I bit the bullet. Instead of spending $100 on AppleCare+, I spent $50 on a Defender series case. Here's hoping things work out...god I hate putting such a beauty in a case.

My wife has the defender. We have 4 kids under 7 so necessary for her life :D
You will like it. It has a great feel to it.

if you drop your phone, bye bye phone...you'll need to get a replacement. :)

Good to know. I'm already thinking of other options for my next iPhone though, maybe trying bumper/screen or naked/AppleCare. For now I will sacrifice looks for what seems to be one of the better iPhone cases as far as protection. If the word around town rings true, I shouldn't even have to think about the phone's safety. Presumably the Otterbox has me covered. I would love to go naked if I had cash to throw around though. I've never been so enamored with a phone before, but it truly is a shame to hide it.

Eh? You mean without the case? I was under the impression that the case does a well enough job not to worry about such things.

EDIT: I just came to notice that the 4S Defender is missing the protective film over the cameras and logo that the 4 version had. I'm a little annoyed by this. Next time I'm just going naked. If Otterbox can't even get it right, I quit.

Ditching cases and going naked

I have had enough of cases. I have never dropped my iPhone 4 in the 13 months of ownership and have had an Incipio NGP which was then replaced with a Feather. Everytime I take my case off for cleaning I just see more and more marks to the antenna band.

I have an iPhone 4S on order and this time around I'm going to put it in a nice Sena ultra-slim leather pouch and take out insurance.

Not even sure if I am going to bother with screen protectors either. Even though my Incipio screen protector was a perfect install with no bubbles and correctly aligned, I think the screen looks neater without one as you don't have the lip around the home button or earpiece.

The only thing that concerns me is that I have seen a few pics with the coating worn off on a bare screen.

So definitely no case this time but on the fence with screen protectors due to the above. I would consider the Power Support Crystal.

I have about 10 cases, waste of money.

I have a metal back and a screen protector with a squaretrade warranty.

No more cases

What is this metal back you speak of? Is it a stuck on one or does it replace the glass?

You just jinxed yourself. :p

I bought a case for traveling and times where I'll be outside (working on the car, house repairs, etc.) and don't want to lay the bare glass on something that could scratch it. During the week it'll probably stay naked as it sits on my desk at work or on a table at home.

I do enjoy the added grip from the case though. When my hands get cold the glass seems to get really slippery.

.

LOL Thought the same thing!

The whole naked thing is really up to you. Some people just want peace of mind. The truth is that heaven forbid a million times you drop the phone and the glass cracks the replacements are not a ton of money.

However personally I feel that the 4/4S is a bit slippery so I keep it in a minimal Incipio Feather so I have a good grip. It did save my butt a few times when the phone fell on concrete so I am happy for that.

I've gone without a case or screen protector since the iPhone 4 was released. I haven't dropped it.

I did need to have my back glass replaced because the camera lens was scratched. (I think it was from putting the phone down on marble countertops.) Other than that, I've had no problems.

What's the over/under on how long before the OP drops his shiny new 4S? :D

Just kidding, OP. Hey, to each his own. If you're comfortable going naked, that's perfectly fine. Personally, while I love the design of the 4/4S visually, I find it uncomfortable as heck to hold. For me, a case isn't just about protection, but also making the phone a more comfortable piece in my hand.

Will my Camera Lens get scratched?

I never used a case on my 3GS... Just recently upgraded to 4S and I put an Otter Box Defender case on it right away. I am getting very tired of it's bulkiness though.

I never dropped my 3GS, and I doubt I will drop my 4S. Only worry though is that the Camera Lens seems to stick out on the back of the phone. Is it possible to scratch up the Camera Lens if I set it down on something without a case on?

lol I hear ya, I had a bulky battery case for months and I've ditched it for a slimmer bumper + ext. battery. I'm even thinking of getting rid of ngp on my ipad as well.

I do love the way the Feather looks and feels but it does get dirt /dust trapped in the open parts. Also it is not really designed to be taken off all of the time. The one thing that concerns me about no case is placing it down but I will probably just place in on top of leather pouch in office or at home. In all honesty and I dont feel that the Feather would offer much protection if it slipped out of my hand anyway and would probably land face down.

I have ordered a black ultra-slim Sena pouch and I wonder how long it will take before I keep pi@sed off with inserting and removing it :)

just looking at how tight the fit was and no easy way to remove it quickly ruled it out for me

I have so many cases too, from doing reviews, and I'm in the same boat as you

I'm doing Lucky Lab black spectra wraps, PowerSupport HD antiglare for front protection (hate smudges), SGP Crystal on the back (from a review case), and the good ole 5 year old iPod sock :D

Yes, I said iPod sock...so easy to take in and out

Let us know how you like the Sena case

Also have squaretrade insurance

Just pinch the bottom and the phone pops out. People trying to pull the phone out from the top will have problems initially. Insertion can certainly be difficult for a couple of weeks, but once the leather is broken in the phone slides in easily. The Ultraslim is a great design, I just hate all the lint the velvet sheds for the first week or two.

toooo many that's what she saids to quote lol

Good luck going caseless. my phone couldn't survive without cases lol. although, I did splurge on applecare+.. hmmmmm. if nothing else I suppose it'll up my resale value when I have to sell it and get the next iphone

I've been using the iKonicEdge pouch on my 3Gs and my new 4S (got it Friday) and will never go to a regular case again.

Leather pouches ARE very snug at first, but after maybe a 10 day to 2 week breakin time the work great. Easy to remove the phone and it does not fall out.

I prefer the pouches as they protect the phone in your pocket and keeps the pocket dust out off the phone. Plus, it's a breeze to clean the phone as you do not have to de-case it.

To protect the back I just place the phone on the pouch when I place the phone on my desk etc..

yeahhhh I got Applecare+ last week..... I might as well go naked now right? I mean, if it gets a ton of scratches is there anyway I can trade it in? Or am I supposed to drop it? ;);)

Hey any pics of the ikonicedge ?

Have fun setting your phone on anything. Not even a skin will help you - look at how exposed your camera glass is

Glad it's not just me who have had these thoughts as well with both my iPhone and iPad as well. If only could find my holster for my iPhone in my home and I would be good. I have a sleeve for my iPad.

Oh so envious. I think the iPhone 4/4s is an amazing piece of design... but with a 4.5 year old and a 2 year old the only way that design is going to last is to encase it in a otterbox or the like. Can't wait til someday I can let the design shine :)

I'd prefer to go naked if the phone wasn't so slippery. It falls easily off a chair or couch if not positioned the right way. I've used the Sena with my 4S and have dropped it three times so far. A couple of the times it's rolled onto the top, which is not protected, and there's a couple of small scratches. I'm going to have to use a more protective case even though I'd rather not.
