I had a feeling it was coming out today... yesterday I noted that "netflix, inc" showed in the search results but yielded no results... as for the release... YES!!!!!!

glad the app is out. lame that it's one of those not optimized for the Retina display. Kind of inexcusable that the interface icons aren't high res since this is shipping two months after the iPhone 4 release. I can understand all of their movie artwork not yet being optimized but the splash screen and interface? Lame.
I'm excited. I've got an unlimited plan and a netflix instant queue a mile long. I'll finally be able to make a dent in it.

I feel a lot of overage fees coming. :(
Not if you have an unlimited data plan :D

Looks cool, but requires iOS 3.1.3 to run. Lame.
Why wouldn't you be on 3.1.3? There's a jailbreak available for it on every iteration. It's not like Netflix is requiring 4.0.2.

added: I used it to watch MI-5 and it looks good.

Great app...Just streamed the office while on my way to work on the train! Made my hour ride go so much faster! One question though...Does any one know much data is going to be used by streaming with 3g? I'm grandfathered in to the older plan which is "unlimited" but really isn't it capped at 5gigs? Thanks to anyone who knows!!

My thoughts exactly.

I just deleted the Phone Flix app thinking the Netflix one had me covered.
I like to be able to be on the go, think of a movie I want added to my queue, it would be nice to search and add on the iPhone.

Very strange since it is about 50% of what I use Netlfix for and the iPad app has it.

Some Netflix-enabled devices are view-only.

I understand why they develop things the way they do...

iPhone, TV, Game Console(?) - view-only

iPad, Computer - full

is PhoneFlix an official netflix app?

thanks to the eu

I guess it's simpler for Content Providers if the audience for advertisement is restricted to the US, so they can apply similar ad charges as on TV/cable, etc...

it's the movie studios/distributors/apple et al that are unable to license in the eu as one market, instead, they have to work with26 different countries, each of which has their own protocols, policies, licensing fee structure, copywrite terms, and bureaucrats with nothing better to do than gum up the works so they can justify their existence. the license holders (think they) must control release patterns/dates across the world, based on a very old marketing strategy now outdated.

zzzzzzz....(the sound coming from the rooms of inventive thinkers in music/film marketing.

Has anyone else noticed it doesn't support fast app switching? My wife sends me text messages, when I respond I have to "start all over" with getting back to what I was watching. :(

It's not capped, never was.

If its supported on all (current) iOS devices, it makes me wonder if a Netflix will be available... or restricted... on the (new) AppleTV OS.

can this response be.....for real?????

splash screen not optimized????? this kind of complaint leads me to believe this person would find fault in almost anything short of, and including (if she really existed) the virgin mary....reminds me of an ex gf who managed to kill almost anything/position we tried and gave me courage, at the sensitive age of 17,..to move on....8 years later i actually have to thank her...now how to benefit from this kind of feed back??? hmmm splash screen????? jeez...reallly????.

Really wish the license holders would remove their heads from their collective, well, you-know-whats, and begin allowing international streaming of movies, TV shows, etc. I am sure that, like me, there are millions of people around the world would gladly pay for such services.

This has less to do with the license holders and more to do with how movies are financed and distributed. The rights to distribute films to theaters, tv, and the internet are broken down and sold country-by-country or territory by territory (North America, South America, Asia, etc). Each film can have a completely different international distribution scheme outside the US.

So if you want to do streaming of a movie inside the US, you can cut deals with the distribution companies here. But if you want to do it internationally, then you have to start dealing with distributors in each territory or country. It becomes a lot more complicated.

For an app that is fairly new, I was hoping for RETINA DISPLAY GRAPHICS, and obviously fast app switching, I'm sure this application was in development before the iPhone 4 came out, and hopefully they will update soon. Other then that it's going to be pretty cool to watch Netflix. I just tried it with Edge, in the middle of a school, in the middle of nowhere with 2 bars, I was impressed with the video quality, but obviously, can't watch a full movie on it, as battery life would suffer.

I used to watch an entire episode of Scrubs on Megavideo with the old "mobilecinema" jailbreak add-on almost every single day exclusively on 3G, and never got past 3GB. I doubt you'll be on 3G enough to beat 5GB. The rumors I've heard is that there's a "soft cap" at 5GB, where your speed is throttled, rather than a hard cap, where you would have no connectivity at all. I don't even know if the former is true, but I've never heard of anyone getting service cut off, or any overage charges on the unlimited plan, no matter what their usage was.

Incidentally, how is the quality over 3G? Any hiccups at all? Any blockiness to the video, or noticeable resolution downgrade?

Pittsburgh Area-

Netflix app buffers so much it is unwatchable. I have full 3G service, but it's a no go. Same goes for XM and Pandora most of the day. I typically switch to Edge and my radio apps work fine, but then I end up not receiving phone calls. Seriously WTF. I know the 3G network is clogged, but when all the awesome features of a phone are crippled when I have full service, what is the point.

your complaint about their complaint, makes me wonder the exact same thing...

Retina graphics are a huge deal for an iPhone 4 user, it looks really horrible when the slightest detail isn't optimized for it. I mean how long would it actual take a developer to change the spash screen to a high-res graphic?

I only have 2 bars of 3G service at my place and haven't noticed a single bit of buffering...?

I have full service, always have in my area, and it buffers endlessly on all of my streaming apps. It is extremely frustrating and i've been tempted to return the phone, but always read that this is due to over congested network. It sucks I can't even listen to Pandora anymore. Maybe I'm crazy but I swear it worked a little better on the old 3G iphone...I may try a network reset AGAIN

Very upset this app doesn't let you manipulate the DVD or instant queue, it only lets you watch whatever is already on the instant queue. Can someone recommend a good 3rd party app to manage both queues?

Phoneflix. Works like a charm.

I'm glad they finally released it. And for some random reason, Family Guy is now on Netflix Streaming so I'm watching that now on my iPod. So awesome!

Anyone with 2 iPhones. Wondering if my wife watching something will screw up my stream.
