it just tells me that those living off of the bare minimum will just finance while the rich dont care. the ones conscious about their financial situation (middle class id say) will think twice before forking out so much money

They should show them the price of the MacBook Pro and see if the poll results are still the same.
haha i agree but if windows user show the mac users how much they paid to fix their windows pc every time it gets full of viruses, spyware, crimeware, adware and everything that finishes in ware, i'm sure they will rather spent the money on the mac book pro, asked any windows user that got the ransomeware virus attack how much they paid to be able to get their data back, many paid and still didn't get their data back

now windows upgrades are free because microsoft copied the free os thing from apple
but back then it was from 100 to 200 to upgrade windows to a new version depending on the windows version

home- pro

i know Tim is no good because all he cares about is money but i rather haver mac os even if macs are a little expensive than that horrible windows that drive me nuts and infuriate me

at least apple is a good brand with quality and prestige

windows = payless
apple = footlocker

:D

Grass is always greener... While I love OS X, iOS, and the Apple ecosystem, I am becoming fed up with Apple hardware.

> MBA 11" dead after 3 yrs (bricked).
> Mac 27" dead after 2.5 yrs (all ports dead)
> Mac Mini life span = max 24 mos after two tries
> MacBook Pro (super slow after 18 months, even after clean wipe and reinstall)
> iPhone 7 Plus - haptic home button has become laggy and slow to respond
> iPad Pro 9.7 - touch disease (very frequently, several swipes or touches are required to get a response)

This is expensive stuff! I still suspect Apple has a secret hardware deceleration and self-destruct button in the HQ basement! My MBP took a major performance dive about a week after WWDC this year.
I would spend all my time searching for 4 leaf clovers if I had that kind of luck.

They're getting better press, and to be frank, they're making better moves than they were from XP to 8.

It's not very hard to make better moves than that :p Microsoft doesn't understand subtlety.

Going from a decent but long in the tooth OS with security problems to an OS with completely over the top security protections that bug the hell out of users. Then tune it back in Win7 and the OS was OK. Then they decided that every desktop must basically be a big tablet and giving users no other option but to stare at postcard-sized icons on their 27" screen. Then tuned that back and it ended up okay.. I wonder what decent idea they're going to screw up with Windows 11 :)

My guess is like 85% of the people looking to make the switch have had issues with Windows 10 updates. This is one area where Microsoft is still in the stone age, where Apple OS updates are almost always seamless.

My experince is the opposite. Although I like apple devices and most of my devices are (ipads, macbooks and iphones) I never keep important information only on an apple device due to multiple issue with data, program compatibility issues and non seamless updates, and including in the Mobile Me days the hassle of removing all my data on their storage system due to it closed down. I now keep everything that is online with OneDrive and havent looked back since.

It wasn't always that way...

Back in the tiger/leopard days it happened several times that updates broke some systems. The forums here were full of "10.4.5 is out - is it safe to update??" topics ;) They have really improved a lot in that area.

And the "Safari is snappier". Especially in the early days when it was actually true (fun fact, OS X used to come with Internet Explorer!)

your macbook is already failing? that's a serious lemon if it only lasted two years...maybe the Arizona heat fried some internal components????

No heat issues; the 1st Gen butterfly keyboard is the weak link and the hinge is loose. It's never been exposed to harsh environments. Apple has agreed to fix it so I hope they're able to install the second-generation board in its place.

Since I've had Apple products that were up to 18-months out of Apple Care warranty, and they still repaired or replaced the device; I can't complain.

The question is how many will follow through on that plan?
The question is how many macusers are planning to switch back to windows/microsoft? And will follow throug ? (I 4 1)

Apple is throttling power and fans trying to fix their heatproblems with GPU and CPU. Apple is just a marketing gimmick, they have the same problems as other producers. I bought a mbp E2011 and an Asus laptop both i7, quess which is still running?

The funny thing is that people with an average household income of less than 15k/year are within 6 percentage points of being as likely to switch to the Mac as people with an average household income of more than 150k.

So, are the people in the <15k group planning on finding higher paying jobs or banking on winning the lottery?
They’re probably not planning to spend their own money. There’s probably a lot of college kids in that group.

It's a bit of an amusing article to me--- Basically boiling down to 'people with money plan to switch to Mac'. Sure, it would be nice to work on the same ecosystem at home as I do at work, but c'mon. I'm drowning in student loan payments. It's just not affordable.

All your troubles are caused by poor cooling which kills components over the time. If you are on heavy GPU workflow the only thing you can do to extend the life of your MBP is to buy the version without dedicated GPU, otherwise your dedicated GPU will be ready for reballing within a year. Lack of proper cooling has always allowed Apple to come up with slimmer and thinner casing compared to competition, to compensate they passively manage the heat within OSX itself and they do it a lot better than Windows. Like miles better.

I'm aware of that and I almost bought a custom Digital Storm machine just prior to purchasing the June MBP. I prefer the Windows screen format, software titles like' speech software, Adobe Acrobat Pro, more on the PC than on my Mac. It's the OS and Apple ecosystem that kept me on board, and not the hardware.

Clickbait headline.

First, the actual poll says "in the next six to twenty-four months". Second, even given the longer time frame it is obvious the results can't be accurate. There are over a billion Windows computers in use and that would mean additional Mac sales of 125 million per year which is six times higher than the current sales rate of about 20 million annually.

Even if you can buy into the idea that 25% of Windows users are so disgusted with the OS they are willing to buy a new computer to get away from it, Windows 10 (which is actually pretty good) has been out for almost two years already and the abomination that was Windows 8 came out five years ago. That kind of massive dissatisfaction would have manifested itself in hugely increasing Mac sales long before now. Mac sales have been pretty steady since 2011.

I would love to see the exact question that was asked and if the population sampled was truly random as that can go a long way toward influencing the results of the poll.

Yesterday someone asked how to minimize a window on a Mac, so I answered and right after, the person next to me said: "Macs are dumb..." The is a true story!

I can see this being true considering that survey should also reveal that 40% are on still on Windows XP, and they are expecting the Mac's to obviously have USB-A and SD card slots.

The simple reality is that the conversation is absolutely shifting away from Apple more and more. It's possible Mac will achieve 5% marketshare at some point in the future, but with Windows 10 and the OEM hardware resurgence, it's less and less likely. Even moreso considering Apple has done everything but officially announce that their only real future is with IOS.

You can basically ask your friends if they like MacBooks 99% would say yes, except gamers or very serious with their work and the application they use. But the problem with these people who would always wanted a Mac changes their mind once they see the price. So yeah I completely agree with the survey. Also a bunch of kids wants an iPhone but their parents keeps buying them an Android because it's cheaper.

Companies have multiple computers, sometimes thousands of them. I don't think the survey was polling companies. I use Windows at work, but I don't buy those computers and I have no control over what they buy. I can choose what I want at home, though.

I am not saying that polls are accurate, but the discrepancy between the answers Mac users gave and Windows users gave can't be bad news for Apple.

That's what I did.. From macOS no less.

It's a shame because I really liked Mac OS while I used it (since 2004). But it's becoming too dumbed down. It's getting harder to do simple things in the filesystem (/etc /usr, stuff like that) with System Integrity Protection and POSIX compatibility is suffering. A lot of apps from 'brew' have issues now. I've especially had lots of issues with forwarded X-Window apps not working well with XQuartz (which should really still be part of the main OS). Xauth failing even though it's set up correcly, weird black borders around some input controls, stuff like that.

The bug in which the intel HAXM driver (which is needed for Android studio's emulator) breaks connecting to Samba shares was the last straw. Still not fixed in OS X Sierra :(

The lack of upgradability was another thing - my current main box is a 2011 Mac Mini (Dedicated GPU version). With 2 SSDs and 16GB RAM. If I couldn't have upgraded it would have been long obsolete. In fact I don't think I could buy this config in the current model if I wanted to.
[doublepost=1498683906][/doublepost]

More like "We'll think of you next year, promise!"

Also, there's no mid-pro range anymore, the mini is no longer a capable machine with everything soldered down. An iMac could never work for me as I need to use my screens with multiple computers (not to mention the glossy screen).

And yeah it's great to be able to buy cheap hardware now. But still... I wish I could still use macOS. They do a lot of stuff right too.

You have to admit that your requirements are outside the norm. Moving to Linux sounds like the right move for you. I don't like it when companies try to be everything to everyone, Apple certainly is not.

Hello Kool-Aid Drinker'. (supposed "disappointment" of the 2016 MacBook Pro)? I cannot recall when Apple has ever discontinued a product so soon after its release date. .
go research the MBP update schedule for, say, this decade...

report back with your findings.
