I was jailbroken until yesterday. I restored to original because of lag and I agree it is a hassle to reinstall all of the tweaks when a new firmware comes out.

The thing I miss the most is the ability to change the background from black to something else and the ability to change the icons.

I wish an app would come out in the app store or that Apple would ad the feature to handle this. Why Apple insists on black is beyond me. It seems to me that Apple could easlily add a setting that would let you assign a wallpaper to the background.

Wow this thread is going strong. I am still jailbroken, but happy to report no lag. Then again I don't have winterboard (found way around it) and no crappy buggy apps. Maybe I'll restore just because I can.

You have some good reasons for not jailbreaking, but it basically comes down to: "Will you use it enough?"

There is nothing inherently wrong with Jailbreaking or staying Vanilla. The real decision needs to be if you care enough about things like:

Video Recording, Themes, Terminal, Backgrounding, Status Notification and the like to Jailbreak. It's easy to do, it's safe, if you are minimal with your installed apps, you have nothing to worry about.

Also, I don't know if anyone said this already, I didn't want to sift though all posts. http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/ DiskAid doesn't need you to be Jailbroken... If someone found your phone, JB or not, they could get root access.

Having jailbroken for the first time a few days ago, I'm convinced the people who are reporting lag are the same people who report each new firmware version as being "snappier".
If there is any lag it certainly hasn't been noticeable to me, some of these posts give the impression that something that used to take 2 seconds to open now takes 10!
If you have no reason to jailbreak then don't do it but if something takes your eye give it a try and see if you experince any of this supposed lag.

It really depends on what you install dude! I agree that it is totally down to the user's own preference as to whether to jailbreak or not! But it's just not for me!

i have yet to figure out why we are debating on whether or not to jailbreak.

if you want to jailbreak do it

if you dont then dont.
I was wondering this myself. Both camps are firmly entrenched in their belief and it seems almost pointless to argue about it. So goes the old line from the movie War Games: "Interesting game, the only winning move is not to play".

5. I like to know that if my iPhone is running slow or buggy, it's Apple's fault. (I don't need to be wondering if it's from a third party hack or patch)

My biggest worry and fear EXACTLY...I like to be able to blame others for the problems in this kind of situation. I'd be really upset with myself for slowing down or bugging my phone because i decided to jail break!

Get back to us with a report a bit further on down the road.

I agree with everything you said.

+1 :)

Couldn't agree more! I jailbroke mine for about a week and than restored to stock settings. The lag with turning it on and trying to use SMS was absolutely horrible.

There's not enough pro's to JB at this time. (In my opinion... however I am not against it if someone chooses to... especially to sell unlocked on eBay, Craigslist or anywhere else ;))

Yeah the lag is such a bummer. There's some handy apps that you can have only on a jb'n iPhone, but like you, for me the cons outweigh the benefits.

I guess there should be an anti-jailbreakers group too.

My iPhone must be special because I have no noticeable lag. What a bummer. Aren't I lucky for having a special, magical, lag-less, jailbroken iPhone?

Hey, I've asked before for the experts in this thread to help me and walk me through the steps so that I too can have a non lagging jailbroken iPhone like they do.....alas no one as yet has been kind enough to help me.

Somewhere in this thread I posted what I am running. You can add Clippy to the list.

Actually, how many apps from the app store do you have on your phone? I remember people debating whether having too many apps caused lag on non-jailbroken phones.

I have an older thread that shows what I did.. just search for threads by me. My iphone is jailbroken and I have no lag because I don't use winterboard but found a way around it. Not sure if that thread would help, but I thought I would throw that out there. I found not having winterboard, mobile substrate and that stuff on my phone eliminated any lag. The thread talks about being able to customize (somewhat) without having to rely on winterboard for themes and such.

-apologize for plugging a thread I created.

Not a bad idea actually Mike. Maybe I could even start up my very own;)

I've sworn off JB'ing forever! I was out of jail for the last 30 hours and was hopping along like a three legged dog. Now I'm all nice and comfy and locked up with Bubba in the bunk above me......and unfortunately lovin' it :apple:

It's pretty easy actually. If you don't use any MobileSubstrate apps (and if you don't have MobileSubstrate installed), you're unlikely to experience lag (barring doing something stupid, like running a ton of background daemons, etc.)

That's it. That's all the magic there is to it. Of course you insist on ignoring this detail and bitch about how "jailbreaking would be great if it weren't for the lag", so some of us get a little frustrated with your whining. Either you've ignored the *constant* reminders of the performance problems that MobileSubstrate apps tend to have or you're deliberately misrepresenting the facts. Not sure I like either one.

As I said before, my past challenge still stands. If you can prove that jailbreaking itself creates noticeable interface lag, I will happily retract every single one of my comments to the contrary. So far you haven't taken me up on this, and I can't help but wonder why. It would seem like any easy way to establish that you're not full of it, no?

Your totally right ppc750fx. There is no lag if you don't install apps that use up the iPhone's memory and cpu. (MobileSubstrate apps)

The reason why most people jailbreak is for added functionality such as video recorder, tether, copy / paste, and so on which do not slow down the phone.

As far as orangedog goes I think anyone with some intelligence in this discussion can see past his drama. I hope everyone is well.
