There you've finally agreed! There are negative effects to a jail*broken* iPhone......and those negatives are lag and buggines.

As clearly stated, I just simply do not download the thigns that cause my phone to be unstable. To some, jailbreaking without those things is not worth it. To me, its everything I need.

But it's a hit and miss affair, because there not Apple signed apps you have no idea if they will or won't cause lag and it's difficult to pinpoint which actually is. Don't forget Jail*Breaking* is aimed now at the masses.

Back to 1998. Mac users loved Mac OS 8. Mac OS classic were a limited OS; without memory protection, any application would crash the system.

People likd to install extensions on Mac OS classic to overcome some limitations back then. However, due memory lacks or so, the system would turn unstable in ocasions.

On this topic, a Mac Apologist would say that "Apple build the system simplier and extension developers don't care about stability" instead "Apple should put memory protection on mac os so developer get a breath".

Now talking about the new times: if you close mail and safari, you have nearly 50MB max free of memory to run another application. since iphone os don't have any smart methods (garbage collection) to avoid losts pointers to memory allocations, then any application from app store or from cydia can leak and then, put your iphone on low memory conditions..

So that sentence "I don't care about low memory conditions, because Apple signed apps are good" is simply not acurate, since Apple do not have exaustive testing (even with their software).

So, if you getting a jailbreak, do a test-drive with the apps you may need first. Its better to control the material than the material controlling you.

The difference is... if a MobileSubstrate plugin or daemon is running in the background, there's no way to quit it... if it has a memory leak, it won't matter what other apps you close, it's still going to be leaking. However, the App Store apps, QUIT upon closing them... This means that if the App is leaking memory, quitting it should stop it.

all those who do not like jailbreaking now will have a jailbroken iphone come feb 20th. guaranteed

No they won't because they will say;

I don't need turn by turn navigation. or

I don't think I will ever need turn by turn. or

I would rather spend $200 than have a slow, buggy, lagging iphone.

Yeah my phone lags but it is far more useful to me jailbroken.

haha ya they are all gonna say that

'I dont need turn by turn with voice navigation. Not worth it for me...'

Its like r u freaken kidding me?

Yes. Stopping would stop an app from app store from leak (suposing that you Know that!). but by then, you have less memory back to springboard to run apps.

As for closing deamons, why not use terminal or choose to not install? jss

Also is more easy to identify a process that leaks on a jailbreak phone.

At least your honest.

Let me also be honest. My JB phone does NOT lag. It runs great
I'm reading this forum and posting while listening to pandora. And I'm listening via Bluetooth using sonys 3.5 BT adaptor. Try that without jailbraking!

I'm not one of those people who wanted Turn-by-Turn directions, so I doubt I'll jailbreak on Feb. 20th. However, if it was a big deal to me, I can see why someone would want to jailbreak for that. Seems valid to me.

Just so you know... I'm not trying to convince anyone to un-jailbreak and you're not going to convince me to jailbreak again. I'll jailbreak when I feel like I want to and I'll restore when I want to.

I am just posting my findings.

Opening iRealsms has taken 4 seconds to open.
Snapture is a memory whore and always gives me an low memory error when being used, even with as much as 23M. the lockups and still screens drive me nuts. clear Cam is a much better anyway.
I am sure there are some other things that maybe slower but not all that noticable that I want to throw it against a wall.

Plus I love the 5 icon transparent/reflective dock

Everyone is different. I couldn't put up with that for even a day.

You've got a really special phone then - take good care of it! I'm on my fifth iPhone now (crap hardware, seriously) and every one of them has been sluggish after a few days of being jailbroken.

No kidding. If it consistently took four seconds to open an app I used regularly, I'd dump the iPhone in a flash. Or just go back to vanilla firmware and enjoy a responsive UI again. ;)

OG & G3 phone jailbroken, work like a charm

Me and my wife bought our phones in San Francisco, moved to the Caribbean, and after the first $900 bill from AT&T we realized we had to do something.

This was around last x-mas, and after 2 weeks of trying misc jailbreak methods and checking a sleuth of misc. self pro claimed teenage iPhone wizards wannabe's YouTube tutorials, I ended up on square one. No love.

Then the dev team came to the rescue with yellowsn0w (which enables me to use any SIM card). I upgraded both our phones to 2.2 firmware via iTunes, jailbroke them with Quickpwn and installed Cydia. Added the yellowsn0w source and installed it, and voila our phones now work flawlessly with the local provider.

No lag, no problem. As a bonus, I found a ton of apps that are useful to me my favorite being StumblerPlus.

Whatever problems people are having with jailbroken phones, maybe it's the method you're using, or maybe you get too creative.

Find a backup program and secure what you can't be without (just to be safe), restore your phone, upgrade to 2.2, and do it right. Don't install random apps without reading up on them first. All I can vouch for is that Cydia and yellowsn0w works for us using two different generation iPhones.

The only drawback for me is that there is no 3G network here, but Edge works fine. Since the island I'm on has a ton if free wireless networks it's not really much of an issue. Yeah, the GPS won't work either, but it's a small island so I don't really need it. The pros outweighs the cons easily. I guess in the end it depends on your situation and preference.

I thought there's only 1 con

You need to read more about jailbreaking. Theres so much info out there. It's free (you don't need a jailbroken computer to even read it!).

Google is a good start.

Try these tags -

You even get this wrong.

I don't need to Google anything, I just need to read all your posts, and the posts of your acolytes, to know what the supposed jb cons are.

Agree with that 10 top list to NOT jailbreake iphone. I never done it and i will never do it. The lack of some apps like video recording or running apps in background are reason of iphone hardware limitation rather than apple policy etc. So if will decide to run that apps its fine but don't be surprised that your iphone lagging/crushing all the time. I would rather not like to have unstable iphone. No thanks for jailbreaking.
