I think the range is there because people will get the watches within that range. Not everyone on the 24th. Like one of the previous posters, I've also thought they likely have the bodies and bands separate and will configure them together based on demand.

I wonder if the orders will ship from China direct like some of the iPhone 6's did?

It's naive to think that the media isn't aware of the 24th launch day. There's been significant hype about the Apple Watch just because it's Apple! So I'm going to be highly surprised if the majority of the watches marked 4/24-5/8 don't go out that Friday.

I didn't say they weren't aware of it, of course they are. But they would have to be a bit more proactive to spot one in public, instead of just waiting outside a store with a big queue.

The ranged dates just make it so if you don't get it on launch you won't got bat sh$@ crazy.

lol are you kidding me? If people with mid-May estimates don't get their Watches on the 24th they're going to go bat **** crazy, at least here. To quote Darth Vader, nothing can stop that now.

Ridiculous. Of course there will be. The ranged dates just make it so if you don't get it on launch you won't got bat sh$@ crazy.

Gotta remember it's a watch and a band they need to ship with so many different variations it's probably harder to keep a super accurate track of inventory going out than just a single phone or two with the iphone 6's

If it was a date range of a few days, I could understand this. However, A range of 2 weeks indicates a greater degree of uncertainty from them.

Usually, Apple don't give such a long delivery range for pre-orders of initial stock. The extended estimations usually only creep in once launch day stock is gone.

Which model? I don't think I've seen a Space Grey Sport yet that is being delivered before mid-May.

Blue band Sport for me. Ordered an extra black strap as well. I like the look of the silver sport with the black strap better than the space grey.

When I pre-ordered the iPhone 5 my order date said 9/21-9/25. I got it on launch day which was 9/21.

I'm pretty sure they always give a window rather than a specific date. It is a bit odd that Apple are giving a 2 week window this time but hopefully we will know more soon. I doubt that nobody would receive it on launch day otherwise why promote that day if you can't get it online or in store then?

The OP has some valid points, however I do think people will get a watch on April 24th, a good amount probably. It just depends specifically on what model and band you ordered and what time you ordered it.

I have a feeling the model with the most range of delivery dates will be the Space Grey Sport as it is most popular. The sooner you pre-ordered, the better.

My theory:

If you ordered within the first five minutes and got a range 4/24-5/8, I am pretty sure you can expect a delivery on April 24th. If you ordered 15 minutes after pre-order and received a range of 4/24-5/8, chances of a 24th delivery start to go down, maybe the 25th or 27th?. 30 minutes after Pre-order start and 4/24-5/8 date, chances very low for 24th delivery date, more likely April 30th. Over 30 minutes after Pre-order and 4/24-5/8 delivery, you are lucky it didn't slip to 5/8-5/13 or 4-6 weeks. Chances are extremely low you get delivery on April 24th, more likely April 30th or later, most likely first week of May.

All depends on model and time ordered.

Other factors; Canceled orders.

Bit late for that, apparently. ;)

As evidenced by the comments in this thread.

My feeling - no-one will receive watch on release date

This is an interesting variable. Having to order sight unseen in the middle of the night, I'm sure I wasn't the only person to buy more than one as a hedge to make sure I get the model I like until I was able to try on in store and return the other(s).

As evidenced by the comments in this thread.

If you encourage your customers to behave like a cult (what other companies encouraging the lionising of their CEOs like Apple does, for example) then you can't be surprised if they rise up against you and set your house on fire when it turns out the Rapture you promised isn't going to show up when you promised it would.

Not really. During the iPhone 6/6+ launch Apple was giving away $40 cases and gift cards to people because their shipment was late. I see the range of dates as a way to prevent this.

I thunk we'll see a bunch of deliveries on the 24th. What kind of media coverage would Apple get if on launch day nobody had a watch???

Apple would spin it. Their PR is second to none.

I'm hoping for delivery on the 24th, but they've deliberately covered their asses with the May 8th deadline.

Guys, its still way too early to have this conclusion. Its only been 3-4 days.

Everything about this launch has rung every bell for me re: a typical Apple launch. Nothing has really changed. April 24th IS the date Apple the company has targeted for mass release.

This includes:
- support, both in stores and beyond,
- accessories availability (probably with their external partners as well)
- legal/regulation
a bunch more.

There's a lot that goes into how a launch date is chosen and the effect it has on an organization in launching said product.

The April 10th date is really a service to its customers to give those diehards some time to 'be the first' while the general public will eventually warm up (and stock will be stable). I'm sure if anything, Apple was aware of supply just not being up to demand even when they embarked on the whole project itself! :apple:

I'm posting in this thread so that I remember to say "HAH" when people get their watches on April 24.

I have a delivery window of 4/24-5/8 and an order confirmation of 3:03 EST. I'm expecting delivery May 8th. If it comes sooner I'll be pleasantly surprised. Expecting delivery 4/24 is just asking to be disappointed.

All companies want loyal customers. I don't think Apple wanted anyone to lionize their CEO. Steve Jobs just put himself out there. That was all on him. I think Tim Cook is far more reserved. And, I suspect he's generally an affable guy. Apple doesn't want people to lose their minds over a shipping date. That's rather silly. What's the point? They'll firm up the dates shortly and people will know exactly what day to expect their watch.

I think some people will get their watches on launch day. The probability is decreased for people who ordered a very hot combo (like the space gray sport).

They need to see how many watches they can assemble from cases plus bands. That's why they have a range. They'll likely have a plan in place for how to choose who gets the first watches. It'll factor in the time the order was placed and the purchaser's location (how fast a shipper can send a watch to that address), etc.

I'd like ours on the 24th, but I won't have kittens if we have to wait a little longer.

Perhaps you should make a try on appointment or two before release date. You can at least play around with them.

I've ordered the 38mm space grey sport and got a 4/24 - 5/8 delivery slot. My confirmation email came through at 8:03 thanks to the speediness of the Apple Store app.
