People on this board have become nasty and rude. While you may not agree with the OP's POV you should still be respectful. And it's very ignorant to say that he is saying this because he doesnt have an early or full upgrade.

Seriously. WTF happened to this forum? I appreciate sarcastic snide responses as much as the next East Coaster but things seem to be getting pretty ugly and personal far too often.

The more I think about it, the 3GS may serve me just fine. Yes, the screen is better, but at least I am given the comfort of how fluid the OS flows on screen on the 3GS, compared to other devices on the market. The 3GS isn't even that bad of a device compared to a lot of Android/smartphones out there.

HD video and camera? I could care less about since I really don't take much photos with a phone camera. If I do, it will be a quick photo, which doesn't need the huge megapixel count anyway (megapixel does not equal quality). Much of my pictures and night pictures come from my Nikon, which then is edited to fit the iPhone screen.

However, the iPhone 4 design aspect is really nice, but that's just for eye candy

FaceTime? I barely even video chat with anyone on my MacBook to begin with and I do not know much people that can FaceTime with me since they won't be getting an iPhone 4, my friends usually carry Sprint phones or BlackBerry.

Gyro? The food? Just kidding. Well, I do play games on my iPhone, but not enough to warrant the new accelerometer use.

Dual mics. That's a biggie for me, but I'm young and texting is the way many, if not all, of my friends communicate, except for my lady contact.

New glass? Cool, dropped my 3GS a few times, no scratches. New glass seems like a great design and I am sure it will get better in iPhone 5

Battery? This is a big one for me. Even though my 3GS works perfectly fine throughout my daily usage (usually down to 40% at the end of my day 9AM-9PM), the iPhone 4's better battery looks great, but the difference comparison on Apple is somewhat minimal.

At least I still get 4.0 on the 3GS along with the excellent multitasking usage and the folders. I am grateful for that.

This wasn't meant to be a rant, just my opinions on why the 3GS may still be good for me to skip this year's model.

But, you best believe that I will be first in line for iPhone 5 or whatever they call it because my full upgrade will be ready by then. Given this year's specs, I will expect much better features next year along with a new OS.

Way to rationalize your ineligibility for an upgrade! As for the rest of us, we'll have fun with all of the new features! :)

I will be skipping the iPhone 4. I have a 3GS 32GB and it works just fine. I sort of wanted a 4G ( I know calling it this annoys some people but it is shorter to type) but I also want an iPad. I can afford to buy both if I want to and my 3GS is not under contract and is factory unlocked so that is no consideration. I just can't see putting over $1,500 to have both devices, which is part of the reason perhaps that I am able to be in the position to afford both in the first place.

For those questioning that figure iPad is $825 and the 4G is likely to be around $1,000 unlocked where I live. The 3GS I have was around $900.

My reasoning to skip the 4G is after I get my iPad 64 3G I don't see myself using an iPhone to consume content much. Many people who have bought an iPad have said their phone collects dust now. There are some useful things about the phone over the pad, as it is more portable. For example good for GPS on the go, surfing the net and checking email.

I don't think I need a faster chip or a retina screen to do these things. Will I really be blown away by the screen when I am opening maps? Will the processor amaze me when I send a text?

So the only use I will really have for an iPhone is when I am on the go for simple mundane tasks. I can't see watching movies on it if I have a device with a bigger screen.

Am I crazy or would people here rather have a 3GS 32GB and iPad 64 3G or just a 4G if given the choice? The thing is the 4G doesn't give that much new functionality as compared to the iPad when I look at it that way.

Idon't get it?

I don't understand why 95% of you are *****ting on the OP for his post?

I'm eligible to get this phone, but I'm going to skip out on it, why? Because most of the features I was expecting and wanted were not present. I honestly feel the best thing about the phone is the look... the new OS is still out for jury in my opinion... but most of you are acting like the arrogant and pretentious apple fans that the media, and non-apple users stereotype Apple users as... it's embarrassing.

Can't anything that apple releases be underwhelming or just not that worth it to some of you?

Jesus, it's hard to read through these forums sometimes.

*** back on topic.. *** I agree 100% with the OP. Most of my friends who don't have iPhones are just going to get the 3GS at a low price and put the new OS on it, and I think that's the best thing to do until a significant iPhone upgrade releases.

If I had just purchased a 3GS last year I would probably be hesitant to upgrade as well, but since I have a 3G and skipped the 3GS I'm definitely doing it. The upgraded 5MP camera and HD video is really what's doing it for me though. I never lug a camera around and it will be nice to be able to take a print quality picture when I want to without an extra device to lug around. Plus my 3G has been feeling a little sluggish now a days.

All in all I'm very excited to finally be upgrading!

the resolution is now 960 by 400 pixels, up from 480 by 320 in all previous iPhones. That more than doubles the screen's pixel density, taking it from 160 dots per inch to 326. (By contrast, the iPad's screen is 132dpi, and Verizon's Droid Incredible is 252dpi.

I'm skipping the iPhone 4 for a couple of reasons.

First I don't want to reset my contract expiration to two years. I figure that when it expires next year, I'll have plenty of choices in front of me, be they iPhone or android.

Second, apple has been more focused on getting guitar hero, and other games then adding other features that I may want.

Thirdly, If my current phone is satisfying my needs why spend the $$ for a new one (which I'm eligible to upgrade)

I agree with much of the OP's reasons, gyro, face chatting, etc Most of it is just eye-candy/superficial stuff

This.

I like the new iphone 4. I like the new look, and I like the new features in OS4. However, the new features, as impressive as they are, are not enough to make me upgrade from my current 3GS. The 1-year differences, from model-to-model, have never been enough to make me upgrade. On the other hand, the 2-year differences have been enough, which is why I'm currently upgrading every 2 years. And, before the haters crawl out from their basements, let me say that I am currently eligible for the fully-subsidized (lowest) upgrade price. Given the new features that *I* would use (better screen, faster processor), I can't justify spending the money, even if I did sell my old 3GS on ebay (which I don't like to do). As much as I'd love to have an iPhone 4, I'd rather spend the money on something else and get next year's model. :D

Of course, if someone wants to rush out and buy the iPhone 4, go for it. It's looks like a great phone. However, please stop bashing those of us who don't; it just makes you look like a tool.

I agree with the OPs reasoning. iphone 3GS is such a great device, it's hard to top.. I am eligible for the full upgrade ($199 price) and will most likely purchase being I can turn around and sell 3GS for similar price. I would not pay the full price given my satisfaction with the current phone either. I really like the new design and form factor of iphone4. I would say this is the most appealing new feature to me over facetime, retina display etc..

FYI, I'm eligible for an early upgrade, but don't see the need to upgrade. I thank all the constructive criticism that people are posting.

you dont want to upgrade to the best phone on the market? hello? do you have mental problems?

Well you have to admit, this update was substantial. I'm a fan of the design minus the seams and everything else they implemented. But I, like you, don't see any reason to upgrade (especially since I have more than a year to go on my contract), so I'll just stick to the 3GS. I think 5 will be the number for me too.

Seams? Did you even watch the keynote? Do you even know their FUNCTION?!?!

I agree with many of the points here and the points that the OP addressed. However, I don't believe you should discount these new features so quickly. While I'm personally holding out with my Nexus until LTE rolls out, I do believe that there will be certain killer apps that utilize the functionality of the new iPhone4 to its fullest extent.

*face palm* If anyone would read my previous post about the thread being a mistake, then this thread should stop having posts haha. I am getting the iPhone 4.

I skipped ALL iPhones so far, because of the low res screens and less than nice and BRIGHT display I get with my crappy Windows Mobile Xperia X1, but of course I'll now be getting an iPhone 4. I've been waiting years for HD iPhone :D

If I had a GS, I might skip this one as well. My wife uses the original iPhone and I use a Windows Mobile 6.1 device, so I'm thinking that we will both probably upgrade.

I got the 3GS last year and now I'm not sure if I want to upgrade for similar reasons. I don't even use my phone very much anyway.

You guys realize that the iPad and iPhone 4 running on the A4 chip is noticeably faster than the 3GS?

When I sold my 3GS to get the iPad 3G, it couldn't believe how much snappier it felt, even with the all the new real estate the iPad has. The animation is fluid. I know the battery is big on the iPad, but the A4 is supposed to be a champ at power management, so the iPhone 4 is going to take advantage of that as well.

FaceTime is icing on a really good cake, but I would have just been happy with a front-facing camera to blog with. I'm sure Skype/Fring/Knocking Live would have come out with a similar solution if Apple didn't.

I'm happy that I have multiple lines on a family plan with expirations all over the place. I'll be able to upgrade myself, my wife, and help out a friend to upgrade their 3GS to a 4.

But what else can you put into an iPhone hardware wise? Those of you who are not upgrading, what else can you improve in the next couple of years apart from maybe an even better camera and a faster chip? If something big come out OS wise, then the iP4 will take it. So if you are legible for an upgrade then I don't see why not seeing as it's barely gonna cost you anything?

And I will be getting the iP4. Simply because it's a new Apple phone and I love everything about it. Ha. (yes I'm a fanboy xD)

I don't own an iPhone, and I will not buy the iPhone 4. However, for me, it's because of the new design. I hate it, it looks so chunky. The 3GS fits the palm so nicely, but I guess the iPhone 4 will not (this assumption is based on my experience with the 1st gen iPod touch).

It's also funny to see how many of the people now making snide comments in this thread didn't like the new design when it was leaked, but they love it now

Great, thanks for sharing. I'm sure you will influence one or two people.

The rest of us will let you know how much we like ours.

LOL...It sounds like he's trying to rationalize his decision.

(My point is when I skipped the 3GS, I didn't come on here to tell people WHY I didn't want it. After all, why should I try to convince myself. It was a rational decision based on cost (I was not eligible to upgrade) vs improvements.)

I had no problem from the outset with the design.

You're making some assumptions not based on reality or experience.
