I think Motorola has a huge pair of balls to put this ad out. The basically show the historically important "tablets" and admit the iPad set the bar as the current standard for all tablets to be judged by. If the don't deliver and sell millions of tablets they will just become the next "Joo Joo" wanna be tablet that is quickly forgotten about.

Personally I enjoy my iPad but would love to see something that works as well, is smooth and fluid when scrolling, loads apps as fast, has an equal battery life etc... So far nothing comes close to the overall build quality and software " polish". Complain about the few thing the iPad doesn't do all day but until people show me another option that "does" it's a waste of time that consumes the closed minded few that hate Apple just because. Every OS, every manufacturer has it's list of irritating restrictions, Apple's lack of say, flash is just very publicized due to the fact they sell millions of the things. I could list off all the junk tablets from Archos, Joo Joo and numerous "kirf" companies but they are so bad overall they never sell enough to make the headlines where people even notice.

Motorola has some huge shoes to fill, if they can pull it off it will be an amazing tablet indeed. I hope 2011 is the year we see real competition in the tablet space. I am waiting for anyone to deliver a quality tablet that is "the next step" in every way.

Where does this apple wanting to get rid of the home button come from? I've seen it mentioned like 5 times in this thread with no source of where it came from. Apple has done this type of thing getting rid of all buttons on their shuffle and it wasn't as widely accepted as the old shuffle. Controlling the ipod shuffle through the headphones alone was a stupid idea. Getting rid of the home button is a stupid idea.

The video is awesome but I just think all competitors are far behind. More than one year behind, so they have to catch up fast.

You can laugh at their ad, but believe me, Motorola is serious about their products. Their stuff works, and if there are glitches, they update their software right away. I had an Ipad and really liked it, then I got a Droid X and a Droid Pro for my wife, and suddenly the Ipad got a whole lot less use. Unless the Motorola tablet is tied to a data plan with Verizon, I plan on taking a very serious look at it. Gave my Ipad to my daughter.

As the lucky recipient of your iPad, your daughter may never tell you, but she must think you're a little lacking in foresight. The future of these devices is based around apps. Apple's iOS is already the most respected target for developers. Android will always be an afterthought for developers.

And when the majority of people buy products, they go for brands they trust. What has Motorola released in the last 10 years that a huge majority of users trusted? That's right, nothing we can think of.

This is a 'me-too' game in which the OS comes in a variety of free versions for the majority of [lazy] manufacturers, and in an uncertain version from the usual suspect in Redmond to others. The one exception is HP who are hoping to ride on the past popularity of Palm's OS. Another lazy [and forlorn] approach.

What I don't understand is why anyone would buy a product that's already out of date as it tries to catch up with where it's manufacturer believes Apple are at?

Unfortunately Apple is no longer a brand that people can trust judging by the stupid crap they've pulled in the last year. Antenna issues, Wi-Fi issues, removal of AirPrint, lack of Flash in what is supposed to be "the best window for the Internet," and still, in 2011, a complete lack of choice.

Really? Number one rated by consumer reports, 10+ million iPads sold, which was suppose to fail because of "no flash". Or the iPhone with record sales, lines around the block to buy it weeks after launch?

Outside of the blog distortion field, normal people are buying Apple products in record numbers. I'll believe Apple has a brand issue when I can actually goto an Apple store on the weekend and actually buy something in less than an hour. The stores are insanely packed with people, buying, buying and buying.

If the current sales pace is a company in trouble I can't wait to see the financials when they "recover" lol.

No hardcore user would ever think an iPad is worth having over a WinTab or some other kind of Android tablet. The iPad just can't do a fraction of what the other tablets can do. So I suppose there are 10 million people who just want very basic functionality. So what?

Exactly my point. You make sweeping generalizations about Apple and falling out of favor when in fact it is a very, very small group (hardcore gamer/user) that Apple has never targeted as the primary user.

Apple's is not focusing on the needs of pretty much anyone that reads or posts here. They want the huge chunk of the consumer pie that can actually make them money. Hardcore users want a huge checklist of ports, options to modify, hack and make a device their own. That has never been what Apple is about, the don't want the user to even know what any of the tech crap is. They want their computers, phones and tablets to be easy, intuitive and in 3 or 4 years work just the same as the day they bought them.

Very small group?

Is that why Android is dominant and grows over twice as fast as iOS?
Or why Windows has 90% market share?

Ugh. Wanting Flash and the ability to do extremely basic stuff like taking media off of the device, being able to have a filesystem to download things, and proper multitasking isn't 'hardcore.'

Ya... because we all know every Android and Window user has a clue what they are buying? Seriously... That's how you base what kind of user someone is? Really?

Just one thing we all need to remember, and yes the iPad has done great for it's 1st year and got a good years lead before anything really worthwhile will be out as an option.

As of yet, if you want something nice and fancy a tablet, there is really no choice.

I think this when people say things like, well people don't care about flash as it has not stopped them buying the iPad.

Well perhaps they have bought iPads despite this, rather then because this.

If there were other tablets as nice as the iPad but could do things, such as play flash then I'm sure many would have bought those instead.

So can't say a runner is the best runner there is when he's the only one in the race. It's all too early to call yet.

Apple are not known for generally being at the hardware cutting edge, instead being happy to go for for the easy middle ground and make thing that look nice and are simple to use.

They have a years head start. If they let this slip so that in two years time, Android tablets are overtaking the iPad in sales and popularity then they really need shooting for letting their advantage disappear.

I hope Apple/Steve does have a rethink and a re-evaluation of how he wants to play the tablet market and works hard with the hardware people to keep Apple right up at the very leading edge of hardware in this sector.

The pessimist in me says no, they won't. They will go the middle of the road easy route and just try to suck in more corporate money with more closed marketplaces for their products to get richer from the loyal fan base.

I hope this is not the way it goes, and they get swamped by better performing and more open other products over the next say 3 to 5 years. As it starting to happen with Android phones now.

This time next year at least we may have a better picture of how things are heading. But I expect it will be a number of years before anything settles down and a full picture emerges.

Oh of course. Only Apple users know what they're buying.

Nothing could possibly scream 'fanboy' louder.

So Apple makes something which addresses the needs of 10 million people?

I love how you define 'hardcore user' as 'someone who needs something other than an iPad'. It's completely circular.

Android could be growing twice as fast as iOS because iOS already made its huge gains and won't see accelerated gains going forward. If you think Windows has market share simply because of people choosing functionality (and not because it's been bundled with everything since the dark ages and people go with what's familiar) I don't know what to tell you.

For people who need to futz with a filesystem, there's a reason why Apple still sells laptops.

Nothing could possibly scream 'fanboy' louder.

You're the one screaming it in every post. It makes people not take you seriously. Calm down.

Unfortunately your use of the word "Unfortunately" here is unfortunate, mainly because all you're doing is expressing an opinion which is only your own. Even more unfortunate for you, it's also wrong.

Apple top brand satisfaction charts and make record sales year after year. What that means shouldn't need spelling out to anyone. What it means in real terms is cold hard cash in record profits for Apple.

This is an example of the difference between opinions and cold hard facts - which tend to be more relevant in a grown up discussion.

Nicely put. I don't think people compliment others on good post anywhere near often enough. Happy new year to you :)

Agreed.

Really? Because of these things I cant "trust" apple? Every company releases products that have issues out of the box. Does that mean I don't trust any of them either??

And your "lack of flash in what is supposed to be the best window for the internet" comment is just asinine. The statement from Apple is really a point of view. Everyone will have differing points of view on what will be the best experience.

I find myself getting along without flash just fine on the ipad, as well as every other device I own that has flash blocked. My browsing experience is still fantastic. If you want flash - go buy skyfire.

Yea, because you're not screaming "Droid fanboy" at all in this thread.

I don't have an Android phone...derp

Skyfire doesn't work for all sites, and then if it does, it only works for video. What about menus? To use an old example, what if I want to order something online? Pizza perhaps? Oh, that's too bad, the site uses Flash for navigation. Let's play this game online. Oh, that's too bad. It uses flash. The tremendous success of Skyfire ought to tell you that people indeed are missing flash despite saying otherwise on MacRumors.

True. If they want that option, SkyFire is waiting for them. Only videos are allowed, correct, but ordering pizza could be done over the phone or through an app. Same with Flash-based games. Personally, I don't know why you'd even attempt to play them on a mobile device, with no optimization (even for Android phones), but every day, I see more Flash gaming sites making their own app for iOS. The most recent example being Robokill.

Why is everything always about workarounds with Apple now? No flash? Well then just call or use an app (which doesn't exist.) Well gee, that's convenient. Why not do it the easiest way? Just cause Steve Jobs said no? Why not let people install Flash on their phones as per their choice? I'm all for HTML5 growing and everything but, to be perfectly honest, Flash is not dying. Flash runs excellently and does its job well. This isn't 2001 anymore, and Adobe learned some lessons. I suppose Flash runs like ass on OSX, but that's no reason to abandon them forever. I mean we saw how Frash worked on the iPad and it was incredibly impressive and didn't slow it down at all. Steve should have seen this but he's still stuck to his anti-flash decision, and thus will all of the Apple fans. This is unfortunate because, again, Flash is not dying and it seems other competitors like Motorola and Blackberry see this as they are soon shipping out tablets with Flash on them.

Nope. They exist. Not for every restaurant, of course. I don't use Flash, nor see the need. I'm happy without it - not because Steve said no, but because of my own decisions.

Wow! I like the thought out post.
