Completely fair criticism. Do you have any comparison shots you could share? My guess is that Apple is taking all their night mode marketing shots on a tripod to enable longer exposure times. Any time I have taken a night mode shot with my 11P, it has been hand held at 3 seconds and the quality is never that great. I keep meaning to buy an attachment to mount it to my tripod but I never get around to it since I always get a better night shot from my DSLR anyway.

Did you test out anything else with the camera? Does the LIDAR sensor help with night AF and portrait shots?

I am also waiting to see if the Max offers real world benefits from the larger sensor and sensor shift stabilization. If it does, I will reluctantly be going up to the larger size for the better camera (something I thought we had left behind after the 6-8 Plus days). Otherwise, I am going to hang on to my 11P for another year.
I’ll borrow the misses phone today at night and upload some samples the selfie camera nightmode isn’t to great, but yeah I’m excited for the max that’s the one I’m getting

LiDAR does help a lot with auto focus that I can say I noticed that straight away at night

This is probably a fair assessment for someone coming from last year’s model. I can’t get myself to pull the trigger coming from an iPhone 11. There just isn’t that much they can change with these phones every year to justify an upgrade. And that’s totally cool and speaks to how far the iPhone has come. But for those coming from older devices the upgrade is totally worth it.

Thank you for posting your thoughts.

I agree once the phones are in a case (as i assume most people do this) there physically is really no difference to me.

Also and may I remind I have absolutely no experience with the 12 but in theory to me (with my limited amount of research on the subject) it seems as if the MagSafe is essentially wireless charging that already exists on the 10s and up? I can only deduce that it gives a stronger “hold” on the phone and maybe a slightly higher wattage for charging... Would I be correct in assuming this?

— I am not trying to crap on anyone’s new phones as I myself am a tech guy and love all new tech but lately I’m feeling that the “new updated” tech Ive been buying could have been not done due to the SMALL incremental upgrades. What hamstrings me these days is the speed of the WiFi not so much the devices.

I've got an 8+ and I'm contemplating waiting another year. The only reason I may upgrade is the amount of money my carrier is willing to give me if I trade in my phone for the mini. For me, it seems like upgrading comes down to the value of a trade in at 3 years vs 4 years rather than the improvements of the actual phone after 3 years. Decisions, decisions.

I think when the front display looks the same it gives the illusion that it’s the same I wish they did do something different with the display like the notch, all I would be happy is for an option to hide the home bar it really isn’t needed now and ruins my display haha

I would never buy a new iPhone after just one year. The changes are always small.
(Except maybe iPhone 4 and X)

Coming from the X, it is a bigger jump. Display is better (no ghosting), Camera is better, it is noticeably faster.

But i agree with the bezels, they do look bigger instead of smaller and it bugs me a bit as well.

If it is his wife’s phone, he should have said in post #2, I am returning her phone. It makes no sense to call her phone “my phone,” which he did.

There are no pitchforks here. He can do as he likes. I am not bashing him Apple wise or personally. I am done trying to have an honest discussion in this thread.

I don’t think he’s the person that made post #2.

I am coming from a perfectly great X and my 12 Pro is a nice upgrade. Everything looks great and works great. So much better than my last experience when trying to upgrade to the XS Max which never worked for me - terrible connectivity issues with 2 different phones.

For me, I’d still rather have a great working phone than a bunch of new gimmicks and emoticons. I’ll not use the MagSafe charger as I have a 30W fast charger that I use during the day if I need to charge up.

What you are looking for is innovation, excitement, fresh ideas, etc. Etc. You won’t find much with Apple these days, unless you switch to the dark side. Apple has been playing safe for quite a while and banking on the brand rather than innovation.

They would spend much of their time doing marketing research, finding out what new iPhone size they can launch each year, change the edges to flat, come up with magsafe leaving marks on their official cases as a feature, experimenting with battery (just to introduce larger battery next year as a new feature), remove the charger and the list goes on.

If you lower down your expectations, you will be really happy :)

This is exactly what I did about a month ago. ATT had the 11Pmax for $300 off.

I almost did that with the 11 pro too. In the end I’m glad I waited. I know I’d love the 11 pro, but I do like that my 12 is lighter weight (of course I didn’t go pro).

A PHONE is well a PHONE

you’re going to use it the same way as you would any other phone.

These phones aren’t meant to be massive upgrades year on year for most people. The improvements this year was always in the pro max line...like did people not read up on these specs?

A couple of things you left off your list that I think should have been on there in terms of iPhone 12 features:

  • Ceramic Shield glass: A legitimate upgrade in crack resistance over the 11 and slightly better scratch resistance
  • Qualcomm modem: Better reception for anyone coming from an Intel modem
  • ProRAW format: If you're a professional photographer you may appreciate this when it arrives
I would also add that the flat screen is going to make screen protectors way better since they can now be edge to edge, if screen protectors are your thing. I would agree that it's not a huge jump from 11 to 12 but I think anybody with a phone previous to the 11 would benefit greatly, especially in the camera department.

My experience is quite different than yours...I'm seeing a huge difference in speed of 5G vs LTE and better reception (T-Mobile low band). I also love the Magsafe and the faster wireless charging you get with it.

The stuff about the camera from Apple is just marketing hyperbole - presumably you’ve seen it in many previous presentations and should take with a pinch of salt

I could understand some specific concern from a professional photographer with an increasing move to computational photography. Everything being HDR I’m not personally a fan of, and lack of controls in the camera app - but that’s not specifically a 12 thing

Yeah you have a point, when I get the max I’ll check it all again, the biggest update for me is the bigger display I love the biggest one

For me the X to XS was a rather small upgrade but I wanted the 512GB. Most of the issues you mentioned were known prior to purchase. 5G is rough everywhere right now. It will improve. I have a hard time believing a review of the new processor when your wife has had the iPhone for a day. All iPhones look better without a case. Did you do any tests of the Dolby HDR video? Sounds like you should definitely return this and save your money for a more worthy upgrade. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Exactly, agree with your thoughts completely except for MagSafe which I have not tried (and have no interest in trying, tbh).

I’ve probably wasted hours of my life and definitely too much money since iPhone X and other Android phones, with their BS curved screens. SO GLAD to not have to deal with this anymore on the 12 Pro. $7 glass screen protector took a few mins to apply, done perfectly. No more rainbow effect on the edges due to the protectors not covering the curved screen completely. And no more BS $55 screen protector kits from those liquid / UV installation companies, looking at you WhiteStone...good riddance to you and everyone else who makes that crap.

I live in a strong Verizon 5G area and have seen solid sub-6ghz speed over the last day. The big deal about 5G isn’t speed, it’s capacity. Hopefully it’ll alleviate congestion issues people have in certain areas.

I have absolutely nothing else to add except seeing you spell “misses” multiple times in your thread is really jarring to me. Your wife is your “missus”.
