Its over for FireFox. Safari has already won. And the next version of Safari will make this even more useless, desperate.

In two or three years, it won't even exist.

Do you do stand up comedy?

Because, you know, you should.

I'm guessing this is just a joke guys and gals...

Dude, the glue is for sticking not sniffing! ;)

---------------

Firefox is moving forward for sure. I've just begun a new job and every computer I walk past is running Firefox. Safari is nowhere in site, at least in a Windows based office environment. I can imagine that user numbers of Safari are increasing, but it won't surpass Firefox users.

Just downloaded. I like the new design, but the tabs are a bit dark. I used the color management add-on to enable the new ICC profile support, like Safari has. Apparently it isn't enabled by default because it reduces performance by 10-15% and isn't compatible with some add-ons. Haven't really noticed any problems yet, and my photos finally look right. I still haven't gotten used to Safari yet and think Firefox is better. Been using it since v1 on Windows XP. I had to use IE7 today and wanted to die. FF3 on OS X is nearly perfect.

I wonder if they will end up getting the download record? It is supposed to end 24hrs from the download link going live, which I think was around 4pm EDT?

Buggy - Especially With Ebay

Found and reported various bugs with Ebay

Annoying thing is can't seem to get back to Version 2

Damn

Safari definitely integrates better with Mac OSX but Firefox has a feature which I could never live without: Add Ons!

I work in a Win Xp environment and the ability to use the same browser cross platform is perfect for me.

I'll give you an example of something that is priceless for my use: I am at work, I find a good webpage that I want to keep for future reference, I add a bookmark. When I get home to my Mac the bookmark is already there on the Bookmarks Bar thanks to the Foxmarks Add-On. I love not having to use a webpage to sync my bookmarks, it does it behind the scenes with no hassle.

This feature alone is enough for me to tolerate the quirks about the "not so great" integration with OS X's native theme and use Firefox as my main browser.

However, I admit that Safari looks and behaves better, it's faster IMO. Just go to gametrailers.com (example) using FF3, choose a QuickTime HD video and try scrolling the window while the video is playing. FF3 totally SUCKS at this :D

Me too - especially Flash Block

slowww...

What I have noticed is that 'fire'fox is nothing like fire on my computer.
Hasnt been, and still isnt.

I have a powerbook G4 667mhz and a internet connection that is 512k. (slow.)

Safari opens in 5 seconds.
Firefox first launch is 30 sec.

I always clear cache to keep the speed optimal each time I open, and when I do Firefox is 30 sec. each time. Otherwise it loads in about 15 seconds.

---
Second issue.
The smart bar or whatever - not to smart compared to Safari.
Not saying it doesnt have its merits...but consider this:

When I type a url in safaris web bar it automatically starts to fill in the address. And when I put in "macr" it already puts macrumors in their for me so I dont have to type the whole thing NOR do I have to push the down arrow to make it select macrumors.

Thats pretty smart...you know the spotlight type filling in the blank.

I suppose if they could work out the speed issue, as well as that smart bar issue and then let Flock integrate it into their set up (as Flock is based off of FireFox) I would switch over. (Easier for blogging, etc.)

Until then...its Safari - to bad Apple doesnt put whatever it is that people like from Fox and Flock into the browser. ;)
(or allow as options.)

Peace

dAlen

I haven't noticed slowness, I've found it to be quite zippy. My only complaint is that for some websites, despite me telling Firefox to remember my password and keep me logged in, it has not :(

I disagree. Firefox is an awesome piece of software to have around, because it makes Apple and Microsoft work harder on Safari and IE respectively so as to compete.

Same with OS X and Windows. One without the other would be hell as there's less incentive to do better when no competition exists.

In the end, the consumer wins by getting a better product.

It's even more awesome to actually use, especially the AwesomeBar. Seriously, originally I was ticked off by it for being wide and not auto-completing the URL for me, but after using it, getting used to it, and organizing all my bookmarks with tags... I've come to realize 2 things: the URL bar is the most important part of the browser UI that people interact with and that this is the most well thought out and best implementation of that important piece of the UI because it takes advantage of the new SQLite Library and makes it easy to get back to any page in the user's Bookmarks and History without opening up the Bookmarks or History.

I heard Opera implemented something similar but I haven't read the details yet... although I'm kind of put off by how bloated Opera has become... yuck, it's more like the old Mozilla Suite.

Has anyone noticed that scrolling is not very smooth with FF 3 when doing a "two finger" like I am doing on my MBPro trackpad? It seems choppy.

Then when I do it with Safari 3 it works perfectly. Anyone else?

Gecko scrolls by lines, not by pixels. Therefor, it seems choppy.

If you think Safari will be quicker in the future with Squirrelfish, check out Mozilla Tamarin. It even uses Javascipt2, which Squirrelfish does not.

I still don't like Firefox. It's interface is ugly, it renders web pages in a ugly way, it scrolls weirdly, it draws funny lines around links you click on, and all of its new features are useless to me.

Firefox 3 = Meh.

I use firefox and will use firefox anyday instead of safari.

I hate safari's tab browsing.

Firefox's applekey + 1, applykey + 2 tab browsing function is something I can't live without.
(In safari, it opens bookmarks wtf!)

Heh, I'm quite comfy with IE7. Haven't even bothered downloading Safari yet. I've just never liked Firefox much, not sure why. I don't think the interface ever stuck with me and it looks much too cluttered. I'm also a big fan of speed and Safari still seems quicker (in OSX at least).

Maybe one day.

In comparison to IE7 FF3 is so much nicer. I think the Windows version of FF3 is better than the OS X version especially in regards to the (default) UI.

Command + shift + arrow will go through the tabs.

Can you change a setting in FF3 so that when it loads a page with pictures, for example, it doesn't display the text description of the picture while the picture is loading and then replace that with the picture because it causes the page loading to jerk all over the place.

For me

On OS X it goes Safari, Opera, FF
On XP it goes Opera, FF, Safari

Hmm. I was using a beta of FF 3.0 (I think). I don't recall upgrading to the release version, but perhaps it was automatic and I didn't notice? How can I tell if I'm running the release version? Here's what it says in the "about" window:

I continue to use safari,
I don't download firefox,
because I love this word - safari,
when I read it, I at once remember clouds, white clouds,
when I was a boy, I often watched them.
This reason looks like a joke.

Can people take screen shots like the one I have attached.

Basically just wanna see what the fonts look like for everyone else on post content (i.e. what people have written) as the font is differently rendered compared to FF2.

Thanks

Firefox is bad for the mac, it just doesn't want to be a proper OS X app. The problem is that the developers just don't care about the UI on OS X. So here's my list of things wrong with firefox's UI:

  • Main window:
  • OK, just looking at it, the toolbar buttons are the wrong shape. Apple's ones have a smaller radius around the edges.
  • It lets me resize the window until only the toolbar and bookmark bar are visible, completely clipping the status bar.
  • When you mouse over an item in the bookmark bar, the mouseover effect doesn't even remotely look like apple's (NSRecessedBezelStyle). It doesn't look very good.
  • Why does right clicking the toolbar offer to hide the bookmarks bar, but right clicking the bookmarks bar doesn't offer such an option.
  • The toolbar customisation "sheet" isn't a sheet. It doesn't animate, it doesn't look like a sheet. There's no blurring behind it like with a normal sheet.
  • There's no animations when I drag a toolbar item to the toolbar from the customisation "sheet". I actually had to do it twice because the first time I thought I was doing it wrong because it gave me no feedback that the item would be inserted into the toolbar (which is what the animations do). Obviously there's no animation when items are removed from the toolbar either.
  • Preferences:
  • They still haven't fixed that annoying flicker when you switch between preferences items.
  • The help button isn't native and looks really bad.
  • I shouldn't be able to hide the toolbar in preferences. Also, while I can't resize the window with a resize handle, I can resize the content view by hiding the toolbar. Really odd.
  • The tab control used in the Advanced section has come out of 10.2.
  • The spacing between controls is done very badly. No care has been taken, the controls have just been thrown in there.
  • Toolbars:
  • If I hide the toolbar by clicking on the tic-tac, the gradient isn't changed so the titlebar is left as a light grey instead of the normal apple titlebar gradient.
  • There should be a divider line between the titlebar and content view when the toolbar is hidden.
  • And there's no animation, of course, when hiding the toolbar.
  • I can't move items around by command-dragging them.
  • I can't move the window by dragging the background of the toolbar.
  • The gradient is all wrong. It goes dark grey->light grey->medium grey. It should be dark grey->light grey.
  • Menus:
  • There are no rounded corners on contextual menus.
  • There's no blurring behind contextual menus.
  • Contextual menu items don't flash on and off when clicked.
  • If there's not enough space to show a menu from a <select> popup button, get this, it shows a scroll bar. A scroll bar in a menu! Really leading the industry with innovation...
  • Menus from <select>s also have this ugly black border, the selected items don't have a gradient and there's really not enough space to describe all the faults.
  • Non-Native Controls:
  • Every control seems to get focus when you click on it regardless of whether full keyboard access is turned on or off.
  • The search fields used in the download window and booksmarks window are completely fake. The focus ring around them is fake. They has no 'x' button to clear them. Also, it should be "Search" not "Search..." because it doesn't open a new window or sheet. There's also one search field in the addons window, which has the magnifying glass on the wrong side!
  • The source list used in the bookmarks window has mouseover underlines. This is odd.
  • If I mouse down and hold on a popup button, and then mouse up outside the menu, it should close. It doesn't.

Downloaded and am quite impressed. There are loads of options in FF preferences that Safari could benefit from, however it's slow to open and doesn't feel that much quicker to me, so I'll stick with Safari.

We should all be grateful to have a choice of great free browsers.

(In safari, it opens bookmarks wtf!)
A feature I use all the time (Forum Spy is Command-1) so wtf to you ;)
