Sorry to be the n00b, but ... with this update:

- Whether downloaded in iTunes or on the device, the Navigon download is now just the software and no maps

- Users have to re-download all the maps they want (or all the maps they used to have) directly to device, meaning it has to be done over wifi, correct?

I have always updated Navigon from iTunes because it's such a big download, but I have to go somewhere where I have access to Wifi and a reasonably high internet speed when I update, because that's the only way to get maps back on my phone, correct?

Sorry, I just want to be careful that I don't break Navigon unintentionally before I have a way to fix it....

I had to download the maps from the iphone. When you update, you have no maps initially

Found this on Navigon's facebook page:

Seems to suggest that normal Navigon now allows you to update your maps only a single time, while purchasing the FreshMaps Addon will allow you to update your maps quarterly.

I read your comment and found this on their FAQ:

What is "NAVIGON FreshMaps"?
Answer:
NAVIGON FreshMaps is a service which keeps your navigation system's map up to date at all times. The navigation map used is a central component of your navigation system.

Every year approximately 15% of the road network changes (new streets, changes to traffic regulations, new one-way systems, etc.). Therefore it is always important to use an up-to-date map. If you subscribe to NAVIGON FreshMaps, the following services are available for you:

• Regularly updated versions of your navigation map can be
downloaded for a period of 2 years. New maps are available
in every quarter of the 2-year period.

• You will be notified as soon as a new version is available.

With some NAVIGON devices this service is already included in the purchase price. For other devices there is a generous discount (e.g. 80% for the NAVIGON 2110max) if you subscribe to NAVIGON FreshMaps within 30 days after the purchase.
So which is it? Lifetime or $19.99 for two years?

I haven't bought any nab app as I was waiting for this update and a sale and I got both but I'm still on the fence between Navigon and TomTom, damn I don't know what to do

Which extras did you buy in addition to the app, and do you think they were worth it?

The current list seems to be:

Traffic $19.99
FreshMaps $14.99
Panorama $9.99
Speedcams $4.99
Zagat $7.99

I got all of them since they're quite inexpensive. Admittedly though, Zagat may not be as handy as a standalone version or Yelp and similar alternatives.

Based on screenshots, I had high expectation for the upgrade. My overall impression.
  • Both the Map menu (with 2-by-2 options) and Settings have been cleaned up pretty nicely. Unfortunately, rest of the UI is pretty much the same as before.
  • It is still impossible to paste the address from the clipboard.
  • The initial launch still takes a long time (20 seconds on iPhone 4). And routing calculation isn't any faster. On the other hand, loading of contacts and my destinations are instantaneous.
  • Extras page is pretty flaky. It goes down frequently (showing nothing after 30 seconds or so attempt) and when it does, I don't see Zagat.
  • Panorama 3D view is still limited to landscape features. NAVIGON needs to add landmark and buildings to this view.
  • USA speedcams is still mostly useless.
  • Fresh Maps XL is sure confusing. It sometimes show up as $19.99 option, sometimes $14.99. Also, is it lifetime or 2-year?

This sucks

I paid full price for the app less than a week ago.....now they go and change it.
I don't like the new interface. It is not the app I purchased just a few days ago.
This is blatant theft in my opinion. Bait and switch.
I am going to demand my money back.

What are you talking about? Updating a product is "blatant theft?" Do you know what "bait and switch" means? I'd do Navigon a favor and request a refund from Apple. I'd rather give you a refund than have to deal with the imminent, thoughtful support emails I;m sure they will get.

Now their website is down.........

Must be all the happy customers bringing down the servers, or they took the site down because they don't want us contacting them.
Great customer service..........

I am seriously pissed! My favorites and recents are GONE! They should have warned us this would happen and given us a way to back them up.

I've used Navigon since the app first hit the app store... this is NOT good.

UPDATE: Leaving my original mini-tantrum in place I found out that if you restart the app and have downloaded the maps that correspond with your favorites they will be restored, as will your recents.

Not angry any more. Just think Navigon might have done well to warn people about these things.

Yeah, that's a bummer. They shouldn't have warned people, they should have found a way to not whip them.

Wow......I finally got on their site and looked for a way to contact them. They didn't even have the USA listed for customer support. We are part of "the rest of the world" for customer service.
No dedicated USA contact info.
I finally located a link to send them an email.
Well see how promptly they reply.
Judging by the reviews they are getting on the app store, I'm not alone.
They took what appeared to be a pretty good app and changed it to increase their profits I guess.
Can't see any other explanation.

Me too and not sure what to do. I wonder if it is permanent or is there a way to recover them. It seems strange that you and I are the only ones reporting this problem.

To others: are you Favorites carried over?

I got mine back. Install the maps that correspond with your favorites and then restart Navigon. Should do the trick.

Strange that in some places they say 2 years of maps and other places they say it's a life time thing. They really need to clarify that.

How much effort is it to download ALL the maps? Personally I have a 64GB iPhone and would rather have everything so I don't have to worry about it.

Considering how quick it is to download maps, unless you travel a lot, I don't know why one would need to be so prepared. I haven't been out of my state in years. I don't need Washington or Oregon.

I answered that question. I have plenty of space so why not. What I don't know is what is involved in downloading everything. How many separate maps are there? I'm not going to rush into upgrading until I find out more.

BTW, life is short. Get the hell out of your home state sometimes. Just IMO.

Convolute (also I had to delete it twice to get it to actually delete) but it DOES work, thanks. How did you figure this out (trial and error?)?

I've been in quite a few states, having lived in a few on both sides of the continent, and have lived overseas. I'm more concerned about caring for my family than I am adding notches in my frequent flyer miles account.

Lecture someone else.

What I do see to be missing is the turn-by-turn rundown you used to be able to get in settings after you started a route. Does anyone know if this was removed or I'm just not finding it?

Nope I saw it posted somewhere else when I was trying to figure out how to fix the issue, or if I needed to restore Navigon 1.0 ;-) Someone posted it in comments on a review article. I tried it and it worked... thank goodness!

So about freshmaps, my mom just decided to go ahead and spring for it and she said it does give you all the maps of North america (or access to them anyways). She didn't have Canada before and now she can get canadian maps. Seems like a good deal honestly (well if you didn't already have all of N. America. For me it would bea good deal cause I"m still missing Central and Canada and being in washingnton having canadian maps, at least for B.C., would be very useful.

My guess is default map is from Navteq but the updates of freshmap is from somewhere else.

Thank you Heather A

Right you are - restart the app and there are all your recent and favorites. Brilliant (you).

----------

I only had regional US (east coast), purchased Freshmaps and now I have British Columbia and Quebec also (where I have friends and family living). Thanks for all of you discovering these facts.

I bought the FreshMaps XL and it does come with all of NA maps in it. So for other regional people this seems to be the way to get more maps. Its all or nothing. however for $25 you get all of NA and quartly updates for life (I think the 2 year number people are seeing is for their computer based map updates for dedicated GPS units).
