the point, isn't it?

Edit: Wait, why did you correct 329 to 326? The calculator says it's 329.65... unless of course the Retina display isn't precisely 3.5" but a fraction smaller.

iPhone (Original through 3GS) was 163ppi. Steve Jobs talked about doubling the pixels in each of the two dimensions.

It's a total play to prevent people from jumping ship and pre-ordering an iPhone.

Exactly. At least they aren't paralysed by the iP4's pre-order success.
