Been rocking the Otterbox Commuter series and couldn't be happier. Used it on my iP5 and now 5S, It does add slight amount of weight but also adds a comfortable amount of width to the device. I have also had near drop moments many times and it has definitely protected my iP5 and 5S from shattering and/or getting dented.

I like to keep my devices in mint/brand new condition because resale to me is very very important as I like to upgrade yearly. The amount of care I put into my iPhones while using them to the fullest extent is always appreciated by the second hand buyer as well.

I do not purchase AppleCare+ because I purchase my devices at full price [no contracts] and look at expenses over 2yr/24months rather than just today [if you all really think about it, it adds up quick] and adding AppleCare+ at $99 + $79 for replacements + $849 + Taxes makes you really think about where you want to spend your money and how careful you want to be.

And when it comes time to resell, you'll be lucky if the case/ceaseless difference covers the cost of the case.

i like to have a case on my phone, though I've been thinking about getting a clear skin for my iPhone, i have the skinomi on my iPad mini and i like it a lot.

I use my iPhone 5 naked, and AppleCare + wasn't available when iPhone 5 launched.

I bought a load of cases for my iPhone 5, but haven't really used any off them. Last time I used a case was New Year's Eve when I went out and I knew they was a high chance of getting my iPhone knocked out of my hand/dropping it.

With my next iPhone I'm going to use it naked with AppleCare + and also have a lifeproof case. So I'm covered for the extreme.

I think it will, btw I got the case free as a gift, before this I was using one of those $5 gel/tpu cases from eBay.

Having sold every single one of my iPhones to date on Craigslist locally, I have seen nothing but appreciation of my mint condition iPhones year after year by second hand buyers.

iPhone 4 16GB Purchased for = $500 [Purchased Used 2.5 months after launch], Sold for $450 --- Sold 1.5 months before 4S launch
iPhone 4S 64GB Purchased for $700 [Purchased used about 3.5months after launch] = Sold for $550 --- Sold 4 months after iPhone 5 launch
iPhone 5 32GB = $600 [Purchased used about 2 months after launch] = Sold for $520 --- Sold 3 weeks before 5S launch
iPhone 5S 64GB = $900 - Purchased Brand New At launch --- Hoping it will sell for around $650-$700 approx. 1 month before launch of next iPhone.

All In all If this 5S goes for about my asking price, I'll have spent about $550 over 4 years of iPhones....roughly $137/year "leasing" cost practically....much cheaper than AT&T NEXT, T-Mobile Jump etc.

If I really need to, I usually pick up a cheap android phone for the "in between" and for me this works, may or may not work for others but I am happy with the way things turn out.

Tried going caseless for a day and just didn't feel comfortable. I'm now rocking the Speck Smartflex Wallet Case.

I got the Space Grey 5s on Friday and I bought my wife a gold one on Saturday. I also picked up two thin, transparent, gel cases. A little protection but you can still clearly see the design/colour.

Whatever floats your boat.

Have a 1 week old 5s never use cases, screen protector, it makes me laugh when I see people with bulky cases on there phones and screen protectors and what not.

Why have one of the best looking phones on the market and cover it up so it looks like an old Nokia? Plus I like to feel my phone in my hand, I like to feel the brushed metal and smooth screen not some crappy plastic case.

A well applied Screen Protector shouldn't even be noticeable.

No bubble expert since 2008. :p:D

I use the apple leather case because I think it feels better in hand than when its naked.

and I use a lifeproof fre case when I'm snowboarding or doing something like that so I can shoot some videos etc without worrying about snow/dirt/water being an issue.

help me ;_; no matter what I try, I can't manage to get a screen protector on PERFECTLY. I can get it on fine, with no bubbles, but no matter what, there's ALWAYS a tiny piece of lint or debris or hair under the screen protector. I've sprayed the protector with water, got the screen wet, etc but I can't do it right. Ever.

Not that I really need a screen protector, but if it's done right it doesn't even look like it's there, so it's worth it. But I can't do it. :(

no cover on phone

Yes, no cover for both iPhone 4 and iPhone 5S. The iPhone 4 have been in the concrete a lot of times, always seem to land on the metal, so lucky me. Had my first iPhone 5S accident to day. Lost it on a some stone tiles at the supermarket with the screen first. No marks. Had it for 5 months now, show slight wear, but nothing I would care about.

Apple have put all this effort into making it thinner, and then I just put it in a cover and fatten it again, no way. Tried to find a case, and almost bought those wallets from semifor, but I don't want to loose both my money and my phone at the same time.

For my iPhone 5s, I use the Holy Grail screen protector, by Sirlancelot's Armor, and it's the best I have ever used! It might be obsolete for iPhone 6.

I also use the Apple black leather case and I'm quite impressed with it! After 5 months of use, there's no wear on it. It's super thin an comfortable; almost like a naked iPhone 1st generation.

The trick is you don't remove the entire backing.

Most protectors come with two layers, one either side of the actual protector itself and labelled 1 and 2. Layer 1 unveils the side which goes on the screen.

Go into a dust and hair free room (bathroom or kitchen) and wipe your screen down. Peel back just a few millimetres of the end which goes onto the screen first and line up the protector with your display.

Then as you hold the phone and applied edge of the protector with one hand, peel back the remaining part of layer 1 (which will now be UNDER the protector but that's normal). As you peel back layer 1 with one hand continue up press down the protector with the other until you reach the end of the screen.

Too many people take the entire layer 1 off and expose the protector to dust and hair, etc. Once the protector is on, push out any bubbles to the edges of the display and remove layer 2 which is on top of the protector to protect it during allocation to reveal your perfectly applied protector.

Sounds a lot but takes 10 seconds.

I almost never use a case on any of my iPhones. The only ones I even remotely liked were the Bumper case for my iPhone 4S and the current Caudabe Veil for my 5S. I only use them if I'm going out somewhere where I know I'll be sitting the phone down flat and it could potentially get scratched from sliding or whatever else is on the surface. Other than that, always naked.

Yup. I use the Caudabe Veil as well on my 5s and it's pretty much like going naked. I don't bother taking it off. Worked very well so far. My problem isn't really dropping it, it's having the phone bang around with coins and keys in my pockets (inadvertently). The Caudabe pretty much solves that problem while keeping it in near-naked condition.

Thanks. I tried your method. It resulted in a slight misalignment on the top left, and some lint in the top right. Thankfully, my case covers both imperfections! I've tried this method before but it's so difficult for me to get the protector lined up perfectly. If I wasn't using the otterbox defender, I would not be satisfied with this application, but it works for me now!

Combine the above steps with the "hinge" method (take some masking tape and line up the protector perfectly first, then tape it down in place, THEN peel/install) and you will also get perfect alignment. I have become the expert installer for other people, yet never use one on mine anymore.

It can be done, and can be done easily if you don't do what most people do (rip off the protector and try to align it after it's exposed lol).

I've tried the hinge method before and it worked reasonably well but I must live inside a vacuum bag :p

That's not the method that's causing it, simply the application. If lint is present then the area isn't clear enough. If it's misaligned then you've not quite lined up the first few millimetres before processing. I prefer protectors that have the 1 and 2 tabs at the top so you can also use the earpiece and front camera as point of reference when lining it up.

Keep with it, you'll get it soon enough.

This thread got me to thinking...about to try rocking my 5S naked for the rest of the week. I missed having a wallet in my pocket and sucks when I go to the vending machine at work and I left my phone on my desk w/ my card.

No worries, there's definitely an "art" to it. Ironically, if you can get a large enough ziploc bag it can create a bit more of a dust free zone to work in too... I used to use that method before I got really fast at it.

Also ironically, I screen more NON-iPhones now. Most of my iPhone buddies have taken my lead and just go naked :D

No Case

I've said it before -

I picked up my 5s on launch day - having waited since 3 AM - And, rather than the 16 GB I was planning on, a 64 GB was all that was remaining for my carrier - so I bit my tongue and bought it. It looked so stellar (space gray) and was my first iPhone, so placing it in my pocket was a new experience for me - SO much lighter and smaller and nicer to carry than my collection of android phones.

Having said that, I determined that putting any type of case on this piece of art would destroy its purpose, when in the context of daily pocket carrying.

I did, however, want to try a glass screen protector - preferably a thin one that kept the same "glass" feel as naked. And that's what I did. iLoome ScreenMate Flex - It is the best screen protector out there, IMO (Although I have determined that a screen protector isn't as necessary as I thought). It is invisible, and everyone says - "Man, your iPhone looks so nice." Yeah, that's because it is naked.

Also, I do put a very slim snap-on case every day for the Gym. Then I immediately take it off and put it in my gym bag, or use it for Snowboarding, etc... when I know I could easily drop it. Other than that? No way.

Cheers.

The other trick I use for removing dust/lint from under a screen protector..... wind some masking tape around the tip of your index finger, sticky side out. Then lift the protector up by using another small piece of masking tape. Use your taped fingertip to "dab" away any dust/lint from the screen or protector, and lay the protector down again.

Works wonders.
