The AT&T call volume has increased. My hold time was originally three minutes when I tried earlier and now it's up to 15. I predict the AT&T reps are going to get a memo soon instructing them not to activate iPhones manually...

Yeah, I'm on a 12 min wait trying to speak to an "iPhone activation specialist" They better not expect us to wait 24 to 48 hours to activate. The rep I just spoke with told me they are having "major issues" with activations.

Wow I can't believe so many people are having problems. I activated mne around 2:00 est through iTunes and it took about 10 seconds after it went through the steps. Good luck guys.

its funny that you guys just posted this because i thought of the same thing once i heard there were activation problem. i just got off the phone with att and asked them if i could put my old sym in - they said yes - but to stop by a store at some point to have the sim updated with the new 3gs so they know that i have it - hummm i wonder if there is any advantage to not telling them i have the 3gs?

we're tecno nerds don't tell us we have to wait 2 days to activate our new toys - we'll come up with a way around it!!!!!!!

As I stated in my previous post, I also swapped in the sim from my old 3G into my 3GS after waiting for 2 hours without becoming activated. Now my 3GS is activated with the old sim. I just checked OLAM and it correctly lists my phone as the 3GS and under status is shows activated. Is your OLAM updated with your new phone?

Were you transferred to this "activation specialist" by the rep who answered? I ask because the rep I talked to didn't transfer me anywhere. He put me on hold because he said he was new to the 3GS activations and had to get some additional info, then came back on the line to say that I just had to wait it out.

What worked for me was a soft reset of the iPhone: hold down the Home button + Sleep/Wake button at the same time until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Thanks for the tip, this worked for me even after I turned off and on the phone several times.

You may have to call or chat if you have ported in

Hi. This won't apply to all of you having trouble, but if you are porting over you may need to call or chat with the porting people to activate. I had tried to do the whole itunes thing and was not getting anywhere, then I went to the initial port email they sent me and followed the link. I then went to a chat, she had to call me and I had to accept the terms of the new contract. I then needed to turn both of my phones off. Then she did some magic and presto, chango, ala kazoo, I was up and running.

The specialist just told me I'm f**cked. Said I had to wait 48 hours. This is bulls**t.

Just made the call, no hold time at all... As others have mentioned they stated they had the wrong IMEI/ICCID. I hung up, 3G still had signal turned it off, soft reset on 3GS and... (staring at phone as I type). Still "Waiting for activation." Grrr, was hoping I was going to get to move on with my life...

For iPhone 2G Upgraders

I tried activating my 3G S when I got it around 9:30 Central. I got the same 48 hours thing that many of you got. I left for class at 11:15, enraged that the phone still hadn't activated. When I got back at 1:45, it still wasn't activated. So, I read this thread and I tried lots of things, I think I restarted the phone about 20 times. Nothing was working. Here is how I got it to activate.

I took the sim cards out of the phones and swapped them. My 2G stopped working with the new sim and my 3G S didn't work with the old sim. I then swapped them again and the 2G didn't work at all and the 3G S activated finally. At the end of the day, my 3G S is activated with the new sim. And just to make sure that I did everything right, I checked my account on att.com and it now says 3G S. Hope this helps some of the 2G upgraders.

Just got off the phone with ATT. They transferred me to "Apple Care" with an "Apple Genius" who said "the server is down", and that his manager informed him "people were having problems with activation".

I was told to wait for the activation server to come back. Apparently, it should be no more than 2 hours or so. *rolls eyes*

Anyway. clearly this information is laughable, and shouldn't be taken seriously in any respect.

I swapped in the sim from my 3G into the 3GS, and life is good. I'll carry the new sim around, on the off chance ATT actually does get around to processing my activation.

Got it to activate after taking the sim card out and putting it back in about 3 or 4 times while on support calls. Uhhh, that was ridiculous. Good luck to everyone. Looks like AT&T has been instructed to tell people to wait it out.

I got the same thing after the IMEI/ICCID, wait 10 minutes, hold power button, slide slider to power down, wait 30 seconds, turn on again.

I had the same 48 hour issue. I replaced it with the sim card from my 2G iPhone and it's working fine. I'm guessing at some point it will stop working and I'll have to switch it out for the new one.

my phone is at my home - still at work so i haven't done it yet - but i sold my 3g and am using my old samsung black jack (with the iphone sym card) and on att's site it lists the black jack as my phone - so their obviously getting that info from the phone not the sym card.

Bah. Wish I could say this worked :( I think i'm just going to switch the SIM card for now.

just called at&t their wasn't a very long wait time but the lady who picked up told me that she could not help me. She said "the servers are just so damn packed up you'll just have to wait it out. she recommended that I power cycle my phone every hour and that it should be activated by the end of today.

This hack worked for me.

ok nice got it, so here's what I did:
1. Turn off your existing phone completely, in my case it was an original iPhone.
2. Then make sure your iphone 3gs is disconnected from the computer.
3. Turn off your 3gs
Both phones should be off at this point.
4.Turn back on your 3GS and it should be activated

Hope this helps.

Mine also wasn't activating, but this process made it work immediately. THANKS!

Keep calling

The first time I called I gave them my IMEI and ICCID numbers, she tried a few things and then told me I would need to wait for 48 hours and there was nothing she could do.

I waited 30 minutes.

I called back and got a different very helpful lady who didn't need any information from me. She told me to turn my iPhone off and then back on and BAM! It worked! I asked her what she did and she just laughed and said "a little sumthin' sumthin'!"

Keep trying and you'll get someone who can help.

In step 3 do you just mean press the button up top briefly to turn off, or hold the button and slide to power off like in step 1 for the old phone?
