I think someone who has the current issue should document (video tape) their death grip signal drop scenario first, and then try this, and then video tape the results after they successfully resolve this problem so the "PICS OR GTFO" people can believe.

Someone get the Broadband and arn in here for this testing!!!!!

Been there, done that, even tried a microSIM from one of the other iPhone 4 models owned by a friend, it made no difference, caused no effect in my own testing hence why I've never bothered to mention it.

If it's a "fix" for some folks, hey, fantastic... but not in my situation. :(

I'll do a before and after video but do we really need to wait 20 minutes?

What does the waiting do?

I had an issue with my iPhone 4 where I received about 20 random "No Sim" errors in 2 days. I got the iPhone replaced. I have heard of many other people having the "No Sim" error pop up as well. This is even more proof that all these problems may be related to the sim. (lol, AT&T can't win)

Man, sorry to hear that. That sim tray and sim are definitely finicky. Had to mess with mine and phone showed no sim until I rebooted a couple of times.

I filed off a small amount on the opposite side so I could move it over. I am unable to say if it's fixed or not though, since I only have the problem at work.

Zhe Wiz

my sim was definitely touching the tray so I trimmed a bit off the top and the corner to so that the contacts are now centered in the bottom tray opening. 10 minutes to go till I reinsert the sim and power on to see if this works...

I wish I could actually get this to work myself. I've found that there is absolutely no room for me to move the SIM card.

I did notice when I got in there and looking at it that one side of the SIM card is touching the frame of the SIM Tray.

I also noticed my SIM card looks like someone couldn't get it to fit and shaved the top part of it off pushing it in, scraping up the AT&T logo.

This actually makes sense.
Is the sim tray touching both sides of the antenna? (I.e one on left one on right) because if so that means when you are bridging that gap you are creating a complete circuit around the phone and back to the sim. Which can't be good for anything.

Wish I had my iPhone 4 so I could help you lot test this.
Godspeed heroes of macrumors. :p

can someone with a sim card not touching the tray post a photo of your sim card in tray?

Not to burst any bubbles but I can't see this being a fix. I had a work blackberry that had a bad SIM tray\holder and when it wasn't inserted properly I would get a "No SIM" error message. I would think that the SIM would work or not work (no in-between).

Do you think that it's because as part of the process you're restarting your phones and by doing so you're connecting to another tower in your area? I read somewhere that the iOS4 attempts to use the "Most Reliable" tower as opposed to the "Strongest". This might also explain why the "SIM solution" is working for some but not others. Perhaps the towers in their area aren't stronger than any other.

I mean, if the "SIM card' solution works for you then great but with my limited knowledge of how it all works I'm a bit skeptical.

FYI -- I simply restarted my phone in room where I can normally recreate the death-grip issue and now I can't recreate it. Not sure what that means though.

That is unfortunate. If it doesn't work for everybody, then we're kinda back where we started again. Oddly, if some people got their issue fixed, but not others, that would seem to indicate that there are at least two separate issues affecting the iPhone's reception. Bad news.

Can anyone who's FIXED the problem post a picture showing the bottom side of their SIM including how the contacts are positioned on the tray?

Keep trying.

I'm not going to do it anymore than I already have, I'm not taking a chance of causing any actual damage to the phone because of my intention to return it. Perhaps if the "fix" is working for others, I truly have a unique and "magical" defective iPhone 4, we'll see. ;)

I just tried removing my sim and then placing the tray back in the phone. No change. Several seconds after holding it in the Stevie zone, my phone loses all bars and I can't make a call or use data.
