Interesting that you know exactly what all those forensic and security engineers that Apple has hired are working on, or will be working on in the future. What Apple knows, and what their store employees are allowed to tell you, are two completely different things.

And even if Apple isn't looking, app developers are already looking. A few app developers of popular games have already collected huge lists of the UDIDs of jailbroken devices (it's easy to "phone home" a lot more of your personal information from a jailbroken device!). At least one developer has suggested sending all such lists in to Apple.

ianaae.

this is a worthless post .. forensic and security engineers.. You are stupid..

Apple is not going to bring forensic and security engineers to check out anyones phone who they think is jailbroken.. that would be a huge waste of money.. and so what if they found jailbroken ****... what are they going to Sue the person who jailbroke.. Hell no.. apple would be in the news and get MAJOR criticized for doing so and would lose business,, the most they will do is void warrenty.. and just to let you know since i have had my iphone 3g and 2g i have jailbroken i have had to send back many times and each time i restored my iphone .. and they replaced it..your argument is stupid ,..you have no proof. of being able to get more info off a jailbroken iphone..your speculating.. show me a ton of people whos iphones have been "hacked" into and their persnal information was let out.. you cant.. so just stick with the facts and not your opinions of jailbreaking. cause obviously YOU have no idea

and what about the quality of apps on Cynthia, etc?

The quality of most apps distributed through Cydia is excellent. You have the option of two different video recorders and both record audio as well. One is free and the other is a $20.00 app. Tethering has about 5 different choices of apps, winterboard is the standard for themeing. This is of course is just a few of the apps available. Overall the apps offered over Cydia are up to par if not better then Appstore apps. As the community grows and more and more developers add their products the overall quality grows as well. I can not imagine going back to a stock phone. But this is just me.

I've been timing how long it takes for some apps to load on my JB iPhone:

Camera: 4s
SMS: 3s
Settings 3s
Mail 1s
Contacts 2s

My iPhone has Winterboard (for Homescreen Notifier, no theming) and SBSettings. If this is lagging, then I don't care considering the extra functionality that I get. The only app that takes longer to load is Camera, and that happened even before jailbreaking.

EDIT: I just uninstalled winterboard to see if I noticed a difference and I don't. The apps take exactly the same time to load and my iPhone feels as responsive as before. But maybe it's because I don't use it for theming.

Speaking of jailbreaking, how's that experiment I proposed coming along?

It's not, I don't possess (nor profess to) the aptitude to conduct something like that.

My iPhone is jailbroken still from yesterday (it's 10.07am Sunday Eastern Australian Time) and I have Carrier logo, notifier, 5 icon dock installed so far.

I'm really liking Notifier. I haven't had time yet to load more things. I haven't noticed any lag yet either. My apps are opening as fast as my wifes and sons iPhones that are stock (never been JB'n).

Any suggestions of what else to load?

Lag seems to be introduced through Winterboard and large themes. Basic themes may slow down some processes by a second or two but extremely minor.

Suggestions for good apps:

1: Clippy for copy / paste
2: pdanet for tethering
3: Bosspref for respring and fast reboot
4: Cycorder for video recording

May I suggest you either SSH into your phone or use iphonebrowser via windows and delete installer totally. It is crap and nothing compared to Cydia. Some people have commented it does take up some system resouces so it is be a good idea to just delete it.

Noticing lag.

So far the slide to unlock doesn't seem as smooth and it hesitates at the end.
And scrolling is slightly laggy.

I think I'll be back to stock in another hour or two.

Of course you're noticing lag. You have stuff installed that actually improves the iPhone experience. That will inevitably cause lag.

Frustrating, isn't it?

thats like running the aero skin under vista or running the basic skin.

of course the aero skin makes it slower but its a lot nicer

i have yet to figure out why we are debating on whether or not to jailbreak.

if you want to jailbreak do it

if you dont then dont.

Back to stock and a nice responsive crisp iPhone.

Hopefully thats my last foray into JB'ing for a long time. I can see why some people like it, but that lag is just dreadful for me.

I really did enjoy that notifier bar though!

I'm tempted to jailbreak.

If only to play with SwirlyMMS, clippy and Cycorder. Getting notifications on the lockscreen would be nice too.

I think I can live with Beejive's push email notification to not be tempted with backgrounder (seems like backgrounder is a battery hog when turned on constantly). Rather wait for Apple's solution, if it ever comes :)

Just got my iphone so I'm in no rush. But I do see the benefit of jailbreaking if only to make up for the things Apple left out or didn't get right.

Try it. If you avoid MobileSubstrate and apps that depend on it, my bet is that you won't encounter any performance issues (that is to say any more performance issues than the 2.x firmware already has...)

To Jailbreak or not to jailbreak?

After reading through and participating in this thread, I decided to give jailbreaking another go!

Check out my blog here for my findings!

Just to sum up my post, I am back to happily being in jail! The stories about the soap just ain't true!

Gotta' agree Cydia is a PITA.

And a lagging iPhone sucks big time.

It's a shame cause there are some handy apps, but for me the cons far outweigh them. I've tried every which way as well. Hopefully fingers crossed either Apple will allow more things into the app store or improvements will come from the jailbreaking crowd who writes the software.
Or the next gen iPhone will have a lot more grunt!

Too bad that blog makes it sound as if Cydia is competition to the App Store, which at no point did it ever intend to be.

I just have no clue what you people are doing to create this supposed lag.

I run:

Irealsms
PDAnet
cycorder
open ssh
winterboard with a basic theme
boss pref

And I have zero lag. The app's take exactly as long as my wife's stock phone to open.

Again, comparing Cydia to the App Store is another silly example of misinformation. Cydia is for the distribution of software that is 90% shareware or community based. Cydia is not an App Store. It is just a GUI tool for installing apps that Apple does not agree with for whatever reasons.
