If the iPhone has been such a software failure, as this thread in a way pertains it to be then why has it changed the face of the mobile industry?

I believe Apple couldn't have executed the iPhone any better than they did and now they are gradually improving on it. People on here expect them to be able to trowel on the features and not end up with a mess. Its just plain silly.

And if the software is so great why do apple keep updating it ?, people have been saying how great the software is for ages, would you still like to be on version 1.x

It might be totally differnt where you are, but people I know just laugh when the iPhone is mentioned nowadays because it has so many limited/missing or poor features.

Version 3.0, which improves things might hopefully make people change their impression of it.

I really wish the iPhone UI was similar to the Pre's. iPhone UI is kinda boring looking and rather simple. When I jailbroke my iPhone, the first thing I did was change the AT&T logo on the taskbar to that new one with color.
Wow dude. *Whoosh* Do you hear that sound? That is the sound of the whole point of simplicity going right over your head. The iPhone is meant to be a smart phone for "the rest of us". The UI is designed to work well as not only a smart phone for consumers but also to work well as an iPod. Did you notice that the iPod touch and iPhone share the same basic UI outside of phone and SMS functionality?

If I wanted a complicated business phone that is mainly focused on email, then I'd get a Blackberry. If I was obsessed with features, I might get a Nokia. But since I actually work in the technology sector, I don't give a rats arse about geeky crap like that when I'm not at work. I like to keep things simple while off duty.

I gave a number of phones from Nokia, Samsung a try in the past but they were crap and did not work with my mac. I like the iPhone because it serves as a phone, my iPod and a decent replacement for carrying around my personal laptop with me on business trips.

One final note. I think that intelliscreen is stupid. Why would I want what amounts to an outlook today broadcasting to everyone who sees my lockscreen what email I have waiting? Isn't the whole point of the locks screen to keep things private? It also is a horrible waste of battery with all of those background processes running and I've heard of people having to restore their iPhone after two jailbreak hacks conflicted with each other.

I would actually be delighted to still be on 1.1.4. Was completely solid and did everything I wanted it to.

I suppose these people who are laughing have vastly superior phones because they can send crap quality MMS photo's to each other and copy and paste the odd bit of text. Suppose they also have an even better mobile software market than the App Store and also have full support to iTunes and Apple's firmware update ecosystem. Bet they are enjoying a far superior user interface than true multi touch on a capacitive screen as well.

In the end whatever floats your boat but I would say that the iPhone is nothing to be laughed at.

At least they can send pictures, currently its not possible to send a picture to another mobile phone using the iphone

IMO, the app store is pants, its full of crap and the only useful things are what should be on the phone anyway.

what is so great about multi touch screens ?

Its laughed at because it is missing so many things that are standard on nearly all other phones

If you hate it so much and know of a much better phone then why do you have a 16GB 3G iPhone and even further an iPod Touch? Seems a bit backwards to me if you know of something much better.

I guess I too am overlooking the intention of the iphone which probably means I am not part of "the res of us" crowd.

From your viewpoint I imagine you don't have a jailbroken phone

I have the first gen ipod touch as I use this in the car and it works perfectly, I have no complaints about this.

I am half way through a contract with the iphone so cant change this at the moment without spending money

If Apple (in general) showed any kind of care for the uk then i might change my views

Not a great deal has changed since the 3G was released. You would have known what you were buying into then, so how come it is such a fail device now? Your logic doesn't make sense to me.

I really cannot see where you're coming from. The only thing that makes the iPhone browsing experience better than the Nokia browsing experience on the 5800 is that the iPhone has a capacitive touch screen, which is much more responsive - you don't have to be quite as precise when hitting buttons, etc.

You are right, there is practically no difference.

Apart from the awful fonts on the Nokia..
... and the appalling navigation...
... and the lack of anti-aliased text and imagery ...
... and the shocking bad scrolling..
... and the inability to zooming with an arbitrary zoom factor...
... and the ultra sluggish screen refresh rate, thanks do doing all the work on the CPU instead of a GPU.

Apart from that. There's barely any difference in the user experience. If the Nokia *did* had a capacitive input device, I am sure it would would solve all of these problems.

I don't think I would want every feature under the sun on my iPhone? Why?... Because that's what makes the iPhone so popular. It's easy to pick up an iPhone and learn all about it without having to read a manual. It's so easy to use and the interface moves rather quickly (unless you've jailbroken and added a bunch of background stuff) and I think that's why people like the iPhone. I don't think Apple is claiming to be innovating with this 3.0 software. They're just IMPROVING on what they already had. This is how Apple operates.

If you don't like it... move on. Sometimes I get frustrated with my iPhone, but I know it won't get better if I buy a different brand. I'm always going to be happier with an Apple phone.

I don't get the obsession with MMS. About the only advantage MMS has over email is the fact that AT&T will make more money as they can charge for each MMS when email is unlimited under the data plan. And now with all the other native social apps like facebook and twitter, MMS has become even more obsolete.

Time to let it go and leave MMS in the 90s where it belongs.

I think the problem people have with using email is that if you're out somewhere and you spot a really funny picture and want to send it to your friend who doesn't have an iPhone (I know right... why are they still your friend if they don't have an iPhone...hah!) but, they have a regular phone with no email. I've actually sent people photo emails before and then I have to go back and text them saying "Can you check your email when you get back to a computer... I sent you a picture". Wouldn't you rather just blast the photo straight to their phone so they can see it right away or am I way off?

Its having the option to send crap photos, its the simplicity of cut n paste (especially when you have no options to: for example, forward a text message from stock sms.
There are also numerous software applications available to the numerous host mobile manufacturers. Many of these cell phones also connect as drives to home pc to allow straight file swapping (drag n drop documents audio/video) and in many cases spport multiple file formatts, minimising the need for faffy video conversions etc. The interface and screen of the iphone is in no doubt stunning but again without the ability to update it can look tired after time.

some of the above are expected with 3.0 but why take so long to perfect some standards? in some cases it will be little to late.

I have never came across anyone who has laughed at my iphone...in fact the oposite folks will literally drool over it....But it doesnt stop me getting bored with it at times:eek:

Iv no intention of swapping tho...I cant be assed, and i payed top dollar for it.

Good job none of you know where i live...Right :D Id be toast for such a post.

Exactly the issue, since it has been released not much has changed.

*There are still bugs and missing features

Hopefully most are resolved in 3.0

The other advantage is that t works, email to mobile does not

Remember the iPhone is available in multiple countries, what works in some doesnt necessarily work in others, the iphone is not just available in the US

I'm pretty sure if you have mms you can also send that picture to an email and not a cellphone number. Apparently, the contrary is also possible if you're not on O2 but that's not apple's fault.

And that is all most of us are saying.

Which is far enough, and I agree :)

There just seems to be many people who think the phone is perfect (going through each software version)

If Apple thought the same then they wouldn't keep improving it.

no matter how perfect the phone is or how many features it has, most of us would be able to find something to complain about :D

the core features in 3.0 are all features that the iPhone should natively have had when they released it. Just like our phone never had copy/past, video, mms, etc. And yes I know thats all coming but thats small stuff.

Better late than never.

- Those "awful fonts" look the same as the iPhone fonts to me - seeing as they both use the same software to render pages.
- By "appalling" navigation you mean clicking in an address bar to enter a URL, using a back button to go back through the history list, ie. like every web browser ever made?
- Scrolling is acceptable. Would be better with flick scrolling admittedly. Fortunately flick scrolling has been implemented in the N97 :D

With your other points, I really do not have a clue what you're talking about. I have had a much better experience browsing on the Nokia with 3.5g than I did on the iPhone with 2.5g.. if the browser was as bad as you say then a little speed bump wouldn't make the browsing experience that much better.

MMS is definitely not obsolete. Not everyone has a smartphone that is capable of sending and receiving e-mail. Smartphones are popular, but its not to the point where EVERYONE has one now a days.

That is the poit tht is being missed imo. Whether or not its obsolete its instant unlike email, until apple can figure out push. Another issue Apple is struggling with

I have MobileMe and I get my email pushed instantly, sometimes I get it a few seconds faster than on my mac. Apple was struggling with it when MobileMe came out but it works really good now... Unless you're confusing Push email with Push notifications but that's totally different.

Which is far enough, and I agree :)

Nobody here is saying that the iPhone is perfect, nothing is. But it is really good. Apple keeps improving it because nothing is perfect, there's always new features to add, things to improve, new hardware to support... That doesn't mean that the iPhone's software isn't good. That means Apple tries to keep it updated and always making it better.

But it does annoy me when people complain about the iPhone so much. I mean, if the iPhone is missing so many important features, why did you guys buy it? If other phones have all the features that you want, then sell it on ebay and buy one of those better phones. Why don't you actually do something instead of spending so much time in forums complaining about it? I just don't get that mentality...

And seriously, MMS, copy & paste, tethering... IT'S ALL COMING IN A FEW WEEKS!!
