Let the competition begin!

Although I don't have plans of buying any Android based tablet anytime soon. This is a trigger to raise the competition and a wake-up call to all Android tablet makers. Once they raised the bar, Apple will not hesitate to improve their products and the pricing. It's all good for me as a consumer.

Laguna and other doubters... This is for you

See I do own everything i talk about. ;)

It's no surprise really. Xoom is just a toy for content consumption, there is nothing really you can do with it, there are no apps for scientists, engineers, doctors, musicians, etc, etc. It can only do just basic stuff like internet browsing, videos, music, books, angry birds, etc, so it's functionality is very primitive and toy-like.
Why should I buy Xoom if I can buy an iPad and have a full-blown CAS system for math computations? Or support of audio and MIDI interfaces via USB so that I can use iPad music synthesizers fully integrated into a professional studio? Etc, etc... Android fans are just geeks with empty lives who don't even think that people do anything else besides customizing their home screen with widgets... Real people use apps, they don't look all day at home screen or OS interface...

Lol, I've loaded gingerbread on about 30 droid x phones. If they are using it to measure the number of tablets out there they are way off!

Isn't Gingerbread Android 2.3 and Honeycomb (3.0) is what is on the Xoom?

What am I missing?

I find apple fanboys to be the least informed of their product. Saying things to defend their purchase such as "Its a Mac so of course its better then any PC." or "Its more expensive there for its better." Of course we know that some PCs have the capabilities to be faster then any MAC on the market. (I.E. an enthusiast rig)

And enthusiast rig all the way can become more expensive than the Mac itself. Or you can trick yourself by build your own "enthusiast" CPU and buy a crappy display for it, then say that your rig is much cheaper than a Mac

And don't you think yourself as an IMMATURE fanboy as apple fanboys are?

Because your ID says it all ..

that you're a retard fanboy which also least informed about android product. Saying things to defend his purchase such as "It's an Android so of course it's better then any Mac" or "It's more open open source there so it's better"

Don't forget that Microsoft was a bad copy of Mac OS in the beginning.. Apple laugh hard that time and then as if nobody were looking, Windows became the standard in the computer industry. Even we the Apple fans know for sure Mac OS has always be the best reliable OS to date people stills think that a real computer needs Windows to work properly.
...

Less and less people think this, but if some still do, it's because they are used to using Windows machines at work.

It was business that cemented MS in the OS share race way back when, and with cheap PC hardware, to buy and bring home a system you already sort of knew from work made sense. When you got stuck, you could ask the IT guy at work to help you fix it.

Android does not enjoy such a luxury in the mobile OS race, if you can even call it that. In fact, enterprise adoption of iPhone and iPad has been astounding thus far.

Perhaps in the future, most people will think that a real tablet computer "needs to be an iPad to work properly"...

Maybe it should be put in these words: iOS was designed for the iPhone with a tablet in mind ....

Hard to tell. If Apple had been thinking forward to tablets, I suspect they'd have emphasized resolution independence more. That way, they wouldn't have painted themselves into that silly pixel-doubling corner.

I didn't know the "proposing Linux" part, very interesting - do you have any links on this so that I can read up on it?

Just one link handy, here. An Apple insider's tip to Gruber, about what Tony Fadell (head of the iPod division) wanted.

Regards!

It already is .. the iPad has become standard of tablet pc. Yeah some android-geek or apple hater would say, It doesn't have flash .. but yet it sold out like hot cakes, what's you gonna say huh? It's not apple mistakes for being too good at what they're doing.

Some people out there just hate everything about Apple because they envy it. Actually Apple is everything they ever dreamed of, but they just hate to admit it and ending up hate Apple. Saying things like Apple is overpriced bla bla bla Pathetic

And for people out there who said iPad is overpriced, look at the alternative, it's not much cheaper now, unless you buy those cheapo Chinese-pad wannabe .. which always gonna be "bang" for the bucks, cause you'd end up "bang" those chinese-pads to the wall or table for being too slow and incompetent for what they are

ZING!

It's funny because it's true. :)

Like many who've said before me, I think the difference in sales numbers boils down to simple product execution. In most reviews of the Xoom (and other Android devices), the prevailing sentiment is usually that there is so much potential for Android to blow everyone away.

I daresay, most Apple fanatics would be hard-pressed to argue that the aspirations Google and other hardware manufacturers have are flawed. Most semi-intelligent people aren't against fantastically speced hardware, or unlimited customability, or even...gasp..."openness," but in practice, there still isn't a device that embodies all those qualities WELL.

Yes, there are devices that come somewhat close to reaching those lofty expectations (and many that don't), but in every case, the execution is lacking in one way or another. Either the features are "soon to be added" after release, or the user experience is clunky and unpolished, or the theory of "openness" causes fragmentation and compromised security for the user.

It's been said time and time again, but it comes down to user experience and not just lofty ideas. The disparity in sales numbers is, I believe, due in large part to products not delivering on promises made.

Criticize Apple for leaving things out if you like, but at least they deliver the experience they promise with the features they promise. That's what the common person truly wants in their day to day life. In my opinion, that's what sells millions, not thousands, especially when concerning nonessential devices like tablets.

Let's face it, the "normal blokes" greatly out number the people who frequent sites like these (I include myself), and I think it's pretty obvious that the sales numbers prove this. Apple's going for the masses, and whatever they're doing seems to be working quite well.

haha . Yes real musicians buy an iPad for music creation

Android is going away. Since widgets are less effective than iOS apps.

I guess no company will even come close to even think about being an "alternative" to the IPAD, until

1)They cut the price to at most HALF and not one cent more.

I remember the biggest hurdle for me buying my first mac was the price tag.

Its the biggest hurdle I have trying to get others to look at them.

When you can get a Pc laptop that is "acceptable" for $3-400 I can see the hesitation myself.

With the ipad and the so called competition. I am just in shock, as in I honestly cannot believe the companies pricing these devices are as completely and utterly full of themselves thinking that they have the market clout, and reputation apple has. Its almost like the anti-apple tax. where apple is the one being reasonable on tablet prices (with the exception of memory, where I am sorry but every company on the market is rakining customers over)

2) Offering a full and functional operating system, not a mobile operating system. IF they were offering a full computer os, then I "might" could see them charging a comparable price to apple

otherwise Why would anyone buy something other than apple, unless they were

someone who just liked the look of the device better
an uninformed comsumer
an apple hater
an android lover

short of offering expandable memory at a cost that is not excessive like apples And I am talking a lot of memory significantly more thean the top of the line ipad. as in like 3 times the memory at minimum.
Because lets face it apple just takes us all to the cleaners over Idevice memory.
I really wish they would make a 16 gig device and add a memory card slot for music, and let everything else run off device, but I am stepping a bit off topic.

But I just dont understand it, its like ALL of these companies are actively trying to FAIL, on purpose.

Actually, real musicians do use the iPad. Gorillaz used the iPad exclusively for their last album.

I'm guessing that the reason Apple did phones first is that cell phones were already an established market. Tablets existed, but the majority had poor battery life, and ran desktop windows. They did not sell well. I don't think apple really had any idea if consumers would even accept a tablet, no matter how good it was.
They knew consumers would accept a cell phone, since virtually everyone has one nowadays, so they probably figured they would play it safe and design it for phones first, then once iPhone OS was out there and well-established, they could release the tablet based on the same OS and attract people to it that way. Pretty amazing tbh.

EDIT: Also, 2.5m ipads shipped in less than a month vs 100k shipped in... like a month and a half? Seems like a winner to me. Android does appeal to techies, but i hate to break it to you, the majority of the world is not made up of techies. Plus, there are some techies, like me, who prefer iOS anyway.

13 pages of responses, and about 50 "i have a xoom" claims.

And only 100,000 sold?

I guess we now know where all the xoom owners hang out.

I don't really watch television at all, so I was just wondering if there are many commercials for tablets besides the iPad?

I can't recall ever seeing a Xoom commercial even in passing, although I have seen an iPad commercial.

I've seen a WP7 tablet commercial on my laptop a few times. I wasn't aware anyone was making them, but the ad is really lame and the Windows tablet needs a writing tool to use it and is thicker than heck.

Maybe the Xoom is a joke today, maybe not. If Apple don't work hard about improving the next devices the history can repeat itself this time Apple vs Google.

IPhone is the leader of today smartphone industry.... but Android is taken the masses one by one... be prepared.... be very prepared for the innevitable.

It is interesting, having been a diehard Apple user since the Mac 512 in the mid-80s and defending the platform through the dismal 90s, to see the iPad being touted by Apple fans as the clearly superior tablet because it is dominating in sales, has so much more software than any other OS, and is cheaper.

These are all variations on the exact same arguments Mac-bashers used to make about Windows...it must be better since so many people use it, there's no software available for the Mac and gazillions for Windows, Apple computers are too expensive...

In this case, I do actually believe the iPad is truly a superior product (I've got a 1 and a 2, love them both). But sales figures, apps, and price do not always equate to "the best." Apple needs to remain in the unique position of genuinely leading in all these areas, including quality and innovation.

It's nice for Apple to have high iPad2 sales, and I think that's great. It's too bad the Xoom isn't selling more, although 100k isn't too terrible right out of the gate.

I've seen and hefted a Xoom, and you know what? It's a pretty decent piece of gear. Good job Moto! From a hardware perspective I liked it every bit as much as the iPad2. In my opinion, its only downfall is Android. For me, Android is not intuitive at all. I can deal with that when it comes to traditional computers, but I don't have time to waste with that sort of nonsense on an appliance - I want it to just work, and that's what Apple provides.

Very well said. We need a thumbs up smilie.

Once the Xoom gets its LTE radio, I think it'll find another niche.

In the meantime, there's another, possibly fairly significant, factor going on. For instance:

I and my son-in-law were both originally going to get a Xoom just because of Honeycomb... but ended up going with $200 Nook Colors instead. I wonder how many others went down the same path.
