My Gmail Accounts are PUSHING in 3.0

iPhone 3G, O2-UK

OS 2.2.1

Push set to off, fetch set to 1hr.

Seem to be getting emails instantly about 50% of time, with no discernible pattern. Same on 3G/Wifi.

Confused.
 
Okay... 2.2.1 I'm in fetch new data and push is on. I go down to advance and in mail, contacts, calendars with Gmail Mail is Fetch.

Now I can't receive any emails on my gmail account. The inbox is empty, and the internet activity sign spins for ages and finally disappears. But still not a single email in the inbox.

All my accounts are IMAP, and I have Fetch set to Manually.

I noticed if I turn on Push, then none of the accounts can download emails, until I turn off Push.

Gmail however still cannot download emails.

Why did I read this cruel thread!? :(

Easy there cowboy...you may have missed a step or didnt complete the setup. No need to start damming people, when all you need to do is ask for a little help.

First, make sure that you follow the instructions in the link to a "T". You must set it up using "Other" NOT "Gmail" when setting up. You may also have entered your password wrong...accidently...so try retyping it. If you have other problems then ask us...I would be more then happy to help but not if I am going to be dammed for doing it.
 
i just set it up - and i'm getting a sloooooow push. i've got my email set up to check every hour and i've got push turned on (don't know if that makes a difference) but i'm definetly getting the emails sent to my phone prior to the hour passing by. but i'll see one email sent at one time and 10 mins or so later see it show up on my phone. and sometime they show up out of order in terms of which ones show up first. - so i think google must be testing things out. has anyone tested if the auto check is set to manual will they still show up?
 
So some people are getting push and some aren't, interesting, maybe Apple/Google are slowly rolling this out?

Anyways, anyone thinking this was an April Fools thread it wasn't. I seriously am getting push email lol

Still no push though.
 
Let me just bore you all with one more complaint that push is not working.

Settings:
Push - OFF, Fetch - 1 hour. (These are the right settings from what I have read in this thread, even though I think it's ironic that Push is set to OFF for those who have it working)

I wish someone could find a pattern here :(
 
Push ON. set fetch AT MANUALLY. iphone mail's app don't establish a push connection with gmail even knowing that account is nice to push.
don't work. period.
I don't see whats the point by trying differents combinations besides feeding people with placebos.

This thread is funny. Push with GMail doesn't work. Period. What people might be seeing is some sort of IMAP IDLE feature kicking in.
 
There is no push gmail. There will never be push gmail. Push email costs MONEY.

As far as Yahoo push:

It's is as good as ruining your career b/c replying to your boss hours after the luncheon he invited you to is unacceptable.

If you want push, go get a blackberry or fork over $99.

Never is a pretty strong word in the computer industry. I have a feeling google may prove you wrong in the coming months.

They have begun supporting push contacts and calendar, and mail is the only data service left to transition. The reason it works on a Blackberry is because all mail goes through the blackberry servers first. This server then pushes the email to your phone."

Its not a quote from a google employee. And even if its true thats really lame. Those of us that use Exchange from work and gmail for personal won't be able to get this as you can only have 1 exchange account on the iPhone.

Explain how a free Yahoo email account pushes to the iPhone. Now explain how or why Google would not want to offer a comparable service. Also, explain how push costs money while the other aspects of a free email service don't. :rolleyes: You are typically of these forums, I'm afraid - you have NO idea what you're talking about.

yea because i pay for push gmail on my g1. guess i missed that monthly fee, oh wait...
 
im sorry to ask..but how do you know if it is or not? i mean..what does it do like for IM clients if you use it in the background?
 
MobileMe is the best service for push email... hands down. I've never had a problem with it. I get my emails instantly and it's great. I'll place a bid on ebay and seconds later, I'll get the confirmation email. It's really awesome! Even when I buy stuff at the Apple Store, they email the receipt to me... I get the email before I can walk out of the store... as I'm turning around to leave... I get the famous email sound "whing!"

Yes it definitely works good, but the problem I have with MobileMe is that it is very much a one way street. Specifically, if you look at calendars, MobileMe doesn't allow you to use offline software (i.e. Mozilla Sunbird) to view, edit, etc, the calendars. The only solution is to use a number of different software together to actually enjoy the benefits of iPhone syncing calendars on the desktop (without going to me.com), and even that hardly works well at all. So while I'll grant you that MobileMe push works great, I think the basic problem with the service in general is that it is very much a closed environment. Obviously this is partially simply the nature of Apple in general, but for a service that you're paying for, I think one should be able to access and edit its features in a variety of ways, and not simply via a browser (which I still find inferior to a regular desktop application).

That's why I think a lot of people like Google's approach better (sans push, for now). They are very much an open platform in many ways, and each aspect of the system, mail, calendars, etc, works superbly with a variety of clients (desktop, mobile, etc). Since Google's approach is to spread their services as quickly and effectively as possible, they design each service to work in a variety of ways. The result is that the end user enjoys the benefits. That is why I hope that push comes to gmail - while I still use MobileMe, my use of it is very limited because of the confines of its architecture. As such, while I use MobileMe to improve my iPhone experience, I could never see myself relying completely on it. This, I suspect, is why a lot of people are hoping for push Gmail. If Gmail pushes, the iPhone experience is greatly improved, and people can continue to enjoy the benefits of what is, in many ways, Google's superior product suite (precisely because of its compatibility and openness).

Another fact: you're an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about.

I have push on my phone right now - for free thanks to Live@edu and others who are at companies with exchange have it as well. Just because Yahoo's push is unreliable doesn't have ANYTHING to do with Google not offering it. I highly doubt Yahoo's push is artificially being crippled by Apple.

Also, no one was disagreeing with the current situation rather when you said:

Prove the case push e-mail costs any significant amount compared to any other e-mail features offered, please. Oh and are you able to prove there will never be push for gmail? I'll wait.

Strictly speaking, it isn't actually push but to all intents and purposes it looks like push to the end user.
I suspect that this is what people are seeing - GMail accounts are set up the same as any other IMAP account so there can't be some magical push happening behind the scenes: The only logical explanation is IMAP Idle
 
mobile me only works in macs+iphone. catastrofic scenarios have been seen in mixed enviromnents.

I agree, it sounds a lot like IMAP Idle to me. I have IMAP Idle on my windows mobile phone through flexmail, and the behavior sounds very similar. Sometimes the emails are instantaneous, sometimes there is a 2-3 minute delay.
