Even if the Droid ends up with 400 pixels per inch it's still not as good as the iPhone Retina Display. Apple doesn't make the screens. Surely one of many Chinese companies that have the technology supply it to Apple. Apple's genius is in the marketing. Most people will remember a Retina Display versus just throwing numbers at them like 720p. It's marketing over reality - and it works.

That leaves 12 GB, which is plenty for apps and music for some people.

Just because it's not enough for you, it doesn't mean it's not enough for everybody.

its enough for me but i dont see why you would only want to hold one movie on ur phone then take it off and put a new one on, it would be a lot easier to just stream it to ur phone then to the tv

Again, everyone's usage scenario is different.

I don't have or want an Apple TV. And my computer is nowhere near my TV. So if I want to watch a movie on my TV, it would be nice to be able to dump it onto an SD card, plug my phone (which is portable, obviously) into the TV, and watch it, and then when I'm done, delete it.

I don't plan on leaving AT&T anytime soon, so I hope an Android phone comes to AT&T with HDMI out because I can see myself using that feature very often.

In the past Apple have had there own space, no PC manufacturer in recent years has been able to compete on similar terms,. Same with the ipod although arguably for different reasons (ipod is the only music player in the shop these days)

The smartphone market looks like its not going to lie down and have its tummy tickled. I think the Google phones are an excellent competitor where as wild horses wouldn't drag me from my Macbook to a PC, I will pay the premium. With iphone and Android, not so much, mild donkey's may be all thats required.

Smart stuff from google,

it really boggles me how all of these competitors try to outdo the iphone and miserably fail...it's not just about the screen or hardware, it's about the experience, the iOS and thats where others fail.

Exactly.

It's taken years for Apple to develop this experience (iTunes, iPod, iPhone and iOS). Through this experience, they have also built up their brand name to an unthinkable level. So to really compete with Apple, not only do you need a good product/EXPERIENCE, but you also need to build up your brand name.

However, competition seems to always focus on tech specs- something that I think Joe and Jane Consumer know absolutely nothing about and have no intention of learning about. Furthermore, we have gotten to a point where hardware far exceeds the needs of average users.

It is truly the software era but a lot of people haven't figured that out. As more and more people are adopting more devices into their lives, it has never been more important that the experience (ie SOFTWARE) is simple, enjoyable, etc, etc.

The iPad's competition will no doubt fail in the same way- unless people really start to get it.

biggest screen wins?

Why not just put a phone on the ipad or a macbook pro and we can get into the 'who can make the biggest phone' competition? Personally, I would like to hold my 17 inch macbook pro upto my ear when I make calls, and it can run logic pro... what smartphone can do that? ;)

I have a Droid and switching.

My friend has a Droid and they are great phones. Their OS though is very slow...

This is the biggest gripe that I have with the Droid. Even though I own one I'm tired of the interface. To update an app it takes at least 3 taps to get it to download for each and every app. As well as the fact that the same apps are supposedly updated every week with no visible changes. Also the speed of the OS really frustrates me. No comparison to the iPhone. I can't wait to get my iPhone 4.

Sorry, but hardware specs are what people latch onto. It's hard to condense "the experience" into quantifiable figures people can compare to other brands. Most people don't even know what a 720p screen is, anyway- it just sounds impressive.

So if that's the case, specs don't matter. User experience does.

What's with phone's having HDMI outputs now-a-days? Seems like such a useless feature to me.

seems like its just as useless as a front facing camera on an iphone that you will barely use, and in order to use it you MSUT be on wifi and other person must have an iphone 4. that seems pretty useless given the fact that wifi isn't every place you go and if your home a normal person will just use a computer

If the camera records in 720p then you'll be able to play your videos on your TV, in same way as regular HD video cameras can. Sounds like an OK idea - playback content in the same format you've recorded it in?

This phone is really nice and it looks great. All of your hate is just stemming from jealousy and fanboyism.

Accept the phone for what it is.

Its got great hardware, specs to back it up, and a great OS running on it. What more could you want in a phone? It just comes down to a matter of preference after all that.

Don't say the phone is garbage just because you can't get it or because you want to justify your iphone.

Just crazy-glue the iPhone to your MBP and you're good to go. No big deal.

;)

Additionally, Facetime's utility will increase as more iPhone4's are sold (600,000 in one day and counting) and as others adopt the standard (skype is interested.)

Yes, but chances are you won't know most of those 600,000 people, and as such you won't be calling them, and even if you did you wouldn't be wanting to video chat with them.

I see Facetime as being useful primarily in families where each family member has an iPhone, but not so much outside of families. And even then, the fact you need Wifi makes the feature next to useless. I dunno, I just don't see it really taking off... yet. Maybe during the first month the iPhone 4 is out, as people want to test the new feature, but I see it tapering off after that.

Gotta love the fanboys. When the Retina Display was announced they were falling over themselves about how this is a "game changer" and the most amazing screen for years to come, blah blah. Now that the Droid X will have a higher resolution screen they cry: "Specs don't mean anything! User Experience! We never cared about the Retina Display in the first place! Blah blah".

It's a total play to prevent people from jumping ship and pre-ordering an iPhone. Look for them to clarify this point at their press event the day before the iPhone actually ships, and we will learn that the phone has an ordinary, run of the mill screen.

Or they're "pre-announcing" it, and it won't be shipping for six months out.

Corrected for you. :)
Yeah, noticed and corrected. Still beats 326, though. ;)

Edit: Wait, why did you correct 329 to 326? The calculator says it's 329.65... unless of course the Retina display isn't precisely 3.5" but a fraction smaller.

If anyone truly believes that the front facing camera won't be implemented in other ways through different apps, then they are just ignorant. As far as getting around the wifi issue, there are apps you can download with jailbroken iPhones that trick the phone into thinking its on a wifi network. It's funny how there is always an answer for an iPhone diss, but usually never an excuse for why Android phones are now the Walmart of the smartphone world.

i like that idea, i wish the sd adaptor for ipad could work with iphone to use as a temporary expandable storage for like a couple of movies, thats something i would use as well instead of buying an apple tv
