I bit the bullet. Instead of spending $100 on AppleCare+, I spent $50 on a Defender series case. Here's hoping things work out...god I hate putting such a beauty in a case.

I would also do applecare+ well well worth it.

There are people here that will claim they never use a case for years and that their device still is like new.

They need glasses! I have a scuff mark on the back of my 4s from just sliding it in and out of the case each few weeks to clean out any debris!
Your experience is only your experience. It's only a single data point and you can't extrapolate trends from it. Don't make the typical forum user mistake of assuming that whatever happens (or doesn't happen) to you is the same for everyone else out there. There are certainly people who can use a naked device without suffering damage. Just because you haven't experienced something doesn't mean that it isn't possible.

Why do people use cases??? It ruin the quality of the phone.
No, it does not "ruin the quality of the phone". You might think so but that's your opinion. Do you not understand opinion versus fact? Do you not understand that other people can have preferences different from your own? Obviously the people that use cases don't think that the case impacts their usage of the device enough to get rid of the case. Such people want the added protection and security. They might have to deal with some compromises but they feel that those compromises are worth it. Keep in mind that worth is always a highly subjective matter. That's why some people use cases and some do not. Is that not apparent to you?

Before the iphone even came out, my nokia n95 cost 300-400 dollars without contract and nobody even thought about cases or screen protections. It all started because of apple.
Nonsense. Cases and screen protectors existed many, many years before the iPhone. You may not recall them or you may have not seen them before the iPhone. I do as I used them on old Blackberries to protect their screens. The Blackberry 7100, released in 2004, is one example off the top of my head. The original iPhone wasn't released until 2007. Again, you're confusing your own tunnel vision with reality.

I am debating if I should use a case?

Anyone here does not use a case? Have you phone got scratched or broke? Please post your experience here.
If you really want to find out then you need to take the initiative and search. You can't just sit back and expect everyone that happened to experience damage without a case to reply to this thread for you. It can and does happen if that's what you're wondering. Is it worth using a case? That's your call to make. There's not one single answer that suits everyone out there. That should be very obvious if you read the replies in this thread and other threads on this and other sites. Not everyone agrees on the whole naked versus case topic. You have to figure out where you're willing to draw the line. We can't tell you.

What's the point of having a beautifully designed phone (and no doubt heavily R&D on the design by Apple on how it feels in your hand and how it looks), then to have it wrapped in some 3rd party ugly piece of plastic that probably took a month to design?
"The point" is always subjective. And whether a case is ugly or not is also subjective. Plenty of people are perfectly happy with the designs of their cases whether you get it or not. Plenty of people are also perfectly happy with their naked iPhone. Why does it matter to you if someone else chooses to use a case or not?

I'm sure most of you partly bought the iPhone for the amazing design of the phone
How are you certain that's the top reason for most? I, for example, have never purchased a device intending to use it naked regardless of how "amazing" the design was. Every product out there, regardless of design, has users who mod or customize the product.

but now that you have it, you want to cover it all up and not enjoy it?
False dichotomy. Plenty of people use cases and enjoy their iPhones. They may be mutually exclusive to you but that's just your specific preference. Don't make the mistake of assuming that what you prefer is always universal.

I understand what u guys are arguing about, and I'd like to point out that aside from a couple case freaks here and there, if the iPhone were 100% scratch and drop proof, there would undoubtedly be 99.9999% of us going naked with the device to fully enjoy the design. ;)

I purchased an Incase Slider the other night. Used it for a couple of days and decided the case thing just isn't for me like it use to be. I like the Candyshell Satin, but refuse to drop another $40 on a case.

I wish I were as smart as you. I I didn't buy any cases at all I'd have enough to buy another iPhone at full retail price to have a back up in case I shattered it or lost it. Lol

Haha, so many times this. I need to stop it.

Most is not all. I didn't say top reason or imply it. I'm well aware people that people will be putting cases on their phone regardless and modify as they see fit. So don't mistake of assuming of what you think I think is correct.
