My problem is I'm paying for 4 streams when I only need and can use 1 at a time. My problem is that my kid who's away at college cannot use 1 of the 3 unused streams I'm paying for.

I suppose they could limit you to one stream, if that makes you happier, but that's the middle ground they've chosen to limit the widespread sharing of passwords while allowing people who cohabitate to share.

I may have to arrive with the guest(s). But I don't have to stay with them. I'm free to leave at any time (even after 5 minutes) and the guest(s) can stay as long as they want or until the museum closes for the day.

If I go visit my kid in college, I can enter my Netflix log-in to watch a movie with her. I'm free to leave at any time during the movie, but my kid technically, per Netflix's ToS, isn't allowed to keep watching the movie/using the service.

That's right.

When did so many people believe stealing something is acceptable?
Next time you use a bathroom in a place you aren't spending money at...guess what you're stealing their water and soap! ALSO yet again having Netflix since 1996 I will not keep up with every change they make...I never watch it except Stranger Things so I don't care, I just want my daughter to have access to my 4k HDR account.

Also as everyone is saying..Limit streaming to one... Problem solved....cause only one user at a time on account.

Down here it is a very common point to use like J-walking...rules that aren't needed. Such as passwords for minors should be allowed. If this was an adult or friend....let them buy their own. I have problems when people do things that hurt my daughter!
J-walking shouldn't be need you are right, but obviously enough people took advantage of just walking out on the street thinking cars can stop on a dime to where a law had to be created for no J-walking, but this again is a law. People here defending Netflix talking about sharing passwords like it is a crime and guess what IT IS NOT! why do you think instead of banning it they are trying to make money from it because it isn't a crime and it goes to show you that instead of banning it (which what most companies would do) if something is wrong like when you cheat in a game you get banned...why? because it is against the TOS. Why is it that in any other online thing that if you break the rules you get banned or some other sort of punishment, but why doesn't Netflix just ban those that password share after updating TOS? because Netflix knows it is where it is at because of password sharing and therefore cannot ban/block accounts that password share because that would truly hurt them.

Right!? These holier than thou folks are hilarious. They probably break 17 laws a day but heaven forbid you share your Netflix password (which isn't breaking the law). 🤣
I think it's more a reaction to the sense of entitlement. Sharing your password is breaking the (contractual) law but probably won't put you in jail-- it might get your service terminated though.

"Next time you use a bathroom in a place you aren't spending money at...guess what you're stealing their water and soap!"

If the management had a sign saying bathrooms were only for customers, which is often the case, then I wouldn't use that bathroom. Or, I would first ask for permission. Easy.

Then your daughter should get her own Netflix account. Also easy.

If your daughter is living with you in your home and watches Netflix in your home, then there's no problem. That is permitted in the terms of service that you agreed to.

What's the issue?

According to Netflix's terms of service (which you agreed to) she can watch Netflix at your home.

She can't "borrow" your password to watch Netflix somewhere else. She would then need to have her own Netflix account.

It is 100% stealing..if you go in a store take something and run out and not pay. That is stealing.
However, if the data is a copy and the original is still on their server. Hence it is a type of stealing, but not the full definition. Been that way since DOS in the early 80s. Honestly about every social media post is stealing with the pictures and videos they use. Data is diff ballgame.

It's called theft of service. Taking anything of value without paying, including a *service*, is stealing.

Read the terms of service to which you agreed.

My home is her home...She is basically to me in an extended stay hotel...her real furniture and stuff home, throw away stuff in dorms. Credit Card companies, the US Federal government, etc....recognize her address as mine. She will be moving back in a year back home anyway so just gotta figure out a year.

Again, as a business Netflix is entitled to dictate the terms of their service. Don't like them - simply choose another service that has terms acceptable for your needs. Easy.

For the year she's away she can have her own Netflix account.

Honestly, it's not money, it's principal..... and those I don't back down from, and yes I will continue to try to convince her online streaming in general is crap and go back to just buying movies and season passes.

Posts like this prove Netflix was offering services at too deep a discount. Eventually there will be a settling of churn and we’ll see where we are.

So what you're saying is that if Netflix were to cost more that I wouldn't be password sharing with other households? That doesn't make sense to me. In my mind, if a service is dirt cheap, why would you password share? On the other hand, if a service is more expensive, yeah, here's my password, venmo me $5 every few months.

Again, probably time to dump it, we only occasionally use it and those that have our password only occasionally use it. It's not getting much use overall.

Next time you drive into a shopping center and don’t buy anything you are causing wear and tear on their asphalt. This could go on to some ridiculous degrees.

If a service is dirt cheap it’s irrelevant if you keep it around. When it becomes more expensive and the value goes down you get rid of it. Before this bru-haha occurred cheap accounts combined with lots of password sharing was part the reason Netflix did what it did.

You are simply trying to justify your freeloading (stealing) because it didn't qualify as freeloading in the past. It does now. The TOS has changed. You can either agree with the new TOS and continue to subscribe under those new rules, or you can cancel. The plaintive wail of "I used to be able to..."is irrelevant. I used to pay a nickel for a coke (Yes, I'm that old...), but they changed the rules so a nickel won't do anymore. Same with Netflix.

Legally, yes.

Morally, no.

If you take a physical object from someone, they no longer have it and are worse off as a result. If you download something that you weren't going to pay for either way, nobody is actually worse off. Morally, I have no problem with that. Legally, I have a VPN and nothing is going to come of it.

Regardless of legality or morality, Netflix may be on the path to learning the same lesson the music industry did. Time will tell.

Look through the earlier pages of the thread, specifically the user highlighting the TOS.

I own Blu-Rays and DVDs. Plus, my library on iTunes is huge. Did I mention anything about stealing?
Oh, so a new movie comes out, you buy the 4K DVD and rip it to your Plex server? Let’s see, new 4K DVDs are over $20 a piece, and then there’s the hardware needed to rip a 4K DVD. Is there even software to do that? Yeah, I guess that is cheaper? than subscribing to a streaming service. Just so you can stick it to the streaming services? Yeah, right.

Well, if in fact, the TOS at the place with the bathroom says you have to be staying at the establishment, you are stealing their water and soap. It is staggering how entitled some people feel to other people's stuff.
