I can't open the damn holder area. I'm using a paper clip which fits in the side hole but it doesn't open!

I didn't get a pin or at least I can't find it if it came with my iPhone 4

^or try that

You gotta use some brute-force, I was at first scared because I didn't want to end up damaging my iPhone. Try it on an older iPhone first and get an estimate on how hard you need to jam the paperclip in (needs to be a small paperclip).

I wonder if the deal is SIMs or trays. I'm on my third SIM and second phone. The odds of that seem a bit long if that's the case.

I pre-ordered from AT&T. I only took it out for the sake of photographing it for this thread (twice). It's never been removed otherwise. I think it's macro that's emphasizing scratches and gaps.

Mine's a pre-order as well, arrived on Wednesday afternoon the 23rd, and my microSIM looks nothing like that one... it's got the standard white plastic all the way flush into the seams of the SIM contact pads itself. Interesting...

I just tried this. My sim contacts were under the edge of the tray too. I cut a piece of electrical tape to exactly cover only where the gold contacts of the sim touched the tray. I went back to the exact location in my house where I had 1 signal bar. I now have 3 signal bars. Unreal, I can't believe this did anything. Tested before and after with a bumper on the phone. I'll keep an eye on the performance outside the house tomorrow. I don't want to jump to conclusions that this helped my iPhone reception without more data. Looks promising so far though!

The only thing that has given me hope is that this issue is not always 'constant'. I have noticed my phone would go from 5 bars to 1 in 10 seconds, yet at other instances it would only drop 1 bar at most being held in the same manner.

Do coins work or keys?

This is what I want to know as well. Jav, or one of the others that this is working for when using your hand and the "death grip", can you guys try bridging the gap on the lower left with a coin or paperclip to see if your signal drops off? If it still doesn't change after that, then I say it's a pretty sure sign of a fix on your phones. On mine, the coin still kills it every time. Then again, it's not that often that I'm holding my phone with a coin or paperclip between it and my hand!

What if...just what if, the actual fix is something being pushed OTA or a change in something on the tower side and is being rolled out area by area. Here we'd be modding our SIMs with mixed results when really it was just a reboot or the phone or re-insertion of the SIM that's causing the reset to take the change.

Yeah, long shot but I watched a LOT of X-Files back in the day. :D

I had success with this.. Now only went from 5 bars to 4 bars minimum.

If this will allow me to play Pandora at work again.. I will be happy. I could play Pandora with my 3G.. but not with this phone..

Although.. with the iPhone 4.. I went through an area yesterday that I ALWAYS lose service.. But not with the iPhone 4. It held it.

This is because the signal from the tower is stronger and weaker compensating or unable to compensate for the problem.

Remember all phones have this fundamental flaw, it is usually overcame at a satisfactory level thought.

The gold part of my sim card, part of it actually sits underneath the metal. Literally touching it.

Is this what needs to be covered?

Can someone please just post a video of your now working phone, with your thumb covering the left seem and monitor signal. Leave your thumb there for 1 minute.

It would be a quick video. Basically anyone with this problem can recreate it by taking a big fat thumb and placing it over the left seem for at least 1 minute, if you can't do that then there is something to this.

Not a faint touch either, just slap your thumb on the seam like you would if you were holding it lefty. 1 video as proof.

Apparently you do NOT want contact as this is what people are reporting is the issue.

I don't have one yet, but I am keeping a very close eye on this thread for when I do get mine.

I was very skeptical when I first read this. However, I have to say I have seen an improvement. Death grip dropped one bar is all. It maintained a call the entire time I held it, in a place where it had dropped many over the last few days. I put a thin piece of paper between the gold contacts and sim tray.

I've been wanting this as well. On the plus side, if you make this video, there is probably a good chance you are going to get TONS of hits.
