Am I being too nit-picky to think the protruding lens is almost a deal breaker for me? Or, at least not inline with Apple's design aesthetic philosophy?

If it is for magnetic lens attachment, would you still be bitching?

... giving us a clear picture of what the finished device might look like ahead of its September 9 debut.

очень хорошо! (Óchen' Horoshó - "Very well done")

Now I think I understand why the gray "insulator lines" on the back are so wide.
It's because the (presumably) glass inlays on the back are totally flat.
The "insulator" needs to be wide enough to continue the back shell's curve into the flat inlays.
And if it's that wide at the edges, it needs to be that wide across the flat area to match.
Makes perfect sense now.

Anyone else not excited for this size increase? the 5 was pushing it enough compared to the 4s, now I would rather have a 2.5-3" iphone mini than the iphone 6.

I totally agree. It would be awesome to have an iPhone of the same size like the iPod nano. Being able to put it into your smallest jeans pocket, while doing sports without feeling the heavy weight of a giant glass screen glued to a giant battery.

Not everyone is pleased with the insane MEGALOMANIA going on in the mobile market. Watching those weird people talking into their giant Samsung phablets in the streets makes you feel like an alien on a foreign planet.

What happened to the nifty and titchy phones we all used to love 10 years ago? It's time to embrace the diminutiveness again.

I'm thinking it might be a magnetic lens attachment ring.
If it were flush, the magnetically attached lens might still be off-center slightly.
And that would wreak havoc on image quality. The ring could keep the attachment lens perfectly aligned.
But there would be no screw threads or other locking mechanisms.
Think of it as an inverted Nikon bayonet mount without the quarter-turn lock.

Why do people care so much about a slightly 'protruding' camera? It's not like the big bumps on Android phones, it's a thin metal ring you won't ever notice after you initially buy the device.

It won't make the phone wobble when you put it on a desk, you won't feel it in your hand, and how often do you turn your phone over to the back inspecting each element?

I'd rather they make the whole device thinner and lighter and protrude the camera a fraction rather than limit the thinness of the entire device due to the camera.

Very happy with this.

I really wish they offered the White front with space grey back, I would be all over that. I have had a black 3GS and 4, I switched to the white for the 5. But that black screen is looking sexy! Now I have a dilemma

Those antenna breaks looks like crap.
It's nice and thin though, but when put beside the 5S in the video, I still think the 5S is a more beautiful piece of hardware.

I must be in the minority because I think the back of the 6 looks waaaay better than the 5s. I prefer the one solid color rather than the black glass on top and bottom and space grey in the middle. The color of the antenna bands blend in nicely as well.

You obviously don't use your smart device to its full potential. It's not about being a phone anymore. So much more to it then just a phone.

As someone who had and loved the Palm Pre and HP Veer I can tell you that you don't want something that small if you ever want to web browse or watch video.

if I am going to do much browsing or videos, i'll just use an ipad mini. I just want to be able to use the web in a pinch, and have something more like an ipod nano to carry around with me all the time vs. something over 2x as heavy and big.

you don't need a big screen to do all that, especially as siri improves. I want iphone nano same size as current ipod nano and weighing less than 50 grams. I grab an ipad when I want to do stuff that could benefit from a big screen, all other times, the smaller the thing I have to carry around with me 24/7 to stay in contact with the world, the better.

I think you need to buy the Galaxy gear S. It's not even an android OS so you can save some face! No need for tight jeans, speedos will do;)

Not bad, but the home button almost falling into the bottom of the phone seems sloppy to me. I would be very surprised if that ends up being a trait we see in the actual unveiling.

Or the camera part is about the same thickness as it was in the 5s but Apple's desire for "thinner" results in forcing the protrusion.

In another instance, Apple ejected hardware (the superdrive from iMacs) to be able to deliver the amazingly thin edges of the current generation of iMac. If the camera part makers don't figure out how to significantly thin their deliverable, maybe the camera will get ejected from a future generation of iPhone. And, if so, much as the unpaid PR core spun "just buy an external drive" for those who were not happy about the Superdrive, they'll probably spin "buy a real camera" for those who are unhappy about the camera jettison.
Don't forget that they previously ejected the 3 1/2 inch floppy drive. There are still people who are furious about that! And where do I plug in my Centronics Parallel printer? There's no serial port or VGA port either. Apple is famous for leaving their customers behind. It started in 1984 with a total and unforgivable lack of support for 8 inch and 5 1/4 inch floppies. There should be at least 15 different ports on the back of every Mac to support all the standards. Compact Flash, anyone?

Seriously, though: mobile phone camera use is on the rise, as opposed to optical disc use. Apple is more likely to add additional cameras to the iPhone (front and back), in order to increase image quality with thinner cameras (the individual camera images would not be as good, but combined, they could be fantastic), and to produce 3D environment maps.

I wish whoever shot this would have put it face up on a table and tapped around the screen (particularly in the upper corner opposite the camera), to see if the protruding camera is going to case it to move/rattle if used in that situation. That's something that's really going to bother me if it does that, but hopefully it won't.

A lot of folks are talking that way, but what if there is a reason for the protruding lens. Like an optical zoom that needs the extra space. Or it needs the space to avoid the issue the 5S has had with some cameras not opening (as if the aperture cover somehow gets stuck on the backside of the lens.

Yeah, except when you want to lay your phone flat and a majority of the pressure is put on the delicate lens.

Brilliant design Jonny I've. Oh, I'm also loving the huge bezel, very retro!

Wow, sounds like phones like the S5, S4, Notewhatever or Nokia phones were total design fails then, or what is your take on that?

"iPhone6 Vudriya, iPhone6 Matchka"
Sorry, watching RAW as I type this...

On a serious note, those worried about the protruding camera, use a case with a cutout for camera, and then it will sit flush on the table. Who is foolish enough to use a new iPhone without a case anyways? The thin rounded edges of this iPhone will make it very easy to slip out of your hand.. And onto the ground :p

I am sold.

I love how it pays homage to the original 2007 iPhone. It has come a long way since. And it doesn't hurt it's sexy as hell and something tells me the black is gonna be the sexiest of all 3 colours.
