Does anyone know how to view the running processes on a jailbroken device so I can see if just the act of jailbreaking installs any running daemon's. I can re-jailbreak and do some investigations.

not true

The phone simply works more efficiently in regular mode. Jail breaking does cause lag.... IMO

Thats not necessarily true. My phone works better then ever after jailbreak. And I have a ton of new features.

Sorry I don't know how to run top processes command on the iPhone. I do know you will need terminal or something. There is in app in Cydia for this I think.

Yea, open Mobile Terminal and type "top" without the quotes. BAM!

Hmm. Thanks, but last time I was jailbroken, I tried to use top, nut nothing happened. Then again, I tried the command over SSH, not Mobile Terminal.

i won't can't jailbreak because i use a company iPhone but there are certainly some functionalities that i'd like to have in the stock phone

one that is driving me nuts right now is the impossibility to delete specific calls from the 'recents' list.
it seems such a trivial thing to add.

the second one is the impossibility to organize the icons in folders.

I did some research on my iPod touch. It was previously unjailbroken running stock 2.2.1 and I took this screenshot after a reboot. I took multiple screenshots to get all of the running processes in there. See below:

Before Jailbreak.jpgIMG_0086.PNG

Then, I ran QuickPwn... let it do it's thing, then I rebooted again (after the first boot that QuickPwn does) and ran Free Memory again. The first thing I noticed was that I had less available RAM than before, so I took a screenshot of all the running process again. See below.

After Jailbreak.jpgIMG_0089.PNG

I highlighted in green the processes that weren't there before I jailbroke. As you can see, jailbreaking doesn't JUST add Cydia... it decreases your RAM by running other processes in the background.

Anyone else care to shed some light on this discovery?

Mmm.. Seems that I have more memory available than you on a Jailbroken 3G

How'd you swing that? I've never seen 59MB of available RAM. Try downloading Free Memory and see if it's any different. Oh and I'm betting "Free Memory" is using up some RAM too.

Do I need to install any source on Cydia? or will I find it right away? I don't have wifi to connect right now (Yes, no data plan for me)

Free Memory is an App Store App. That's how I was able to get the "Before Jailbreak" screenshots.

Yeah.....who cares!!! I like what i can do with my phone being jailbroken.

Seriously... how'd you get that much memory? I know the iPod touch has more available memory than an iPhone because it doesn't have to run the phone stuff. You must teach us your secret. Also, to use SBSettings, you have to use MobileSubstrate right? I don't understand how you have that much RAM.

I have some codes I like running in the background to keep processes to a minimum ;)

No man, I'm joking. I have no idea, I just swiped to see my memory, that's what popped up. Maybe I have Steve's phone ;)

Would you care to share with us what you have installed? Do you only have SBSettings running?

Backgrounder
BossPrefs
Clippy
Clippy Search
Cycorder
Yellowsn0w
OpenSSH
SBSettings
Flashlight

That's the jailbroken apps

I just realized that it could also be due to you not having wifi on or data on... that probably makes a difference. After a complete reboot, using SBSettings I can swipe and get 64MB of available RAM on my iPod touch.

I just tried another experiment and this one was rather successful.

I used PwnageTool to Pwn my iPod touch this time and I chose to NOT install Cydia or Installer. The ONLY thing I did was gain access the the root partion. Basically the idea of this jailbreak was to have pretty much a virgin iPod touch with the ability to modify the system files.

After rebooting the iPod, Free Memory showed the same exact usage as the non-jailbroken iPod. There were no extra processes running and my available memory was about 60MB. So if anyone is interested in having the cleanest jailbreak possible, definitely use PwnageTool and stay away from Cydia and Installer... That is of course if your main goal is to have the fastest running iPhone with the added ability to customize without worrying about slow down.

That's pretty awesome! Have you tried installing a 3rd party app via SSH?

I may have installed it via Cydia... I don't remember doing it though.

Forget everything I said. It turns out that those processes come up a different random times depending on if they're needed or not. Installing Cydia does not leave anything running in the background, it was just a coincidence. A guy named "viddy" helped me figure this out on an IRC channel.

Now that I know Cydia doesn't affect anything, I'm gonna re-jailbreak just for the customization and be very careful about what I install on Cydia.

However, I still don't like SBSettings and MobileSubstrate crap. You guys can keep that, I'll pass, thanks.

I agree. I am JB but without lag because I took all that crap off.
